The Missing Piece in Music Education

You don’t have to be a musician to raise a musical child.

You just need the right moment, a quiet afternoon, a curious kid, and something that makes listening feel like play.

Most parents want to give their children a musical foundation, but they don’t know where to start. Music lessons feel like a big commitment. Instruments are expensive. And most music education tools are designed for children who already know something about music.

We believe the missing piece isn’t lessons, it’s listening. The ability to hear a sound and identify it, to hold it in your memory, to connect a name to a timbre, that’s where musical intelligence begins. And it starts much earlier than most people think.

Where Listen Up! Comes From

At ColorMeMozart, we’ve spent over 15 years building music education tools for families, including children with special needs, around one core belief: every child deserves to grow up musically fluent.

Our founder, Adrian Edward, author of The First Music Teacher, has seen firsthand what happens when young children are given early, playful exposure to music. They listen differently. They engage more deeply. They carry that sensitivity with them for life.

Listen Up! grew out of that work, a simple, beautiful card game that builds real music literacy without requiring a single lesson.

What’s in the Box

Listen Up! is an 80-card musical instrument memory game divided into two sets of 20 matching pairs, featuring strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboards, designed for children ages 3 to 7, and genuinely fun for the whole family.

Each set is beautifully illustrated, matte-laminated, and printed on rounded-corner 63×63mm cards that feel as good as they look.

The box includes:
— 80 matte-laminated, rounded-corner cards (63×63mm) in two sets
— Mozi, your child’s new musical best friend (plushie included!)
— An instruction booklet with 7 listening game variations
— A quick-reference card for parents
— An access card for the companion audio page

More Than a Memory Game

Every card connects to a free companion page at ColorMeMozart.com/listen-up, where parents can play short audio clips of each instrument in addition to other great resources. A child who learns to match the violin card also learns what a violin actually sounds like. That’s not just play, that’s early music literacy.

7 Ways to Play

The instruction booklet includes seven ways to play, from the classic memory match to creative listening games that grow with your child:

Classic Memory Match — the traditional flip-and-find pairs game, perfect for ages 3 and up.

Sound Guess — a parent plays an audio clip; the child finds the matching card from a face-up spread. A great introduction to instrument sounds.

Orchestra Conductor — all cards face up, sounds play one at a time. First to grab the right card keeps it.

Soundscape Story — a sequence of three sounds plays; the child arranges the matching cards in order. Builds memory and sequencing skills.

Instrument Families — sort the cards by family: strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboards. A gentle introduction to how orchestras are organized.

Guess My Voice — one player hums or imitates an instrument; others race to find the card.

What’s Missing? — lay out cards, play their sounds, secretly remove one. Which instrument disappeared?

Start with Classic Match at age 3. By age 7, they’ll be sorting instrument families and recognizing sounds by ear.

Meet Mozi, Lili & Sali

Every copy of Listen Up! comes with a huggable plushie companion inspired by the great musicians of history. Mozi is joined by Lilly, a young cellist and composer, and Sali, Mozi’s loyal best friend.

They’re not just toys. They’re the child’s guide into the world of music, something to hold during the game, something to carry to music class, something that makes the whole experience feel like an adventure.

Why Kickstarter?

We’re bringing Listen Up! to Kickstarter because we want to build it with the people who will use it most: parents, music teachers, and families who believe that a musical childhood is worth investing in early.

Back this campaign and you’ll be among the first families to receive Listen Up! Every pledge helps us bring this into homes and classrooms across the country.

You don’t need to be a musician to raise a musical child. But a little head start never hurts.

About the Creator

Adrian Edward is a music educator, curriculum designer, and author with over 25 years of experience bringing music to young learners. He is the founder of ColorMeMozart, a music education company dedicated to giving every child, including those with special needs, an early and joyful relationship with music. His work spans classrooms, homeschool programs, and families across the country, built around the belief that musical fluency begins long before a child ever touches an instrument.

He is the author of The First Music Teacher, a guide for parents and caregivers who want to nurture musical intelligence from the very first years of a child’s life. Through ColorMeMozart, he has developed a growing library of educational tools, from songbooks and coloring curricula to interactive games, all designed to make music feel like play.

Listen Up! is his first physical game, and the debut of three original characters: Mozi, Lili, and Sali, each inspired by legendary musicians from history. He lives and works in North Carolina.
