Jewels of the Teralin Coast
Welcome to Stirrings of Sedition, the first chapter in the Jewels of the Teralin Coast, a storytelling campaign for the World of Twilight miniatures game!
This storytelling campaign will allow you to join me in exploring the fair city of Teral, on the Western coast of the continent of Anyaral. Over a series of games your small band of characters will develop and evolve, following the story as the events in Teral start to unfold. This is designed for two players over 4 to 7 games (or more), but can easily stretch to more players.
The grand plan is that this will be the first of three chapters, with each campaign telling its own story, but directly influencing the following chapter and the broader world of Anyaral. All going well it will culminate in something suitably dramatic (but I’ll keep quiet about that for the moment).
An Introduction
I’ve been exploring the world of Anyaral for over a quarter of a century now, from very humble beginnings sketching out the strange little fubarnii and devanu in my bedroom and casting my early sculpts on my parents' hob to the current range with hundreds of models and a daunting wealth of background (wonderfully curated by Fred on the Anyaral Toolbox).
This campaign is designed to be open to both new and experienced players – previous campaigns have often focused on the wilder parts of the world or the depths of the Delgon invasion, but this time we’ve gone somewhere that the locals would certainly consider to be much more civilised!
Teral is a growing city, far from the centre of the Dolshian (Fubarnii) Empire and far from the war with the Delgon in the North. The fubarnii who live there lead a comfortable life, well defended from the predatory devanu and enjoying the bounties of the sea to their west. Several years ago they welcomed a Delgon delegation as guests who have brought wealth and expansion to the city. While this has made things very comfortable for the wealthier members of the city, there are those who question the motives of their guests and it has also drawn the ire of the distant Emperor.
It is on these fair streets that the stories will be told, for there is growing discontent and they may not be able to ignore the distant war for much longer.
The Campaign
One (or more) of the players will take command of the Loyalists, representing the rulers of the city and their Delgon allies, while their opponent will serve the Dissidents, those who are growing discontent with the development of the city. Each player will need a small force to play with; the Loyalists can build a force primarily from Empire (with room for Delgon or Dhogu as well), while the Dissidents will need some Empire or Riverfolk. The campaign includes a new character for each side as well as a small selection of models, some of which I’m keeping secret for now*. I will share images of the new models in case you prefer to know exactly what you are getting, but that will be hidden away so as not to spoil things for those who like surprises.
The campaign is designed so you can use your own collection with a handful of extras, but I couldn’t resist expanding the range and exploring the streets. I’m also releasing a couple of slightly larger forces to accompany the characters in the campaign in case you want to dive in fully.
When writing the campaign I wanted to present it with lots of lovely extras, fancy scrolls and special seals to be torn open. I know that some of you will love that full immersion, but for others that may be an added expense and you would rather just have the core elements. While a simpler option would be more sensible, I've added a deluxe pledge, in case any of you want to let me have a proper play! While the core of the rules will be the same, the deluxe set will come with nice boxes to hold components, additional cards, nicer paper and lots of wax seals.
* this sort of campaign needs at least a couple of surprises!
Where To Start
Experienced Players
If you’ve played before and have a few models already then you just need the campaign (either the basic or deluxe version) and you are good to go! I’d recommend getting the Characters of Teral if you haven’t got them (although you could easily proxy with the original Danakan, Muri, Obal and a couple of Casanii or other suitable models) and maybe the Civilian Lucky dip if you haven't got many civilians in your collection. It's always nice to have an excuse to get some new figures so you could consider one (or more) of the starter force sets so you can fully embrace the theme!
If a larger group of you want to explore the campaign, then you could go for the four player version, which is a deluxe set containing everything you need for four players. As with the two player sets, you may also like to get a few of the Teral models or forces to fully embrace the theme.
New Players
If you haven’t played before then you can find all the rules online at the Anyaral Toolbox, but I’d thoroughly recommend either buying the full game from our Store, or adding the Welcome to Anyaral Add-on to your pledge, which includes the full Twilight Rulebook, all the counters you need to play, and a force for the Loyalists and the Dissidents. If your budget can stretch then I would also recommend adding on the Characters of Teral, the big civilians lucky-dip pack and maybe Muri with her bodyguards. However, I’m all in favour of making do with what you have, and you can always proxy models.
Note that all models are provided unpainted and will require assembly.
Why??
This is a project I’ve wanted to do for a long time – exploring a part of the world and building a campaign that players can immerse themselves in for a short while, influencing where the world goes. Over the years I’ve loved running and playing roleplaying games, playing campaigns of Necromunda and Blood Bowl and in recent years I’ve loved to see how ‘legacy’ boardgames have developed. A common theme with all these is seeing how things develop over a series of games, often with surprises and ideally with a strong sense of storytelling. My favourite Twilight Day events have been those where I’ve been able to weave in storytelling and I wanted to find a way to open that up to a much broader group of players.
So last year I spent a few months writing, developing and playtesting this campaign, sculpting new characters and exploring ways to present things to immerse players in the world. It quickly became apparent that this was a particularly foolish plan, even by my normal standards – it would be fiddly and impractical to produce and rely on players being willing to take a chance on something very different to the usual proven approach taken by small game manufacturers. I couldn’t resist though and we had great fun playing through the campaign with my wife and daughters, breaking seals, reading notes and watching the characters develop as the story unfolded.
