An urban fantasy RPG about monster hunting 20-somethings tracking and slaying threats to humanity, with a unique hybrid game system that splits between noir investigation and highly-stylized anime action.
The Pact is a global enchantment that keeps the supernatural and the mundane from mixing. For centuries, it's kept humans more-or-less safe from monsters, and knowledge of magic faded away into legends and secrets.
Except now it's the 21st century, the internet is a thing, and magic is the world's worst-kept secret. You can look that shit up on google, find all the info you need to break free from the Pact's protection. Take the Rite and you're part of the supernatural world, you can see and use magic and finally find out what's been lurking beneath the surface all your life. You're also a target, and humanity's last life of defence against the increasing number of monsters who've found loopholes through the Pact's defences.
You're a slayer: an action hero, a wizard, a martial arts badass. You have to be, because you took the Rite and if you hadn't learned to fight, you'd already be dead. Save the city and the people you love, scrape together money for rent, and keep the party going as the status quo between magic and the mundane threatens to shatter.

Mechanics
Combat revolves around a dramatic dice-pool driven system where all you need is one hit to win, but landing that hit is an extended contest of wits and commitment. Inspired by board game design, use physical markers to visualize your combat strategy and make tactical choices in duels inspired by action games and anime.
Between fights, players split up and race against the clock to investigate cases and prepare for the inevitable showdown. Take strength from the promises you've made to other people: caring is hard, but it might give you what you need to push yourself past the finish line.

The alpha version of Gunmetal Sonata is a playable game, but it's still rough around the edges and lacks some features we've always wanted to include. This campaign will fund the process of turning a draft game into a fully-polished .pdf document, with the option for print-on-demand copies fulfilled by DriveThruRPG. Basic funding goals include:
- [x] pieces of original full-colour artwork to illustrate the game's characters and setting
- [x] words of new writing, providing more information about the game's setting and guidance for both players and GMs looking to bring it to life.
- A completed advancement section to allow for longer campaigns.
- Professional layout and graphic design, including printable game elements like a custom clock and character sheets.

As a Canadian team, we’ve opted to forgo a large-scale print run for Gunmetal Sonata. Backers will receive a .pdf copy, as well as a code for an at-cost print on demand hard copy on DriveThruRPG.
Behind the Scenes
Gunsong is a game I worked on for a few years before covid and life distracted me. I'd always planned on bringing the draft I created in 2021 to the finish line, and Gamefound's RPG Party is an incredible opportunity to do just that.
