Hispania describes 1,500 years of Spanish and Portuguese history, from 320 BC to 1200 AD. During this period, many peoples and empires invaded Hispania. Many of these peoples or empires, called “Nations” in this game, attempted to colonize or conquer Hispania. But the new conquerors were unable to maintain their power for long. In turn, they were defeated by other invaders.

The game ends after the great migrations, at the dawn of the Reconquista of Muslim Hispania by its Catholic half.

In Hispania, each player controls several different Nations. During the game, the player accumulates victory points with each of their Nations. The player with the most victory points will be victorious at the end of the game!

During the game, a series of historical events unfold, which players will see represented by the various appearances on the scene of the nations that intervened in the history of Hispania, as well as numerous events that will occur over the course of the game.

The Map

The map shows Hispania (Spain and Portugal), with a set of 51 Hispanic regions, 1 African region and 3 entry areas outside the map (Aquitania, Septimania, Africa). Each region on the map is marked with its name.

There are different types of regions:

Mountainous regions (difficult terrain), which represent mountainous relief (for example, the region of Granada). Movement will be limited, except for some units, as will stacking.

Mountain passes between certain regions (e.g., between Septimania and Illerda, or between Cartagena and Baetica), which allow passage between these regions as if they were areas of open terrain, but battles fought after passing through them will have a special ambush phase.

The dotted lines in Cuenca and Vizcaya represent valleys likely to movement and allow these areas to be considered clear terrain (for movement only if along the dotted lines).

The marshes (difficult terrain), with a pattern of swamps, as in the Algarve.

Regions known as “Clear lands,” or “plains.”

Islands (Mallorca, Minorca, and Ibiza).

Finally, Areas outside Hispania, such as Africa, Aquitania and Septimania.

Counters

Each counter indicates the name of the nation to which it belongs, an image representing the unit type, a symbol (emblem or coat of arms) specific to each nation, one to three gray balls representing its hit points, a symbol for specific units (knights, cavalry, elite, mountaineers, veterans, royal units), and for leaders their names and the turns in which they are in play. The colours of counters help the sorting and assignment to each of the four possible players.

There are different types of counters, such as: Infantry, Elite, Royal Guards, Knight, Cavalry, Mountain Troops, Castle, City, Fort, Mountain Fortress, or Leader.

Nation Sheets and game aids

Hispania includes a Nation Sheet for each of the nations involved in the game. These sheets contain most of the information relating to each nation: arrival of certain reinforcements, special rules, victory points, etc. Those elements are also summarized in the rules.

Each player has a Game Aid containing various information to facilitate play (special rules, events, token stacks, reduced map, etc.).

Dice

Special white (18) and black (12) dice are used for combat. These two types of dice are customized and display different icons representing the outcome of combat.

There are also 2 Six-sided dice, used for everything else (except combat).

The game has a complete 44-pages rules manual, including illustrated examples of play, optional and advanced rules, scenarios, remarks and appendices (with a bibliography for those who want to learn more about History).

A copy of the rules can be downladed here.
