Echoes of Yesterday | Cassette Playing Cards

Echoes of Yesterday | Cassette Playing Cards

What Is Yesterday?

It’s a question I often ask myself.

Perhaps yesterday is everything we carry in our memories—the moments that stay with us and quietly shape who we are.

These memories are the starting point for Echoes of Yesterday. Through playing cards, we want to explore them through art and design.

To bring the past a little closer, we chose a more traditional way of creating. The illustrations, including the court cards, were drawn by hand with a dip pen.

Let’s go back.

Rewind to the Cassette

For our first design, we’re starting with the cassette tape.

A cassette holds more than music. It holds memories—the songs we played, the moments they belonged to, and the feelings that return when we hear them again.

We’ve brought that idea to life in two editions: Orange and Brown.

A Note on the Name: Echose

“Echose” is a coined name that brings together two forms of wordplay: it reverses the final two letters of “Echoes” while also introducing a French connection.

The French element comes from “chose,” meaning “thing” or “object.” By connecting it with the English word “echo,” we give “Echose” the idea of “an object that echoes”—an old, familiar object that brings memories back. This reflects our cassette-inspired playing cards and the nostalgia behind Echoes of Yesterday.

To avoid confusion, we’ll use “Echoes” in contexts where clarity is especially important. Elsewhere, we’d like to preserve the distinctive spelling “Echose.”

The Tuck Box

The experience begins with the box.

We designed a side-opening tuck box to echo the familiar gesture of taking out a cassette tape.

To us, good design should feel as good as it looks. Textured cardstock, raised and recessed details, and foil stamping give the box a tactile character you can appreciate the moment you pick it up.

The Cards

Play. Pause. Play.

The court cards and numerals have all been custom-designed. Riffle through the deck, and a special animation comes to life.

A little movement, a familiar rhythm, and a moment from the past in your hands.
