Death to the Sixth Heaven Demon King!

Nobunaga’s Black Castle is the Sengoku doom metal fantasy TTRPG that is ready to melt your face off! Plunge into the Warring States period of a 16th century Japan that never was. In the game, the famed warlord Oda Nobunaga did not commit seppuku at Honnō-ji Temple as history records. He escaped the trap and continued to conquer. He became the true Sixth Heaven Demon King, summoned hordes of demons, and the world burned.

As a Player Character in Nobunaga's Black Castle, you are already dead. Nobunaga killed you and sent you to Hell. But your heart burned for vengeance, burned so hot that now you are back in this world. You have one overpowering desire: kill Oda Nobunaga!

Nobunaga’s Black Castle is a complete tabletop roleplaying game by Japanese designer Yusuke Tokita. Green Ronin, under license from CONOS, is publishing Nobunaga’s Black Castle in English for the first time.

Nobuborg!

Nobunaga’s Black Castle is compatible with MÖRK BORG, the Swedish RPG from Ockult Örtmästare Games and the Stockholm Kartell. If you have played it or one of its many variants like Pirate Borg, CY_Borg, and Demon Dog, you already know how to play. If you haven’t, no worries. It’s a d20-based system with stripped down, easy-to-learn rules. Character creation is speedy, which is a necessity when character death is a regular occurrence (and it is).

Choose your fighter: Ashigaru Musketeer Renegade, Corrupted Court Noble, Heretical Sect Missionary, Mutated Oni Ninja, Outrage Sword Master, Maggot-Ridden Undead Samurai, or go your own way. Win 108 Glory and face the Demon King!

• Standard Edition: The Standard Edition of Nobunaga's Black Castle is a high quality 5.75" x 8.5" hardback book, with full color interior, color endpapers, and a sewn binding.
• Special Edition: The limited special edition version of the game feature a blood-red cloth binding with gold-stamped embossed art, black page edges, and a ribbon bookmark.

Soundtrack and Exclusive Adventure

Nobunaga’s Black Castle has an awesome soundtrack by composer "Nekonaya","ねこやな". You can hear one of the tracks in our campaign video above. You can get the soundtrack in two ways: mp3 files or a CD. Even cooler, the soundtrack includes a booklet with an exclusive adventure keyed to the songs. This adventure will not be reprinted elsewhere, so get this add-on if you want it! Also available in electronic form.

Character Sheet Notepad

A notepad with 50 tear-off full-color character record sheets for Nobunaga's Black Castle. The original Japanese version is pictured here so you can see what it looks like, but we'll be translating it fully into English.

Stretch Goals

Face down a powerful yōkai in a graphically oriented 8-page adventure inspired by Edo Period artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa’s famous woodblock print. This adventure will be added to the Rulebook.

$15,000: Valhalla Castle Grand Tournament - UNLOCKED!

A 14-page mini-campaign for starting characters participating in a tournament at Edo Castle. This adventure will be added to the Rulebook.

$20,000: Nakane's Moving Castle - UNLOCKED

Nakane Masateru, Lord of Futamata Castle, turned into a demon after drinking a potion made from Nobunaga’s fingernail clippings (pro-tip: don’t!), and now his fortress is on the offensive. It is up to your dead avengers to deal with it. This 6-page adventure, which includes a fold-out map, will be added to the Rulebook.

$30,000: Chant the Buddha’s Name Again and Again! - UNLOCKED!

This mini-campaign focuses on the religious factions that opposed Nobunaga, such as the Ikko-ikki. In addition to four scenarios, it includes a new character class, the Million-Crying Nembutsu Monk. This 12-page booklet will be added to the GM Screen.

$40,000: Ready-to-Play Characters - UNLOCKED!

Seven pre-generated Player Characters—one for each class—will be added to the GM Screen. The characters will be printed on individual sheets so they can be handed out to players at the table. Great for pick-up games, demos, etc.

$60,000: Demonic Yoshiwara! - LOCKED

An adventure that takes place in Tokyo in the pleasure district of Yoshiwara 50 years after Nobunaga became the Sixth Heaven Demon King. This 14-page adventure will be added to the Rulebook.

Contributor Bios

Yusuke Tokita - Designer and Creator: Yusuke Tokita, the designer and creator of Nobunaga's Black Castle, is tabletop RPG designer, game translator, and freelance writer active in Japan. The Abyss (深淵), his signature work, is a legendary title that captures the narrative essence of dark fantasy. He is currently working on a third edition.

He has also been involved in multiple TTRPG tiles based on the Shin Megami Tense video game series, including the English-localized Shin Megami Tensei RPG: Tokyo Conception. He also created Hieizan Enjo (The Burning of Mt. Hiei), a Sengoku-period supplement for Call of Cthulhu. His other original works include Paradise Fleet (a comical space opera using playing cards), Blue Rose (a modern supernatural action game), Black Shinsengumi: Bakumatsu Demon-Slaying Journey (a Bakumatsu-era ìdoom metal fantasyî also under the M÷RK BORG license), and Supernatural City Investigation File: Shinjuku, City of Sin (an occult police procedural), among many others. As a translator, he has led the localization of Shadowrun (4th, 20th Anniversary, and 5th editions), Eclipse Phase, and Tales from the Loop RPG. He was also part of the original translation team for the Japanese version of Magic: The Gathering. Additionally, he is known for introducing the Cthulhu Mythos to Japanese audiences and authored the Cthulhu Mythos Guidebook.

Su Mon Han - Translator: Su Mon is our translator for Nobunaga’s Black Castle. She is the author of the upcoming GADIA novel series and the creator of the Legends of Gadia card game. She grew up obsessed with JRPGs and aspired to be a mangaka until she realized that writing prose is way faster than drawing. As a professional Japanese-English translator, Su Mon has translated and adapted over 50 volumes of manga and 200 episodes of anime for major English-language publishers such as Hachette Books/Yen Press, Viz Media, Tokyopop, Aniplex USA, Sentai Filmworks, and Crunchyroll. Her notable works include the ALA Award-Winning The Story of Saiunkoku manga series, the Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV series plus Rebellion film, and the final five volumes of the Ouran High School Host Club manga.

Chris Pramas - English Edition Development: Chris is the founder and president of Green Ronin Publishing. He encountered Nobunaga's Black Castle at Tokyo Game Market in 2024 and determined to license it and bring it out in English. He is the project lead and developer for this edition of the game.

Shipping

You will be charged for shipping—and have an opportunity to adjust your pledge—after the campaign through BackerKit's pledge manager. Shipping in the USA will proceed as normal. Shipping anywhere else has some risks, and we want to be upfront about that. In all cases, you will pay the actual shipping cost.

As we're sure you've noticed, the United States is a shambles right now. It is a very difficult business environment, not only for the economic damage done by our own government but also the capriciousness of it all. Things change week-to-week and sometimes day-to-day. Especially considering the ongoing war with Iran and the impact of the Strait of Hormuz, we cannot predict what the state of international shipping will be come next year.

If you are a non-American supporter of Green Ronin, your safest bet will be to back the campaign with PDF rewards only. If you really want to get the books—and believe us, we'd love for you to have them—just understand that it could be a bumpy road. We will not be subsidizing shipping or paying extra fees (VAT, for example) on your behalf. We will do what we can to find solutions where possible, but our options are limited.
