(“Ointment, ointment… send me to the walnut tree of Benevento, under the water and in the wind, under any adverse weather…”, the formula that the Janare used while applying the ointment that allowed them to reach the walnut tree used for the sabbath)
Night falls on Samnium.
The wind blows through the fields, river Sabato flows in the darkness, and, in the heart of the night, something crawls in the woods.
Houses are silent, families asleep.
Doors are locked.
But the Janare are on their way already.
For centuries, Benevento has preserved a tradition made of mysterious women who moved (and still do) through the night wind, capable of dark magic, but also of healing, and gathered beneath a tree, the legendary “Noce di Benevento” (the Walnut Tree of Benevento), for their nocturnal rites. This tradition is the soul that gave life to our game.
The Game
JANARE – Il Sabba di Benevento, is a competitive game for 1-4 players, taking approximately 30 minutes to complete, inspired by the legends and folklore from Samnium. It uses a regular deck of playing cards to simulate the average night of a Janara, the witches of Benevento. It was born from the desire to translate the rich and fascinating myth that permeates the area around Benevento, Samnium, into a fun game where every element is taken directly from the tradition: from the ointment they used to fly, to the incantations and the formulas that were used. Even the locations.
Each player takes the role of a Janara (the mythical witches from Benevento) and competes with the others to collect the most power for the sabbath that will happen before sunrise.
Prepare potions, cast evil spells, visit locations to obtain what you need, perform the daily activities of a witch. But beware of the traditional remedies and protections that the villagers and citizens might have prepared to keep their homes safe. Salt at the threshold. A broom by the door. Old wives’ tales but… they work. Remember, though: night is not eternal. The dawn will arrive and by the time it comes, the sabbath will be over. And you don’t want to miss it.
Will you manage to collect enough power, overcome the obstacles, reach the Walnut Tree before it’s too late, and become tonight’s Queen of the Sabbath?
The game is also accompanied by an introduction, telling the myths surrounding the Janare, and a dictionary of the terms, with the correct pronunciation.
Janare is perfect to play in the winter nights, when darkness falls early and you can feel the eerie atmosphere outside, while you're sitting in your warm, cozy home. Sit with your friends around the table. Prepare the cards. Pour some hot chocolate. And… wait. Did you remember to put a broom, or salt, in front of the door?
How it plays
Each player takes the role of a Janara, represented by one of the Queens from the deck. They all start at Home, with the whole night ahead of them and only a few hours before dawn.
Move, act, draw.
On your turn, you travel along the lines of the pentagram, to the woods, the farmland, the Leproso Bridge, or the Sabato River. Then you choose what to do. Gather herbs. Brew the Ointment. Cast the Evil Eye on a rival. You can perform several other actions, but we don't want to spoil you the surprise. Then you draw a card, and see if the action was successful.
Beware the obstacles.
Not everything goes well. Draw a Jack and you might run into a broom by the door or a pile of salt at the threshold, and you must stop and count every grain. Draw a King and someone has caught you by your hair. Will they know the correct answer to the riddle, or will you manage to get free?
Race the dawn.
Every 3, 6, or 9 drawn moves the clock one hour closer to sunrise. At five in the morning, the sabbath is over.
A borrowed horse speeds up your ride, and the Ointment lets you fly farther. But there is only one way to the Walnut Tree, and it starts from the river. Reach it in time and you can join the Sabbath. Miss it, and all your power is for nothing.
Who will be the Queen of the Sabbath?
Every curse, every spell, and every night torment earns Power Points. When dawn comes, the witch at the Walnut Tree with the most Power Points is crowned the Lady of the Sabbath. Everyone else bows and begins to plan how to do better next time.
1-4 players | Standard deck of playing cards | Solo mode available: collect as many points as you can before dawn.
Current Status
The ruleset and the game components have been completed and tested. We are making final adjustments to the rulebook. The introduction has been drafted and we are in the process of finalising it and integrating it in the final book. You will receive updates during the campaign as our work proceeds.
The game will be in digital format only. We are studying the feasibility of a printed version, and if there is interest and we manage to make it possible, it will be added as a dedicated pledge level, with the possibility to add it as an add-on for those who have pledged already, or as a stretch goal. You will be duly informed about any change.
Who we are
Valhalla Realms Publishing is a one man project, dedicated to creating the games that I have always wanted to play, but never found in any published games. It has already successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign in December 2025, Drawn Battles.
This new game has been realised with my wife, one of the latest janare (I fell victim of her spell almost twenty years ago, and I'm still fascinated), as an expert on the matter.
Fulfillment
About two weeks after the successful conclusion of the campaign, the time Kickstarter usually takes to complete the collection of the funds, backers will receive an email containing a link to redeem their digital copy of the game. Delivery will be fulfilled by DriveThru RPG, a well established and trusted company.

Perfino i luoghi.
Una scopa accanto all’uscio.
E… aspettate.
Come funziona
Conoscerà la rispsota all'indovinello, o riuscirai a liberarti?
Ogni azione nefanda fa guadagnare Punti Potere.
