When humans can express their body free from the limits of the physical world, they get creative with it.
In a century's time, the widespread adoption of advanced implants that render virtual reality via realistic holograms in the internal non-space of the mind has drastically altered the way that humans are capable of representing themselves. What hasn't changed a bit is the desire to showcase their individualism in new and creative ways.
Each runner can appear on the VR network however they wish. Some runners choose human avatars which may or may not be similar to their real life appearance. Other runners enjoy the trans-human freedom of cyberspace and express themselves in other ways such as vehicles, fire, or anthropomorphic viruses. If you can conceive of a form for your consciousness to inhabit, it is possible in cyberspace!
Runners are known for their hacking skills, not their cyber modeling and animation skills. For that reason, runners often employ an underground virtual artist to design a custom avatar to their own specifications. The visual style of our runners vary greatly from anime, to cartoonish, to more realistic. We intentionally wanted to showcase the wide varieties of ways that humans express themselves in a virtual context, which shares no one art style or personality.
We took direct inspiration from the real life virtual reality subculture of VR Chat when designing the look and feel of our Black Hat runners. A search of “VR chat group selfies” on google will yield a bewildering array of avatars that humans choose to portray themselves as, even with the limited technology of our own time.

👩💻 Build Your Cyber Deck
Black Hats has a Unity-based online deck builder hosted on our website. There you can explore all of the different runners and hacking rigs, along with every executable card in the game. Once you have hired your team and built your cyber deck, you can export them for quick play in our Tabletop Simulator mod!
