The Guy
Hi! My name is Ilya, I am a designer, maker, and tabletop nerd from Vilnius, Lithuania. May I present to you my 5th crowdfunding campaign - a fully colored, modular, portable set of 28 mm sci-fi “dungeon” tiles, that also converts into various 3D terrain on the go.
Why: pre-colored
I spent a lot of time looking for a high-quality, affordable, sustainable way to produce fully colored terrain. Many options were rejected, before I found the current solution - industrial grade digital printing on plastic film.
How is it made? Large 450x320 cm sheets are printed at a professional print shop in Lithuania (EU), glued onto 2.5 brown-stained HDF board, and precisely laser-cut. (The trickiest part to solve was aligning the print within the laser cutter!)
Four of such sheets make the Core set: all the tiles, portals, and doors. The print is super sharp, colors are most vibrant, the film is scratch-resistant and waterproof too.
Why: modular
Simply reskinning my fantasy tiles would be lazy and boring, thus I ended up with a system of standard 1” grid rooms and wider 40 mm corridors, accompanied with regular 1”-wide doors and larger iris portals.
At some point I realized: with some clips and supports, we can turn these flat tiles into three-dimensional structures. With this simple addition, you can build anything!
Room tiles become roofs, corridors become walls. The Airlock is now a landing pad, rounded 3x3 corners make a power shield generator, and the Greenhouse converts into massive radio telescope!
In addition, I designed a number of smaller scatter 3D pieces, all of which can be used in two or more ways. Upside-down cryopods become market stalls, crates make tables and AC units, generators turn to be dumpsters, standing cargo containers look like data vaults!
Why: durable
I like HDF (high density fiberboard) because it’s affordable, always in stock, cuts nicely with a laser cutter, and is 100% made of recycled wood. HDF is much more durable, and feels more premium in your hands than usual boardgame chipboard. It is as dense as plywood, and has nice weight to it too.
Why: portable
The whole Core set fits nicely into a lunch box, along with doors & 3D scatter. For clips and girders I recommend a small compartment box. I wanted Facility 404 to be easy to store and transport, for those of us who play at a friend's house or who simply doesn't have much space at home (me).
Showcase: the Desert
The project started as a simple set of tiles for sci-fi RPGs like Starfinder, Traveller, Mothership, CyBorg, AlienRPG, Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, and many others…
Showcase: the Radar
…Now, with single Core set and an Upgrade kit you can set up a proper 3x3 battlefield for tabletop skirmish games like Space Weirdos (my favorite), Stargrave, Five Parsecs From Home...
Showcase: the 40.000
...and if WH40k is your jam, Facility 404 makes nice 11e terrain. But please try SW Legion or Xenos Rampant sometime, these are great army games!
Contents: Core set
The Core set contains all the rooms, corridors and doors you need to set up an exciting indoor encounter: an underground research facility, a corporate headquarters, an abandoned spaceship.
The set composition might change slightly, but the volume of stuff won’t change: the Core set is comprised of eight fully printed 22x30 cm sheets worth of terrain.
Contents: Upgrade kit
The Upgrade kit adds 3rd dimension to Facility 404:
- clips and girders to turn the Core tiles into 3D structures;
- enough pieces to make at least 6 columns;
- 25 pieces of 3D scatter.
The Upgrade kit comes as a single brown-stained 2.5 MDF sheet (clips, girders and scatter parts) and two 22x30 cm sheets of thick color-printed cardstock of scatter terrain. These 3D pieces are 1 part cardstock and 1 or 2 brown MDF parts each, and require a simple one-time assembly with a drop of glue.
Contents: Digital pack
The Digital pack includes every tile and bit designed for this project, in both PDF and STL form. The package is work in progress, and I hope to add more designs and variations after the campaign ends.
STL files optimized for FDM printing:
- Tiles, including extra designs and variants.
- Girders & clips, including extra designs and variants.
- Portals, doors, and furnishings from the Upgrade pack (as solid 3D objects).
High-resolution PDF files:
- Tiles, portals, doors & 3D scatter as papercraft models.
- Original colored option.
- Ink-saving black and white option.
- Both A4 and US Letter formats.
Free print-and-play
I believe our hobby should be accessible to anyone. This free print-and-play includes everything you need to set up any interior encounter for your players: all the tiles from the core set (with some variations too), portals, doors, and a couple of smaller pieces like fans and hatches.
