Return to Coyote & Crow
Hundreds of Coyote & Crow fans asked for it, and we're delivering! Legends & Icons is a brand new sourcebook for the Coyote & Crow™ roleplaying game, chock full of dangerous creatures, mysterious spirits, intriguing Fifth Worlders (humans), and more. Brought to you by Kenna Alexander (Cherokee Nation) and the Native writers of Coyote & Crow™, these fully illustrated entries will detail game statistics and lore for beings you can use in any of your Coyote & Crow™ adventures or as inspirations for other games.
In these pages, you'll find high-tech assassins, militant political organizations, infamous Indigenous creatures, deadly spirits, living curses, sentient machines, and so much more - 100 entries in total!
What Are Legends & Icons
The Coyote & Crow™ Roleplaying Game categorizes individual beings, or groups of beings, that players might come across in two different ways. First, we separate them between Fifth Worlder, Creature, or Spirit. Second, we use the terms Legend or Icon. Here's how we define those:
- Fifth Worlder: A being that is part of our natural world and that obeys the natural laws as we understand them. Humans and the animals and plants we all know - bears, fish, trees, wolves, eagles, plants, trees, etc., are all part of the Fifth World.
- Creatures: These are material beings that sometimes follow natural laws and can be born and die in ways similar to Fifth Worlders, but are not part of our real world biome. Beings like Lokotomig, Malo, and Moobi Motsii are examples of Creatures from our core rulebook.
- Spirits: These are beings that may or may not be corporeal Regardless, they do not live or die in ways that obey natural laws and they often have physics defying abilities. They do not originate from our world but often visit or stay in our world.
- Legends: These are groups, collections, or organizations of Fifth Worlders, Creatures, or Spirits. They might have a set of stats that exemplify a typical member but no one individual is necessarily the same as the next. They might be a secretive human cult, a group of spirits like the Doosadaag, or insects like the Okosooma as described in our core rulebook.
- Icons: These are specific individuals, with proper names and a specified list of stats. Mercenaries like Goliga or a spirit like Kinsataan from our core rulebook are good examples.
What You'll Find Inside
Legends & Icons will be a full-sized, full color, hardbacked book with 100 entries. Each entry will be a two page spread, with color art work, lore, story prompts, and game stats compatible with the Coyote & Crow™ Roleplaying Game.
A cultural note. Some of these entries are extrapolations of real world Indigenous myths. We have taken care to adapt these for the game setting in a way we believe honors the original stories and the people who told them, and still tell them today. This allows players of all backgrounds to comfortably incorporate them into their games. Conversely, many of these are created whole-cloth by our writers, diving deep into our team's collective imaginations and giving players intriguing challenges based on the alternate world of Coyote & Crow.

About Coyote & Crow
If you weren’t familiar with Coyote & Crow™ the roleplaying game before coming here, let us catch you up on things. Coyote & Crow™ is a science-fantasy tabletop roleplaying game created by Kenna Alexander (Cherokee Nation) and a team of Native writers and artists. The game is set in an alternate timeline, one where colonization of the Americas never happened due to a climate event centuries ago that altered the future of everyone on Earth.
The game uses a d12 dice pool mechanic and a unique system of character advancement called the Legendary System that emphasizes character growth and larger-than-life storytelling. Players create epic heroes who will eventually be the subject of stories told around campfires for generations. The game embraces numerous genres and styles of play - adventure, noir, sci-fi, magical, cyberpunk, horror and more.
Praise for Coyote & Crow
“Coyote & Crow is a thrilling alternate history, with fascinating characters and ridiculously cool techno-magic. Best of all, it has made me imagine new kinds of futures, full of thriving Indigenous cities that are mythic but also delightfully mundane, full of comedy clubs and sleazy tricksters. Come for the adventure, but stay to experience a world that’s so immersive it feels like a brilliant epic novel.”
Annalee Newitz, author of Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age and The Future of Another Timeline
“Joyous, robust, and clearly a labor of both love and skill, Coyote & Crow is a game that asks you not to just imagine a better world, but to become its champion. Say yes. You’ll be so glad you did.
Shanna Germain, Monte Cook Games
“[Coyote & Crow] is polished, sensitive, well thought out, and ready to play. There’s so much room in this for Natives to make their own stories, yet enough guidance so that non-Natives will not blunder into stereotypes and racism. To me, that’s the key: Direction for what’s going to be fun versus what’s going to be offensive.”
Egg Embry, EN World
“Coyote and Crow brings together respectful, hopeful representation and a smartly designed set of systems built on equal parts mechanical heft and narrative freedom. It’s been a breeze running the game out of an accessible core rulebook designed to be friendly from the font up. It’s a breath of fresh air to see Native representation in the TTRPG space – but more than that, it’s nice to see optimism and accessibility front and center in a medium that too often leans on exploring our tragedy.”
Chez Oxendine, Tribal Business News
Coyote & Crow Games, the publisher behind the Coyote & Crow The Roleplaying Game has been nominated for and won numerous awards, including a Nebula award nomination for Game Writing, winning the Diana Jones Award for Gaming Excellence, an Origins Award for best core RPG, two Tabletop Awards, one for Rising Star Publisher, and one for best RPG, a CRIT Award for best RPG, and an Origins Award nomination for best cooperative game for Wolves.
Since 2021, we've produced our core RPG, our Ahu Tiiko setting expansion, twelve playable stories, custom dice, a Story Guide screen, a novel set in Coyote & Crow, Hemlock & Sage, two standalone games - Naasii and Wolves - along with tons of merchandise.
Our core values are to present Indigenous Americans in an accurate and positive light in tabletop games, to work with Natives whenever we can, and to produce fun, engaging games with modern game mechanics and components in an ecofriendly way for worldwide audiences.
Kenna's (& Coyote & Crow Games') politics: Games are inheritly political, one way or another and I unapologectially inject my games with my politics. I embrace and celebrate diversity. I support Land Back, trans rights, LGBTQIA+ causes and people, immigration as not just beneficial, but a necessary good. I think everyone deserves housing, education, healthcare, UBI, and clean food and water. I believe Black lives matter. I believe no one is illegal on stolen land. And I champion the phrase, "Nothing About Us, Without Us."
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness..." Mark Twain

