What Is the Vision Dice Tower?
The Vision Dice Tower is a physical dice tower that reads your real dice rolls and sends the results directly into your online tabletop games — starting with Roll20.
We’re Funded — Now Let’s Build What Comes Next
Because of our backers, the Vision Dice Tower is fully funded — which means this is happening.
Now we’re pushing toward stretch goals that expand what the tower can do without changing our delivery target (Q4 2026).
Stretch Goal: $10,000 Foundry VTT Support
Foundry is one of the most-requested platforms we hear about.
If we hit $10,000, we will add Foundry VTT support, bringing real dice rolls into Foundry the same way we’re doing with Roll20.
Help Us Unlock It
The fastest way to hit stretch goals is simple: share the campaign with your group, your Discord, or that one friend who owns 37 sets of dice and still buys more.
Also — we’ll be sending a short questionnaire to backers so future stretch goals focus on what you actually want most.
It Started with a Question Every Online GM Has Heard
If you’ve played tabletop RPGs online, you probably know someone who swears that digital dice rollers are cursed.
In our group, we have that player.
For years, across different platforms and campaigns, he rolled poorly. Not just “bad luck” — but improbably, campaign-altering disasters that left everyone staring at their screens and laughing in disbelief. One legendary moment? Rolling with advantage… then double advantage… and still coming up with a result that made our GM put his head in his hands.
No clatter. No tension. Just a silent number appearing on the screen.
Everyone joked about it, but it pointed to a real frustration: digital dice don’t feel real — and players don’t trust them.
Months before — in a totally separate session — another moment planted a different seed. During an in-person game, one of our players accidentally tapped a digital die roller at the same time he rolled a physical die.
Both landed on the same number. That sparked the sentence that changed everything:
“Wouldn’t it be cool if you could roll your real dice and have the result show up online?”
That was the spark. That was the beginning of the Vision Dice Tower.
And for collectors: as part of Kickstarter’s Make 100 initiative this year, the first 100 towers will be released in a special-edition color, individually numbered 1–100.
What's Broken in Online Tabletop Play
Online TTRPGs are convenient. They’re powerful. They bring people together across states and continents.
But let’s be honest: They don’t feel like real tabletop. Not yet.
You can sense it from the very first roll of the night.
Digital rollers lack everything that makes dice rolling magical.
There’s no sound, no touch, no ritual, no shared moment.
And the longer you play online, the more obvious that loss becomes.
The Real Pain Points
Digital Dice Feel Wrong — Emotionally and Physically
Rolling real dice is a ritual.
Rolling digital dice is a button press.
The weight, the clatter, the moment where everyone leans in — gone.
Gamers don’t just roll dice for numbers.
They roll for the experience.
Digital dice remove that experience completely.
Players Don’t Trust Computer-Generated Rolls
Even if the math is perfect, the experience is not.
When a digital roller delivers a streak of punishing results, it doesn’t feel like randomness — it feels cold and robotic.
Players trust:
- their hands
- their dice
- their rituals
- their luck
But they don’t trust a sterile animation in the corner of a screen.
Big Moments Fall Flat
A natural 20 should feel electric.
A natural 1 should echo with laughter (or groans).
Online? It’s a tiny number that pops up while someone else is talking.
The tension disappears. The payoff evaporates. The emotion gets flattened.
Hybrid Play Breaks Immersion — Especially for Streaming
When someone uses physical dice during an online session:
- the VTT doesn’t update
- the stream overlay doesn’t update
- chat gets confused
- the GM has to re-ask the roll
- the rhythm dies
Hybrid play should work. Instead, it slows everything down.
Dice Are An Identity — and Online Play Erases That
This is the heart of it. Dice aren’t randomizers. Dice are personal.
Dice carry:
- character themes
- campaign stories
- memories of triumph
- memories of disaster
- the personality of the player rolling them
Players build collections. They choose dice to match their characters. They invest in dice that feel lucky.
Online play erases all of that. Your dice become decorations on your desk instead of part of the game. For many players, that’s the biggest loss of all.
Our Solution: The Vision Dice Tower
We set out to bring the magic of physical dice back into online play — without losing the convenience of virtual tabletops.
The Vision Dice Tower is a physical dice tower that reads your real dice rolls and syncs them with online play.
What Using the Tower Looks Like
Step 1 — Choose an action
The Vision Dice Tower plugin appears when you hover over a roll in D&D Beyond.
Step 2 — Click the plugin
You’re prompted to roll physical dice into the tower.
Step 3 — Roll your dice
The software reads your dice through the tower’s camera and sensors, identifying the die type and result.
Step 4 — Result sent to the VTT
The final roll is sent to Roll20 (currently in beta) and logged just like a digital roll.
Inside the tower, we’ve built a compact system that includes:
- a custom camera module
- precision sensors to detect real rolls
- an onboard mini CPU
- and computer-vision software trained to read a wide variety of dice
When you roll:
- The tower detects the roll
- Captures the landing face
- Identifies the die type
- Reads the number
- Sends the result to our app and supported VTTs (currently Roll20 in beta)
Rolls are currently processed in seconds, and we are actively optimizing speed and accuracy.
Right now, most rolls process in about 6–12 seconds, with some testing rolls landing as fast as 4–5 seconds. That’s already about half the time of our early prototypes, and we are continuing to optimize speed and accuracy throughout development.
The Vision Dice Tower brings physical dice into digital play without sacrificing fairness, speed, or immersion.
Software Access & Subscription
The Vision Dice Tower relies on cloud-based processing to identify dice and read results. That computing power has ongoing costs, which is why the tower requires a subscription.
The subscription supports the cloud processing required to accurately read dice and keep improving accuracy, speed, and compatibility with more VTTs.
We are committed to keeping pricing fair and accessible, with multiple options available at launch.
We are actively exploring whether we can provide a limited free tier in the future.
Make 100: Collector's Edition
To celebrate Kickstarter’s annual Make 100 initiative, we are offering a limited run of 100 Kickstarter-Exclusive special-edition towers printed in GOLD.
Each will be produced in an exclusive color and individually numbered from 1 to 100.
Once these are gone, they will never be made again.
Who We Are
We’re a small team behind Order of the Dice — gamers, storytellers, engineers, creators, and lifelong tabletop fans committed to making online play feel like tabletop again.

Designing the tower hardware, building the software, and training the detection software.
Caleb — Marketing & User Experience
Shaping communication, testing flows, refining the app experience, building the Kickstarter foundation.
Scott — Project Lead & Vision Coordinator
Testing prototypes, coordinating external engineering, keeping the project aligned and moving toward reality.
We aren’t outsiders creating a product for a community we don’t understand. We are the community.
We’re building the tool we’ve always wanted.
Where We Are Today
We’ve already built:
- a functional working prototype
- trained dice-reading software
- real roll detection hardware
- Roll20 integration (in beta)
- an internal testing environment
We’re now refining and improving:
- physical tower design
- Software accuracy
- app polish
- expanded support for more VTTs beyond Roll20
We’re close — but we need your help to take it across the finish line. Our goal is to finalize orders and begin fulfilling them in Q4 of 2026.
What Your Support Will Help Build
Your pledge will fund:
- our first manufacturing run
- transition from 3D-printed prototypes to injection-molded production
- expanded software training
- further app development
- integration with more VTT platforms
- packaging, logistics, and fulfillment
- extended product testing and quality assurance
This isn’t just backing a product. It’s helping shape the future of hybrid tabletop gaming.