PDF files are 300 DPI full-color in both A4 and US Letter formats. The STLs are simplified flat designs that match their PDF counterpart, if you wish to stick your PDF print-outs to something more firm.
Grab the files from Google Drive, no strings attached. And send me some pictures when you put your kit in use!
Stretch goals
I still have a bunch of ideas, sketches, and experiments that haven’t made it to the physical prototype. Some of them are designed and ready, some are yet to be tested and polished. Most of them will require additional machining time, many - extra material too. If Facility collects enough money to support these extras, I’ll be happy to do the work and make the set even better!
CORE means this SG will be added to every physical Core set. UP will extend or improve each ordered physical 3D Upgrade set. PM stands for those extra add-ons that will be available in Pledge Manager, for little extra cash. Everyone who backed for Digital pack gets DIGITAL tagged stretch goals, free of charge (inc. PM add-ons).
4000£ ♦ Objective markers
Twelve round objective markers with numbers 1 to 6 and letters A to F. Or would you like something else? We already have 6 portal doors, which means 12 30mm circular cut-offs we can put anything on. Please suggest your ideas in the comments or via direct message. CORE + DIGITAL
5700£ ♦ Extra bits: weapons, items, tech
We still have some space on the sheets in between some tiles, which can be cramped up with smaller gubbins like gadgets, weapons, mysterious green glowing containers and what not. Again, suggestions welcome! CORE+ DIGITAL
6500£ ♦ Files for multi-color FDM printing
For my fellow go-brrrrr enthusiasts, I would put together a multi-colored option of the tiles. DIGITAL
7400£ ♦ Ruined corridors & bits
Extra parts for the brown sheet. One of my friends suggested adding some bare metal frame corridor tiles (a consequence of crash or fire, perhaps?). I also have a bunch of other “metal” bits laying around my HDD, so let’s put them in use! UP + DIGITAL
8500£ ♦ Fancy tiles add-on
The Core set is packed with most usable and versatile pieces, thus those more unorthodox and quirky designs didn’t make it. I would finish these beautiful misfits into a little single-sheet add-on, which will be available in Pledge manager for around 12£.
??? ♦ Life-size sci-fi coins add-on
One day, while designing Facility, I got distracted sketching various sci-fi RPG trinkets like currency, medals and insignia. Wouldn't it be cool to have an A4 sheet worth of double-sided printed 3-4mm MDF trinkets from around the Observable Universe? PM + DIGITAL
??? ♦ Universal game tokens & rulers
When playing miniature games, I prefer measuring sticks to collapsible metal rulers, so I made my own long ago. A set of system-agnostic tokens (to track HP, conditions and such) would be also great, and I would love to design it together with you (so we could cover for virtually any wargame or TTRPG out there!). PM + DIGITAL

Made by human(s)
Everything you see is designed by me alone, using mostly paper, pencil, and Adobe Illustrator. The texture is actual acrylic paint sponged on a large plywood sheet, photographed and tweaked in Photoshop. The project started way back in 2023, and changed a lot since then. Would you like a post with more sketches and behind-the-scenes?
Comments and critique welcome. While the designs are complete, there is room for improvement. What have I missed? Is something too much? Genuinely, any feedback is helpful. Feel free to comment or to message me directly through KS or email (ilya@9d10games.com).
Why Kickstarter?
In 2024, I had to leave my cozy workshop in Klaipėda, sell my equipment and move to Vilnius. Here, I tried to make a quick buck crowdfunding a second print run for my previous project, while outsourcing manufacturing to local companies. This turned into a disaster: everything that could possibly go wrong, did. I did managed to deliver (after almost two years of struggle and cortisol bath), but swore never to repeat my mistakes.
This project, and any future terrain projects, I’m manufacturing myself, outsourcing only most non-critical things. My goal now is to establish a new workshop in Vilnius and purchase a new laser-cutting machine. Nothing fancy, a decent workhorse would be a great start. With this, I need your help ❤️
All pictures are shot by yours truly, with my old trusty Sony A7, at our awesome local club Wargamer.lt in Vilnius. The typeface used is Raleway by Matt McInerney, Pablo Impallari, and Rodrigo Fuenzalida.
