Capitalize: The Millionaire-Maker Board Game
Heyo! We're Shawn and Jess and we created Capitalize (well Shawn created it and forced Jess to play it 1000 times 😋).
Capitalize is a geometrical, learn-in-minutes wealth building game where you rely on your in-game strengths to outwit your opponents.
Wealth is built over time, but could be lost on a single roll of the dice! In this fast-paced showdown, you aren't just a player—you're a baller in the making. You'll choose an industry and take any path deemed necessary to amass a fortune.
Will you be a Real Estate tycoon, buying up land at a massive discount? A Building magnate, racing to construct game-winning cities? A Banking boss, earning income from every player's cash flow? Or a Finance guru, mastering the market?
Your goal is simple: Be the first to become a millionaire. But be careful—a bad roll can trigger Uncle Sam and force a "fire sale" of your hard-earned assets.
Capitalize Basics
Capitalize was designed to be an electric, high-stakes strategy race to $1,000,000. It's a game of making not only tactile investments, but also calculated risks since every roll counts. Plus, it has just the right amount of competitive mischief.
Here's what we like about it:
- A Unique City-Scape Every Game: Choose the standard map setup or build the board piece-by-piece with your opponents for a totally unique layout every time you play. The map is made to be modular as the landscape constantly evolves when players buy land and develop it, ensuring no two games ever look the same.
- Endless Replayability: With four unique industries and perks, you'll never play the same game twice. Your strategy is defined by your role: will you exploit your Real Estate discount to rapidly expand, or use your Building advantage to race toward a game-winning City? Every game demands a new plan.
- A Multi-Layered Empire: Your empire grows up, not just out. You'll strategically layer valuable Urban pieces on top of your Suburban developments, eventually replacing them entirely to build your game-winning Cities. Planning your vertical growth is just as critical as your horizontal expansion.
- A Game of "Boom-and-Bust": The game is balanced by thrilling, high-stakes moments. Just when one player seems unstoppable with a massive income, a TAX roll can easily equalize the game, forcing all players to pay their salary and recurring investment income back to the market. This powerful mechanic (along with others) prevents runaway leaders and keeps fighting for the W.
- Teach in 5 Minutes, Play in an Hour: The core gameplay is incredibly simple. It’s easy to teach but packed with deep strategic decisions. There's so many ways to win, making it the perfect centerpiece for any game night.
How to Play
You can learn to play in less than 5 minutes. On your turn, you take 3 simple actions:
1. COLLECT YOUR INCOME
At the start of your turn, you get paid. Collect investment income from your Stocks (if you have any) and then cashflow from your Real Estate. The more you have, the richer you get.
2. BUY OR SELL ASSETS
This is your "power" phase. You can buy AND/OR sell up to two items:
- Expand your empire by buying Land.
- Upgrade Land into a Suburban piece.
- Develop Suburban pieces into Urban pieces.
- Build a massive City over your smaller Urban pieces.
- Invest by buying Real Estate, Banking, or Construction Stocks.
3. ROLL & GET PAID (OR TAXED!)
Roll the two dice. All players in the industries rolled get their salary! Roll doubles? Get paid double! But watch out...
- If you roll TAX: Everyone pays their salary AND all their investment income back to the market. This is the great equalizer—and a brutal way to go bankrupt!
- If you roll Court of Justice: You have the option to sue and collect on damages by taking any single player to court. The alleged defendant must pay the player $20,000 big boys.
Each asset is worth a different amount and earns income at a different rate. Just like in real life, there's a million ways to make a million bucks💰
The first player to start their turn with a $1,000,000 net worth (cash + what your assets are worth) wins the game!

Capitalize Game Theory
While Capitalize is easy to learn and appears to be simply based on luck... it's far from it. Not only have countless rounds been played in real life (mainly because Shawn forced Jess to play every night after dinner), but also over 1,000+ people have already play tested it.
Funny enough, every single person you introduce the game to... Take their own spin on it! Everyone has a different opinion on which industry is best and which strategy will yield the best results. It's never the same. Yet in reality, winning Capitalize ultimately comes down to your risk tolerance and playstyle. Each move you make will either set you up for success later in the game, or have you watching your opponents get rich instead!
