What People are Saying

Of Popes & Plagues – Review
Publisher: @hillarystoybox
Designer: Tray Green, Dawn Payn, and the Green family
Artist: Giovanni Spadaro
The art strikes a perfect balance between grim and comedic, there’s something both darkly hilarious about a game where you win by being the last one alive while everyone else succumbs to disease, holy wars, or the literal Death Ship. Of Popes & Plagues is an unapologetically mean-spirited take-that filler game that leans fully into its medieval chaos. THIS IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! There was constant laughter, backstabbing, and “WHY would you do that to me?” moments every round. If you don’t take it too seriously the table talk of who should the group target next it’s hilarious.
Theme:
Set in the grim Middle Ages, Of Popes & Plagues casts players as leaders trying to grow and protect their populations through waves of prosperity and plague. The game starts in a relatively calm Prosperity phase, but quickly spirals into chaos once the Death Ship appears, ushering in the Plague. Players must survive wars, crusades, inquisitions, and diseases, all while attempting to outlive their opponents.
Mechanisms:
• Dice Roll : Each turn starts with a dice roll that either grows or diminishes your population, modified by cards or status effects.
• Take-That Card Play: Most cards are played on opponents to decrease their population or ruin their plans.
• Persistent Effects: Cards like Pestilence and the Inquisition stick to you, changing your dice results each turn until you can get rid of them.
• Improvements: Optional buildable upgrades like City Walls and Monasteries offer passive benefits or defensive boosts, giving players some long-term strategy amid the chaos.
• Plague Dice + Special Events: Dice rolls can trigger devastating effects—especially double Plague rolls—and activate permanent game state changes like the shift to the Plague phase.
Final Thoughts:
We wouldn’t play it every game night, but if you have 20 minutes it absolutely shines when you have the right group to embrace chaos and a little carnage. Just… maybe don’t play it with someone you just met. Haha
Jajaja.
