I've started work on Armies & Legions & Hordes: Volume Two – Themes & Schemes!
This book is a great sequel to Volume One and it dives deep into the two primary things people notice when looking at an army on the tabletop - visual themes & color schemes.
This book will feature 15+ wargaming projects to illustrate the concepts I present within. From Warhammer 40,000 and The Horus Heresy to Gaslands and Trench Crusade, you'll learn methods that have successfully worked for me for over 35 years.
While I haven't finalized ALL of the projects that will be going into ALH2, I do know quite a few of them. Here are a dozen, split evenly between their main focus on either Theme or Scheme.
THEMES
When talking about Themes we'll cover:
• Where you can regularly find inspiring Theme ideas • How to decide on the important visual elements of a Theme • How your Theme choices can impact the Build • Using Design Language and additional elements to carry your Theme visually
and SCHEMES
When talking about Schemes, we'll cover: • Researching your Scheme options and making strong choices • Comparing our options to existing examples • Contrast – What that means and how you can achieve it • AND we'll talk about things you can do to boost your confidence if you happen to be colorblind
ALL THE INFO!
In this book you'll find hundreds of photos, all great examples of the points I'm making and the methods, tips, and tricks that I use all the time to create my personal (and professional) army paintjobs.
But don't just take my word for it!
Even though I'm 100% confident in all of my Theme and Scheme choices (hey, I'm writing a book about them!) I know that it is valuable to listen to other successful hobbyists as well. That's why this book will contain thoughts and suggestions on these topics from accomplished hobbyists such as Adam Abramowicz of The Army Painter, Fletcher Giles of Tabletop Tactics, and a couple of others. I'll also working with miniature painting friends who are colorblind to explore the options and tools available to help build you confidence in your choices.
This volume, like the first, will be a 176-page, hardback book printed by my trusted printing partners in Lithuania, Standard Impressa, who have printed over 85,000 books for my little enterprise alone!
The writing and photography are already underway, so I'm planning to fulfill this campaign in August, 2027.
BONUS REPRINT OF VOLUME ONE!
This project also gives me the opportunity to reprint Armies & Legions & Hordes: Volume One, which I'm really excited to do.
BUT this isn't a simple reprint, this is an opportunity to thank everyone who has supported my work over the years, even as I was still learning my craft. That original project contained about eight or nine photos that were annoyingly, slightly out of focus. Not enough that you couldn't tell what was going on, but enough to go "huh?". This wasn't caught until 3,000 copies had been printed and I was in no financial position to eat the cost of reprinting. I did reshoot the photos, and sent a PDF of the reshoots out to all of my backers, but it has lingered with me as a mistake not fully corrected.
So, with eight years of experience publishing books and distributing them to thousands around the world, this is the time to make it right.
Everyone who backs this project for Armies & Legions & Hordes: Volume Two here on BackerKit will also receive a reprinted copy of Armies & Legions & Hordes: Volume One for FREE!
That's right, no need to buy another copy of the first book, no need to even add it as an add-on or similar. Everyone who pledges for the physical ALH2 will receive the physical ALH1 automatically. If you pledge for the digital ALH2, you'll receive the digital ALH1 automatically.
Thank you for all of your support over the years, and thank you for your patience with me as I continue to build something exciting, educational, and inspiring.
Cheers Dave Taylor
DAVE TAYLOR MINIATURES
Dave Taylor Miniatures was founded in 2013, after 14 years with Games Workshop and 5 years with Wargames Illustrated magazine. Since then, I've published another 18 books, with three more at the printers as we speak*. I've learned a great deal in those intervening years: actual print times and costs, shipping times and costs, working with many authors across continents and language barriers, and delivering real printed books to almost 11,000 supporters around the globe.
These books include the successful series of books (15 available right now!) about wonderful miniatures artists called THE ART OF... as well as three other books – Terrain Essentials with The Terrain Tutor Mel Bose, The Tremendous Tome of Epic Dungeons with Jeff Hall, and 28COLLECTED with TEAM28!
Armies & Legions & Hordes was my first publication, written, photographed, and designed by me. It's a real treat to be coming back to this idea, and expanding on such an important part of the process.
