Gameplay Overview

The five powers, alliances, economy, cards & components

No dice

Combat in Epochia is deterministic. The stronger force wins — every time. There is no roll that takes a battle away from you.
When you lose, it traces back to a decision. A fleet committed two turns early. A border left thin while you pushed elsewhere. A card held one round too long.

That doesn't mean you can see everything. Cards can boost a force's strength, and players choose whether and when to play them, so the balance can shift at the moment of commitment. The tension comes from reading your opponents — not from a dice probability.

Inspiration...

I've been reading about the ancient world since I was a kid, and I've spent years travelling to see what's left of it — Southern Turkey, Crete - Knossos, Kos, Rhodes, Egypt - Giza, Saqqara, Aswan, Luxor, Edfu Temple, Abydos temple of Seti I., Kim Ombo temple, and others. The rest came from everywhere else. Historical films and the strategy games I grew up with gave me the feeling I wanted at the table — the scale of it. Paul Cooper's Fall of Civilizations, Britannica, and a long list of other reading gave me the substance underneath: what these places actually were, who lived there, and how they ended.

A lot of Epochia came out of that mix. The illustrations were built from my own photographs and from historical references and other materials from movies and games, so what you see on the map is grounded in real places rather than invented ones.

The goal for EPOCHIA

The goal is simple: fund the first print run of Epochia.

The game is finished. The design is done, the artwork is done, the rulebook is done, and the final production sample is with the manufacturer. What’s left is the part I can’t do alone — printing it.

This is an independent project. No publisher, no outside funding. A game with this much original art and this many components only reaches a sensible price at volume, and volume is exactly what a first-time independent designer can’t commit to on his own. That’s what this campaign is for.

Reaching the funding goal means Epochia gets manufactured and shipped. Anything beyond it goes back into the game — better components, and the stretch goals listed below.

If it doesn’t fund, nobody is charged and the game stays on my table.
