Introduction

Welcome to Hob's Clockwork Dungeon! Here players enter a world where dungeons roam across the land, deadly rooms shift their position, and mechanical misfits whir and clank through shadowy halls. This project includes more than twenty room maps, a modifiable dungeon module with more than sixty pages of challenges, puzzles, traps and new monsters to fight! Plus a new and easy to run rules system that stands alone OR can be modified to work with Dungeons and Dragons, 5e, OSR, Pathfinder or any fantasy roleplaying system.

The Dungeon grows in size as we pass stretch goals!

Read on for more project details:

A windup bat creature floats above.
Mechanical monsters and magical constructs are featured throughout the dungeon.
A map of dank room with broken floor tiles. Cages in the floor house dark creatures. One of them reaches out with multiple tentacles.
A tentacle wielding fiend stalks the vents and passages in the dungeon. Is it the master's pet? Or a big bad of unspeakable power?

The Clockwork Dungeon is a notorious haunt of gears and stone where adventurers risk death and dismemberment in search of treasure and fame. Not long ago, the gnomish inventor, Hodrick Hobbleswik, secreted away his fortune in a diabolical dungeon of his own creation. Only the bold and ingenious can work their way through the puzzles inside and reap the rewards. But does an eccentric gnome genius wait at the journey's end or has something more sinister seized control of the dungeon from its master?

A cartoonish octopus creature with three eyes smiles at its next meal.
A map of the room of readiness. The pictured staging area has a chest, crates, and a well in the corner. At the center of the room is an area with stacked pallets and a cozy fire ring.
Rooms of readiness provide players with a safe place to rest. But they might also encounter rival adventurers here!

Customize The Dungeon

Inside the book are rules for fully customizing the dungeon to fit any campaign. Does the dungeon walk on mechanical legs or does it teleport each day at dawn? Do the rooms move each time players enter and exit? Or when a hidden switch is activated? Are there competing groups of adventurers in the dungeon? Or do the ghosts of fallen heroes stalk the halls? Is the final boss a mischievous gnome inventor or an immense tentacle monster that has taken up residence?  All these options, and many more, help gamemasters craft a completely unique dungeon setting. Or, if the gm can't decide which options to use, roll on random tables to determine what players encounter.

A cartoonish stone golem throws a huge fist toward the observer. This creature is featured as a mini boss in the dungeon.
Beware of boss monsters like the stone golem above!
A map of a maze of rooms. Multiple corridors twist and turn at right angles sometimes halting at dead ends. One room is featured in the Southeast corner of the map. A tidy study where weary spirits can relax. Faintly disappearing footprints can be seen entering this room.
A maze of rooms hides a tidy study where weary spirits relax their tortured minds.

Plot a Course or Roll for Random Rooms

A variety of encounters await players inside the dungeon. These can be arranged randomly or the gamemaster can plot a course ahead of time deciding what pcs confront next. Chess puzzles, physical conflicts, black pits of death, mechanical traps, riddles, and monsters are all represented in the dungeon.

This map features a square room filled with pillars and crates. The crates can be pushed out of the way to make room for clockwork soldiers. The object of this room is to guide the soldiers from the entrance to a trapdoor where they exit the room. Arrows drawn on the floor tiles show the direction the soldiers walk.
Windup soldiers enter the room, but cannot find the exit without the help of adventures. Push the crates out of the way to create a path for the toy soldiers.
A mate in two chess puzzle is depicted in by this map. A square room with a chess board in the center is already filled with a number of pieces. The chess puzzle can be solved in two moves by black, culminating in a check mate.
A mate in two chess puzzle awaits a player's solution. Move the wrong piece and a trap is triggered.

New Rules to Follow or Modify

Hob's Clockwork Dungeon is built around a One Trait Roleplaying system (complete rules are provided inside), and conversion tables in the appendix make Hob's easy to run using 5e, 5.5, or any system.

Another map of a dungeon room. This one consists of four crumbling islands of stone, each with its own exit to the room. Players must jump a distance of fifteen feet to reach any of the island. Alternatively, they can try to jump to some rotating platforms that move counter clockwise around a large crystal at the center of the room.
Though the dungeon is filled with brainteasers, there are physical challenges too! This room holds a vast pit to cross. Some rotating platforms should help bridge the gap (if the players can find a way to slow them down).

Rotating Dungeon Rooms!?!

The rooms in Hob's Clockwork Dungeon move around the dungeon floor on tracks making for a challenging and disorienting adventure. Players need to not only best the puzzles in the dungeon, but figure out the way to the end! As the rooms move around them, PCs may find themselves wandering in circles.

In this sample map, rooms are numbered 1 to 20 plus special rooms. After beating the puzzle or challenge in each room, players can exit to the north, south, east, or west (unless the doors remain sealed :-)). For example, room number 9, in the center, is connected to 6, 7, 13, and the void room (more on this special room later). If players should exit room 9 to the west they will end up in room 7. However, if the dungeon rooms rotate while the players remain in room 7 it will move up one spot in the grid. This means if they exit to the east they'll now be in room 15, not room 9! A very confusing challenge to overcome!

Original Hand-Drawn Art

The pdf and print-on-demand book include fun and original hand-drawn art made by real humans. Most of the monsters come with digital tokens ready to be used on virtual table tops or discord. Dungeon room maps are also VTT ready and included as jpegs for ease of use.

A fairy bottle battery cell is picture here. It is a glass tube capped at each end with metal. Inside the bottle a fairy faintly glows. Players can use these batteries to power traps and doors in the dungeon.
Fairy Bottle Battery Cells are here to open doors and power machines. Get yours while supplies last!
A button is picture here with a cartoonish dragon head on it. It is questionable whether the button will summon a dragon or call down fire from the ceiling. Or it may have an entirely different purpose.
Will pressing the dragon button release a scaly foe? Or bring hellfire to the party's enemies?

Stretch Goals

Stretch Goals are picture here. The more this project is funded, the bigger the final dungeon will be. At $3500 the dungeon will have 5 levels and 100 totat rooms.

The dreaded okolich is pictured. This creature is described in detail in the Monsters and Lairs book. Available as an add on with this project. The okolich has dozens of stolen eyes where its brain should be. A seriously spooky threat.
An enormous worm monster is looks ready to devour anything in its way. This creature is blind, but can sense prey through vibrations in the ground. The monster is the focal point of the one shot adventure Den of the DIgglewump. This adventure is available as an add on to this project.
A banner for Dungeon Drop-ins. A twisted old monster , the devious collector, is featured on the banner. This creature attempts to trade or steal the party's treasure. If threatened it relies on tricks to survive. A long nose, pointy ears, and tusks give the creature a malevolent appearance.
A starry night sky showcases a blue planet with a pale moon. This banner picture is for the project Velos Wing, a gamemaster's toolkit for any science fiction ttrpg. A birdlike spaceship is also pictured.
