THE MONSTER TIER SYSTEM
Not every monster should be built the same way.
CRYPT OF CREATURES uses a six-tier Monster Tier System that organizes creatures according to their complexity, battlefield presence, and overall impact on an encounter.
STANDARD
Straightforward creatures designed to be easy to run while still having distinctive abilities and interesting tactical identities.
ELITE
More dangerous creatures with additional tactical options, stronger abilities, and greater battlefield presence.
LIVING BESTIARY
Creatures built to stand alone against a full party.
Living Bestiary monsters get their own turns between yours, resist being shut down by a single lucky save, and carry specific conditions for how they're truly defeated — not just a bigger health bar. Some go further still, evolving mid-encounter as the fight escalates, gaining new abilities or transforming outright as the battle unfolds. Every Living Bestiary creature is built to feel like a genuine threat on its own, not just a Standard monster with bigger numbers.
MYTHIC
Major threats with exceptional abilities and encounter-defining mechanics.
Mythic creatures are intended to feel like significant opponents rather than ordinary monsters.
EPIC
Extraordinary creatures designed for the most powerful adventurers and the most important encounters.
Epic monsters can serve as campaign-level threats, legendary adversaries, or the centerpiece of major adventures.
TITAN
The highest tier of the Monster Tier System.
Titans aren't simply creatures with enormous statistics. They are designed to feel like events.
Every Titan is a single, unique, individually named creature — never a species, never a variant, never one of several. There is only one.
A Titan should be something the players remember. These are the creatures that can become the centerpiece of an entire adventure, campaign arc, or legendary confrontation.
