In Beasts you play a group of teenage child soldiers fighting an insidious Enemy hellbent on the silent conquest of humanity. The Enemy is a secretive organization, covertly taking control of people’s minds, bodies, and will. Should the Enemy’s invasion ever become known to society at large, they would shift their strategy to full-out war against humanity, something you know that would result in the loss of a staggering amount of lives. You and your friends have the power to transform into animals. Will this power be enough to turn the tides of the invasion? Probably not, but you are our only hope.
How far will you go to win this war? And what will be left of you when it is over?
The Game
Beasts is a Powered by the Apocalypse Zine inspired by the Animorphs book series. Characters use their ability to transform into animals to sneak around, fight, and fly. The zine contains everything you need to get straight to playing the game, beautifully laid out by Francita Soto and with artwork by comics illustrator Fernando Heinz.
These powers will be fully tested as characters fight the Enemy, a nefarious secret army you and players around the table will design. The Enemy is secretly overtaking the Earth, taking over the minds, bodies, and hearts of its victims.
Convictions
Characters in Beasts are torn between their convictions, what they know is good and true and moral; and their urgent need to win the war. This inner struggle can be felt in the game by physically ripping up your character sheet.
As your character breaks their convictions in the interest of winning the war, you'll rip out pieces of your character sheet that represent your character's loss of pieces of themselves. Sections of your character sheet have dotted lines to show where to rip them, these rips change the way your character's in game Moves work, particularly those that have to do with relating to others and being kids. As the campaign goes on, you'll feel your character changed, reflected in the tattered character sheet in front of you.
Assets
As you win victories against the enemy, your team gains access to assets - objects or people that help increase their power. They could be alien allies with mystical powers, other teens willing to help your team out, or the ability to transform into new alien creatures or anthropomorphic versions of animals.
Worldbuilding
The Zine will include a set of questions to facilitate worldbuilding a scenario for you and your friends to play through. What sort of creature or empire is the Enemy? Does their power originate from weird science, horrible powers, or fantastic magic? The zine will also include two sample scenarios to jump right into the action. Perhaps the Enemy is 10-dimensional ethereal invaders that program human brains like computers, or perhaps they are sea creatures that have used their magical song to manipulate human emotions for all of humankind's history.
