Terrain builders have always known a secret.
If you’ve ever built a board from scratch — foam hills, ruins, trenches, underhive floors — you’ve probably ended up with a bucket of glue, paint, water, and grit mixed together by feel. Not because it’s elegant. Because it works.
Seal the foam.
Lock the texture.
Give yourself a neutral surface to paint on.
Everyone ends up reinventing the same gray slurry sooner or later.
Gray Matter was born out of that exact reality.
WHERE THIS CAME FROM
I build terrain the way most of us do:
insulation foam, MDF, cork, sand, rubble, whatever’s on hand.
And every build hit the same problems:
Spray primer melts foam.
Craft sealers dry weak or glossy.
DIY mixes work, but cost time and guesswork.
Hobby-branded solutions are small, expensive, and not meant for whole boards.
So I did what builders have always done — I mixed my own.
Then I refined it.
Then I refined it again.
Eventually, the bucket stopped being a workaround and started feeling like a tool.
That’s when I realized: this shouldn’t live in a garage.
It should live on a workbench.
WHAT GRAY MATTER IS
Gray Matter Terrain Coat is a builder-grade, PVA-based terrain coating designed for tabletop worlds.
It’s not a miracle product.
It’s not magic.
It’s the proven chemistry terrain builders already trust — bottled, consistent, and ready to use.
Gray Matter is designed to:
• Seal foam safely
• Bind sand, grit, cork, and rubble
• Create a tough, paint-ready surface
• Provide a neutral gray base optimized for drybrushing
One application replaces multiple steps and removes spray cans from the workflow entirely.
No fumes.
No foam melt.
No craft-store compromises.
WHY IT’S GRAY (AND WHY THAT MATTERS)
Gray isn’t an accident.
Neutral gray hides sins, reveals texture, and takes paint better than white or black. It lets drybrushing do the work instead of fighting contrast.
Urban ruins.
Hive cities.
Bunkers.
Rocky outcrops.
Industrial floors.
Gray Matter doesn’t force an aesthetic — it gets out of the way and lets you finish the job.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Gray Matter is for people who build:
• Full terrain boards
• Scratch-built ruins
• Club tables
• Tournament setups
• Modular scenery
It’s made for builders who think in square feet, not bases.
WHO THIS IS NOT FOR
Let’s be clear — this protects everyone.
Gray Matter is not:
• A miniature primer
• A craft sealer
• A flexible armor coating
• A waterproofing product
It’s not meant for cosplay or fine mini painting.
It’s a terrain tool.
If you already know why that distinction matters, you’re the audience.
WHY KICKSTARTER
This project doesn’t exist to chase hype.
Kickstarter lets this happen the right way:
• Bulk materials
• Proper bottling and sealing
• Clean labeling
• Careful packing and shipping
The formula works.
The workflow works.
This campaign simply funds the first real production run.
No venture capital.
No hobby tax.
Just making a solid tool available to the people who will actually use it.
THE PHILOSOPHY
Terrain is the foundation of every game.
It’s the part everyone plays on and almost no one sees credited. It deserves materials that respect the time and effort builders put into it.
Gray Matter exists because builders shouldn’t have to keep reinventing the same bucket of goop every time they start a new board.
FINAL WORD
If you build terrain — not just miniatures, but worlds —
Gray Matter was made for you.
Back the project.
Get the first production run.
Put it to work
