What is Dark Kingdoms?

After the Roman withdrawal in the early 5th century, Britannia was plunged into chaos. Saxons, Angles, Jutes, and Britons fought over land, resources, and glory. In this relentless struggle, only one people would emerge victorious and raise their banner over the island of the Mighty.

Only one people shall prevail!

Dark Kingdoms is a strategy and conquest game for 2 to 4 players, set in 5th-century Britannia, at the height of the clash between the Celtic peoples and the Germanic invasions.

Each player leads a faction with its own king or leader:

  • The Saxons of Cerdic, in the south.
  • The Angles of Eomer, in the east.
  • Hengist's Jutes in the north.
  • Vortigern's Britons, the legitimate rulers in decline.

Build settlements, fortifications, and fleets. Recruit troops and expand your domain. Manage your resources-wood, iron, stone, wheat, and goldwisely, and face your rivals in battles, raids, and sieges.

In Dark Kingdoms, it's not enough to survive: you must prove your power by accumulating Victory Points through conquest, fame, and construction.

Game components

The game includes a plethora of components and stunning artwork by Marco Antonio del Campo. Together, they bring the dark and epic atmosphere of 5th-century Britannia to life - a world of clashing kingdoms and clans, conquest, steel, and glory.

  • 4 faction sheets.
  • 90 Resource cards (Stone, Wood, Iron, Wheat, and Gold).

(Final design may vary after the campaign)

Game mechanics

To achieve victory, you must prove your faction is the strongest. You may earn Victory Points in different ways and there are many game strategies for you to try. There is no single path to victory!

  • Resource management: yield, manage, and invest your resources to strengthen your faction.
  • Strategic construction: build fortresses, settlements, and fleets to ensure control of the map.
  • Epic combat: battles, sieges, and raids are resolved with dice and cards.
  • Fame cards: will reward feats and grant tactical advantages.
  • Competitive and team modes (2 vs. 2): alliances, betrayals, and all-out war.

How to play

The goal of the game is to earn the most victory points (VPs) by winning Battles and expanding your clan by building Settlements, Fortresses, and Fleets. Once you have earned between 13 and 15 VP, you only need one last epic victory to be declared the winner. However, you can also win if you have the most VPs when the Britannia card deck runs out.

In this game, every decision counts: will you try to make your clan the most powerful at the end of the game, or will you risk everything in one last epic battle?

1. Initial setup

Dark Kingdoms is easy to learn.
Each faction starts with a Fortress, three Settlements, and an Army in their home lands. From there, they must expand to take control of new regions and gain access to more resources.

3-Player setup example: The Briton player (red) places their pieces in Powys. Next, the Saxon player (yellow) places theirs in South Wessex, and finally the Anglo-Saxon player (blue) places theirs in Anglia.

2. Production and resources

At the beginning of each round, dice are rolled to determine which regions produce.
  • If you have Settlements in those territories, you will obtain Wood, Stone, Iron, or Wheat cards, depending on the territory.
  • In addition, conquering territories generates Gold, which helps you recruit Troops or collect Resources you need.

Resources are the driving force of the game: Build Settlements to increase your production, establish Fortresses to secure your domains and earn more VP, create Fleets to wage war across the sea, and recruit Troops to expand your Armies.

Resource yield example: The highest scoring die is red, so the territories named in red are the ones that yield resources. The Briton takes 2 Stone and 1 Gold. The Saxon takes 1 Wood. The Anglo takes 1 Wheat, and the Jute takes 1 Iron and 1 Wood.

3. Player turn

On their turn, each player can spend their resources and decide on their strategy:
  • Build: populate new lands, reinforce your defenses with Fortresses, or create Fleets to dominate the sea routes.
  • Recruit: train Troops to form more powerful Armies or reinforce existing ones.
  • Move: advance by land or sail with your Fleets to surprise the enemy.
  • Fight: wage decisive Battles, besiege Fortresses, or raid Settlements to steal resources from the enemy.
  • Play Fame cards: your feats in combat will grant you special advantages.

4. Combat and Fame

When Armies clash on the battlefield, everything is decided by a combination of strategy and the roll of the dice
  • Each Troop in an Army grants one die in combat: the larger your Army, the more chances you have to win.
  • The attacker and defender roll their dice and compare the highest result. Whoever has the highest value wins.
  • Players can play Resource and Fame cards to add +1 to the die. In case of a tie, the defender wins.
  • After each round, the loser loses one Troop. Combat continues until one side is destroyed or retreats.

🏆 Combat Rewards
  • Winning a Battle earns you Victory Points and Fame cards.
  • Laying Sieges on Fortresses and Attaacking Settlements are even more decisive: conquering them grants additional VPs and control over new lands.
  • Even retreat can be honorable: sometimes surviving and regrouping is better than falling.

Retreat example: The Angle has only 2 possibilities for retreat (2 adjacent territories under theri control). After retreating, he loses control of South Mercia, as they only had one Marker there. The Briton will steal a random Resource card from them and draw 1 Fame card.

5. End of the game

The game can end in two ways:

  1. Victory by conquest: if a player reaches the required number of VP and wins a decisive victory in a final battle.
  2. Victory by domination: if the Britannia cards run out, the player with the most VP wins.

Reconquista - A strategy, conquest and battles game

As Muslim Spain splinters into rival taifa kingdoms, its power fades. Meanwhile, the Christian kingdoms seize their chance to march south. In the shifting world of the Reconquista, Moors and Christians sometimes even join forces to achieve common goals. It’s an age of heroes and legends, shaped above all by El Cid, the archetype of the medieval knight and larger-than-life champion of a rising Castile.
Reconquista is a strategy game for 3–4 players set in 11th-century Spain, during the wars between Moors and Christians.

In a game of Reconquista, players take the role of one of the four kingdoms fighting for control of the Iberian Peninsula: Castile and León, Aragon, Seville, or Zaragoza.

Each round, players collect Income to invest in Troops and Castles. Once ready, they'll move their Armies on the board to conquer new territories.

Although conquests and income management are key elements of the game, the core lies in Battles and Sieges. Players must be careful when moving their Armies and watch out for sudden victories.
Manage your kingdom, collect taxes, build castles, recruit armies, and make your faction the most influential of the era.