I still don’t think this is the most sensible of ideas, but when has that ever got in the way of a passion project? I’m planning to deliver something really unique and memorable that will spark your imaginations and give you your own stories to tell in this quirky little (but constantly growing) world I created. Each campaign pack will contain a wealth of hand assembled sealed notes and packages along with a few surprises. Each game pack then instructs players what to open and when, and the results of the games will help to determine how things play out for the fair city of Teral.
I've spent a lot of time looking at components - what will be practical and affordable to include. This has resulted in two different options - the basic campaign pack (which is far from basic!) and a second version with a few nifty upgrades. There is no change to the gameplay, but this is for the collectors and gives me a lot more freedom to make it look prettier!
I really can't wait to see how this plays out and hear your stories! The fate of Teral rests in your hands...
Campaign Bonuses!
During the campaign we've added a few little bonuses as a thank you:
Bonus Boliga!
Every campaign pack will include a bonus boliga.
Fruit Flingers!
Every backer who has pledged £150 or more during the campaign will receive a free random fruit flinging urchin as a thank you. Anybody who has pledged £300 or more will get a full set of three fruit flingers.
Bonus Civilian!
Anybody who adds the "Welcome to Anyaral" pack will receive a bonus random civilian from the range.
Pledge Levels
Basic Pledge
The basic campaign will come in a large envelope containing everything you need for the campaign, including plenty of envelopes, a few little matchboxes (containing secret goodies), various tokens and a small selection of miniatures. It'll also contain lots and lots of envelopes and printed notes (60 separate notes and counting) and character cards etc. Plus one or two other little treats. There will also be a "Trader's Guide to Teral" booklet, just so you can find your way around the city.
- Rules and Components for 8 Scenarios (4 main Core Scenarios and 4 smaller Interim Scenarios) including over 175 components, including notes, envelopes, reference cards, tokens etc.
- 2 main character models (Alondiah and Jahno) plus (at least) 5 secret models
- Illustrated guide to Teral booklet
Deluxe Pledge
The deluxe campaign pack will be upgraded and packaged in a nice box to hold everything together - probably sealed with a ribbon. The box will contain two smaller boxes (one for each player). The deluxe version will also give me the excuse to spend more time and money on the finish, including more pretty wax seals and envelopes as well as a few more individual hand finished bits - more on that as the campaign progresses!
Everything in the basic pledge plus:
- Upgraded components – this will give me an excuse to add more wax seals, nicer paper, etc.
- A box for each player to store their cards and components in and a nice big box to hold everything together
- New deck of about 25 reference cards (incorporated into the campaign pack)
Four Player Pledge
If there are more of you wanting to play a campaign then this is the deluxe option for you! This version adds two more characters to the deluxe set so you can join with the Loyalists as the insidious Delgon or support the Dissident cause with members from one of the more successful criminal gangs that run the Old Docks.
Everything in the deluxe pledge plus:
- Two new character models (NuraKira Gobahn, Delgon priest, with two Terali Guards and Karon Berak, Engu Enforcer)
- Additional player boxes and components
- Updated campaign to allow four (or more) players to join in, with all the necessary components
Note: the campaign has been reworked so you ideally need four committed players to play it through. However, you can easily have one player looking after two of the forces on one side (keeping components and characters separate in the little boxes), so this will comfortably play with two, three or four players (or more, if you are feeling creative!).
Add-Ons!
The campaign has been designed so you can use your own forces to play, but it's always nice to have an excuse to add a few more models to your collection. These models have been released previously, so are also available on the webstore.
I've packaged a couple of starter forces that are an ideal way to start if you don't have existing forces, or want to make something a bit more tailored to the streets of Teral. These forces are entirely playable in normal games, they are just particularly well suited to the streets of Teral!
There are of course a few extra characters who will turn up during the campaign, including Chancellor Danakan, his Delgon advisor NuraTia Obal and his erstwhile friend and traveling companion, Muri. You can easily proxy the models for your campaign, but I've created a small add-on collection that includes these core characters and few additional useful figures for your campaign.
As this campaign is set in the city there will of course be civilians around. Again, you can easily proxy models if you haven't built up a collection of the quirky civilians that I love to sculpt, but I have added a options if you want to expand your collection. These include a set of themed Terali civilians and a larger 'lucky dip' that will include a variety of different civilians and small beasts at a bargain price. I can't promise what exactly will be in the pack, but they will all be different.
Shipping and Taxes
I always do my best to keep shipping down, but sadly it does keep increasing. Shipping and taxes will be charged after the campaign, but should be in the following ranges:
- UK: £7 to £10
- EEA and USA: £20 to £25 plus taxes
- Rest of World: £20 to £25 (backers are responsible for any duties)
Hand Made!
I am a strong believer in creating art for the sake of creating art, and I am lucky to be able to share my creations with people around the world. This whole campaign is very much a hand-made passion project, with all the quirks and imperfections that that inevitably entails - the models have all been hand sculpted by me, using a mix of green stuff and beesputty and then cast by talented casters. All the campaign notes and the likes will be printed and then cut/torn, folded and then sealed by members of the Twilight family. My daughters are currently enthusiastic at that prospect, but that enthusiasm may rapidly run out if too many of you go for the deluxe option!
This does mean that everything will be unique and perhaps a little wonky, but I'm hoping that will be part of the charm.
I would like to think it doesn't need saying (although sadly at the moment I think it does), but there is certainly no Generative AI involved at any stage in this project!
