For years, I've worked as a fantasy illustrator, creating artwork for Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and illustrated editions of some of my favorite fantasy novels. It's a career I love. I've spent countless hours bringing extraordinary characters, creatures, and imaginary worlds to life.

But there's something different about sitting down in front of a blank canvas with no assignment, no art director, and no story to illustrate but my own. That's where The Leftbehind began.

I've always been fascinated by statues. There's something evocative about them. Figures frozen in time, sometimes worn and forgotten, but still carrying the weight of whatever they were meant to represent.

Each painting holds it's own visceral meaning, a figure that seems to have survived a world we never got to see. Some suggest grief. Others devotion, beauty, sacrifice, or hope. I don't necessarily want to tell you exactly what each one means. I want you to find something in them that means something to you.

These paintings have become some of my favorite pieces I've ever created. And with this Kickstarter, I want to share them in a new way.

THE PLAYMATS

Some of my favorite memories are of sitting around a table with friends, playing games and disappearing into imaginary worlds for a few hours. I love the idea of bringing these paintings into those moments.

This isn't a campaign to fund the manufacturing of the playmats. They're already here! This is a campaign to fund the time and manufacturing of making more!

Unlike many crowdfunding projects, the playmats featured in this campaign have already been manufactured. That means there's no waiting for production runs, manufacturing approvals, or overseas freight before fulfillment can begin.

Every independent painting I create takes time away from commissioned work. That's part of the challenge of being a working artist. The projects that pay the bills aren't always the ones that let you explore your own ideas.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

I'm Allen Morris, a fantasy illustrator working in both traditional and digital media.

My professional illustration work includes Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and projects with publishers including Grim Oak Press and The Broken Binding.

I've always loved the tradition of narrative painting: artwork that tells a story, invites you into another world, and rewards you for looking a little closer.