Native Excellence
Coyote & Crow Games prides itself on not only being a Native-owned company, but that we work with Natives whenever possible for art, and exclusively for our writing. It's important that all of our players - Native and non-Native - know that we respect the material we're working with. We do our best to check each other, stay in our cultural lanes, lift each other up, and hopefully make our ancestors proud.
We're not perfect here. But I firmly believe that we've truly raised the bar for Indigenous representation in board games over the last five years. I hope you'll help us continue that mission.
And we're not the only ones doing great work! These are Native-owned companies that we've worked directly with and are putting out fantastic games, art, and more and we fully endorse them. Check them out!

Our Stance on AI
New To Kickstarter?
Is this your first Kickstarter? Has it been a while? Or maybe you've only done a couple of them and don't remember the details. Here's a quick bullet point primer on how Kickstarters work:
- Kickstarters are attempts by creators to raise money to help create new things! In our case, we're raising money for our book described here, Legends & Icons.
- When you choose to support Coyote & Crow Games through Kickstarter you're investing in our future because you believe in us and our creative endeavors. Kickstarter is not a store, you are not "buying" something.
- If you want to support this Kickstarter, you'll choose a pledge level. You'll be asked to sign in to Kickstarter if you haven't, or to create a Kickstarter account. Either way, do not use AppleID for your email. (Using AppleID will prevent you from receiving important future emails from us and Kickstarter).
- Once you've signed in, you can choose a pledge level and any Add Ons you'd like.
- You can change or add on to your pledge while the Kickstarter is still running (ours is scheduled to run 4 weeks from the day it starts). Your card is not immediately charged.
- During and after the campaign, we'll be posting updates on the Kickstarter that will appear on this campaign page and go to the email address you provided. These updates will give you information on production schedules, delivery times and more.
- If we don't hit our funding goal in the alloted time, your card will not be charged.
- If we hit our funding goal at the end of the campaign, your card will be charged for the amount you pledged.
- If we surpass our goals by a certain amount, they will unlock "Stretch Goals" which are bonus rewards that backers will receive or get access to. (see Stretch Goals above)
- When we get closer to delivery of your rewards, we'll work with our partners, AllPlay.com. They handle the management and delivery of our Kickstarter rewards. They will send a "pledge survey" to your email which will confirm things like your pledge, add ons, any changes, and your delivery address, as well as collect shipping costs. From the time we send those out, you have six months to fill them out. If we haven't recieved them by then, we'll assume your pledge was a donation and your rewards will be considered abandoned.
- When the products are ready to ship to you, you'll have a final chance to make any changes to your delivery address.
- It's your responsibility to keep up with our Kickstarter updates, to manage your pledge survey, and to ensure we have proper shipping information, if you wish to receive your rewards.
Thank You/Wado
Once again, thank you for supporting Coyote & Crow Games and helping bring Indigenous storytelling to life. We live in uncertain and tumultuous times and it is my firmly held belief that art is one of the most important things to help us get through dark times, along with community.
For Coyote & Crow Games, the degree of success for each Kickstarter determines our future. So again, thank you.
