Paperback Adventures is a Deckbuilding Roguelike Word game. You build you deck of letters along with items to survive 6 challenging fights against a menagerie of enemies. Each game is unique - you'll have to adapt to survive in this crunchy, rewarding adventure! Click here to learn more about the game A few years ago Paperback Adventures received high praise from players and reviewers alike. Now we want to reprint the original game and add a ton of new content that we've been carefully constructing behind the scenes. Play as the martial artist, Iron Knee. Expand your game with The Binding Nexus. Store in style with The Big Box. And that's just some of what we're bringing to the tabletop with this campaign.
Here are what some of the biggest names in board games had to say about the original game:
Why Back Now?
This is the last chance to get the game and Big Box lowest price. Some of these items will be a limited print run, so they will run out. While we have released many games over the years, we remain a small publisher and your crowdfunding helps us manufacture and finish this game. We love crowdfunding and love how it allows us to find our audience and work with our players to create a great game.
New Character Box: Iron Knee
Like the other character boxes, Iron Knee will include a custom color tray, tokens, 60 unique letter cards, as well as a selection of martial arts-themed enemies, items and McGuffins that you get to mix into any game of Paperback Adventures.
And those are just two of the mechanical twists Iron Knee brings to the table. She also has Juice cards that let her spend energy to power up letter cards (instead of the usual items) as well as cards that can Echo back to the top of the deck after use, as long as she is willing to spend Boons to do it.
New Multiplayer Box: The Binding Nexus
We are proud of Paperback Adventures' focus on solo play from the start of its design, but we also know that some people want to enjoy the game's word building and wild combos with their friends. While the original game does have simple rules for some cooperative play with 2 players, we wanted to take the time to design a multiplayer experience that made the game new and fun in different ways, without sacrificing the core of what makes Paperback Adventures, well...Paperback Adventures. To make this possible, included are 3 enemy trays and tokens.
And don't worry. You can still battle the enemies in the Core Box and Character boxes, thanks to the new rules–all your previous content still expands the pool of cards you play with in multiplayer. Whether you are battling enemies made for multiplayer or not, you will need to take one important step at the start of every turn, before you even draw cards: choose a specific enemy to confront that turn. And this step comes with one important rule: you can't choose the same enemy you confronted last turn. This means that the start of every turn requires some coordination as a group.
The Big Box
The modular aspect of Paperback Adventures allows for a lot of flexibility, but we know that a lot of players want it all. And carrying around that many boxes gets unruly. What if you had a box that fit all the other boxes inside it? An organized box. A Big Box.
- The included tuckboxes allow quick setup and save. Just pull out the boxes you need.
- Character tuckbox has all your starting cards and library of letter cards. They include tabs for quick lookup.
- Items and McGuffin tuckboxes allow you to just them leave shuffled in the box, and can even last across multiple games for more variety!
- The Enemy Index allows you to quickly find your next enemy card.
- The injection molded trays are much heftier and designed to replace the original vacuum trays. They stay in place during play.
- The trays have built in storage for your metal tokens.
Other New Additions
We are thankful for the Paperback Adventures fans who have been playing for years now and enjoying the game. One frequent wish we have heard is for some more variance in the starting decks. When you play the same character several times in a row, some of the word building can start to feel stale. As we worked on fixing that problem, a more comprehensive and exciting solution emerged: our character Retcon packs!
The Retcon pack provides a re-imagined theme for that character: for example the classic fantasy rogue Damsel becomes a clockwork-run steampunk assassin. The new theme comes with 5 new cards for the starting deck, new starting items and core cards, and updated mechanics for the keywords for that character. So these packs have a small component count, but contain a huge refresh for the character.
We also have plans for another frequent fan wish: a way to keep playing a run even after beating the Book 3 boss. In the updated rulebook, we will include rules for an Extended Series variant that lets you keep continuing play indefinitely—you can keep improving your card synergies, but the difficulty will keep ramping up as well. If we hit our stretch goals, we plan to include Book 4 Bosses in the Iron Knee and Binding Nexus boxes: overpowered enemies to cap off an Extended Series, if you dare...
More about Paperback Adventures
Did you miss out on the first volume of Paperback Adventures? We'll share how the game works in this section.
Here's a great detailed overview from Liz at Beyond Solitaire:
One of the main features of Paperback Adventures is the word puzzle it provides. But it's a puzzle about finding the right word, not the longest or most obscure word. That's in large part due to the splay system.
Whenever you choose a word for the turn, you must also choose to splay your cards to the left or the right. That will greatly change the outcome of your turn.
Defeat 6 enemies in a row to win the game. Each enemy is quite unique and will need a different strategy to take it down.
