How to play 👹

Ashton by Shelfside teaches you how to play GrimBrew!

Take one of the three face-up Ingredients from the market into your Lab. Each carries one or two symbols and a color. Some even have effects. Choose wisely!

Flames fuel your Lab, and they burn out. Spend a turn to rekindle two and keep brewing.

Match the Ingredients in your Lab to a Potion's recipe, spend them, and claim the Victory Points.

Some Potions give you permanent symbols and colors to brew with. Others pay out at the end. Brew more now, or score bigger later.

The right Ingredients set Mawlings loose on a rival's Lab. Every time they brew, Mawlings steal Victory Points off the top and bring them home to you.

GrimBrew is an 🇺🇸/🇬🇧 English-language game, and all components will be manufactured in English.

We're translating the rulebook into 🇮🇹 Italian, 🇫🇷 French and 🇪🇸 Spanish. They will be free to download when GrimBrew ships. The cards and components will stay in English.

The Lore 📖

The Artist 🎨

Every illustration in GrimBrew comes from one artist: Jourdan. He's an Indonesian born concept artist currently living in Australia. Jourdan has spent more than a decade working hard at his craft, and we're honored to have him bring the world of GrimBrew to life.

None of it started as a finished illustration. Hours went digging into folklore and mythology research before any line went down. Then came sketches, and we went back and forth until the shape felt right. From there Jourdan tightened the linework, built up the color and shading, and saved a final pass for the "wow factor": details that make you stop and look twice.

The Shinigami Skull is a good example of this process. We began with research into ancient death folklore and the Grim Reaper, and went all the way to modern takes like Death Note and Soul Eater, along with recent yokai interpretations. From there, Jourdan sketched the shape, refined the linework, added color and shading, and gave it a final pass to become the gorgeous Skull we have today.

And here is the box cover, from sketch to done!