Capitalize was designed to prove to everyone that whether it's in the game of Capitalize or in real life... playing to your strengths is ultimately how to come out ahead. It's all about how well you take advantage of what makes you... YOU.
Shawn's Favorite Game Mechanic:
Honestly, I can play to the strengths of each industry, but I personally love Building. While it seems to hurt more when a TAX is rolled... you can build net worth so much quicker in the early and mid game. Stack that with a Construction Stock or two, and you'll really be cooking! I've learned to be careful when playing Capitalize though since you also have to keep an eye on what your opponents are doing. I've had to play more defense than offense at times just to stay in the running.
Bottom Line: Keep an eye on your opponents but just because they are doing something that is working... doesn't mean you need to as well. Find that balance between actively growing your net worth worth while also capitalizing on what the rest of the players are doing.
Jess' Favorite Game Mechanic:
After losing to Shawn 90% of the time (don't even get me started on how he would just change the rules mid game as we were creating this game), I tried a super unique strategy that actually worked. I chose Real Estate and went all in on it. I bought all the stocks for it and just stacked my cash by buying and selling land on every turn I had. It worked! Massive amount of cash... without much burden from taxable income! Well I was victorious one game with it, until my opponent (Shawn of course) realized that he'd never let me own all of those stocks again.
Bottom Line: There's so many ways to win this game, but I've learned that going all in on your specific strengths is really the only chance you have at defeating your opponents. Set your moves up early for it pay off in the late game when things move quick!
We love it, but we're (obviously) biased. Here's what other players think:
Player Reviews 💰
"Feels like Catan and Monopoly made a baby. It's a fun economic race and the industries are a brilliant touch. My 50% discount on Land as the Real Estate player felt totally different from my friend's Building strategy. It's sharp, fast, and I can't wait to play it again." —Brenden, Strategy Playtester
"This is our new game night obsession. It's incredibly easy to learn, but the strategies are deep. One game, I'll go all-in on stocks; the next, I'm a real estate mogul. It's all the fun of a 3-hour tycoon game packed into 60 minutes." —Emily, Game Night Connoisseur
"Talk about strategy. It's like Monopoly, but kind of mixed with Settlers of Catan. It reminds me a lot of Chinatown as well... it seems like a very cutthroat sort of game, and we can sue other people which is pretty fun." —Justin, Playing Board Games
"Capitalize creates the most memorable moments. I was one turn away from winning when another player rolled 'TAX,' forcing me to fire-sale my prized City! It's a brilliant, high-stakes loop that keeps everyone at the table engaged until the very end." —Mark, Board Game Reviewer
"This game is just fun. I loved suing my opponent with the 'Court of Justice' dice and then watching them squirm as I built my empire. The table talk that occurs due to that dice roll is always different. It's fast, interactive, and has just the right amount of 'take-that' chaos." —Chloe, Casual Board Gamer
"Overall, we had a ton of fun playing Capitalize and I highly recommend checking it out. When we first opened the box, the game looked a little intimidating... I'm not a finance guy so some things tend to go over my head... but honestly the game was extremely easy to learn and play." —Kaleb, Geeks+
"Absolutey amazing game idea for parents to buy for their children. Not only do we have fun spending time together as a family, but this taught my kids more about money than school did." —Jesse, Mother of 3
Meet the Team
Why Kickstarter?
Simply Put: We love board games.... but needed a new game night obsession. We wanted a game that felt like a high-stakes strategy simulation, but played in about an hour. Where you could build a massive engine, but... a single dice roll or decision could change everything, keeping everyone on the edge of their seat until the very end.
That's when "Capitalize" was born! A game of "boom-and-bust" that's different every time you play.
We're coming to Kickstarter to fund our first major production run. Your pledge will go directly into manufacturing these custom components at scale to help us turn this hobby into an actual business. We have so many ideas for expansion packs and new spinoffs... but we can't afford to get it there by ourselves.
By backing today, you're not just pre-ordering a game: you're helping to build a new community focused on bringing board game strategies to being used in every day life.
