What is PUBLIC ACCESS?

What is Public Access?
Hardcover of Public Access laying flat on green formica

Public Access is a tabletop roleplaying game that takes players through the strange and uncanny valley of Deep Lake, New Mexico. Players take on the roles of curious young adults who revisit their rural hometown, and who are thrust into a series of increasingly weird and dangerous mysteries as they search for answers to an urban legend from their childhood: what happened to TV Odyssey?

Road sign welcoming players to the town of Deep Lake, New Mexico
Welcome to Deep Lake, New Mexico. "The Sainted City".

From the makers of the cozy-yet-suspenseful hit mystery game, Brindlewood Bay, Public Access promises a journey through a nostalgia-soaked world filled with eccentric characters, eerie settings, and downright terrifying dangers. Public Access takes inspiration from analog and found footage horror, as well as 1980s-90s American pop culture, creepypastas & other internet folklore. Using the innovative and collaborative mystery system popularized by Brindlewood Bay, players help shape the world of Deep Lake as they explore it, while its Powered by the Apocalypse-inspired mechanics keeps the emphasis on building an exciting narrative.

The Gauntlet is planning to release an official hardcover edition of Public Access with your help, featuring newly refined rules and guidance for play. In addition to the core book, there is also the all-new expansion: Signals from the Other Side, which features even more Mysteries, Odyssey Tapes, as well as Lost Transmissions—mysteries that take place in alternate versions of Deep Lake! Each book will be hardcover with full color interiors, roughly 10x7 inches, and approximately 150 pages

The core Public Access book contains everything you need to play a full campaign. It features 8 original Mysteries (outlined below), 12 Odyssey Tapes, as well as updated rules revised from the game's original launch.

Revised Rules

Public Access features revised and expanded rules from its original 2023 release, including a tightened campaign structure more squarely focused on the core TV Odyssey mystery, greatly expanded Keeper chapters, and increased detail about the setting of Deep Lake, New Mexico.

Carved from Brindlewood

Public Access uses the revolutionary and beloved mystery system of Brindlewood Bay, where even the Keeper doesn't know the solution! Players collect Clues while investigating the many mysteries of Deep Lake, and when they're ready, they have a conversation where they engage in actual deduction in order to figure out what's really going on. No two solutions are ever the same, making for infinite re-playability!

This system also has an emphasis on shared world-building and collaborative storytelling. In Public Access, it's not just the Keeper's job to build the world and tell the story—the players have an equal role in fleshing out the world, doing riveting (and terrifying) flashbacks, and even saying what they're afraid is going to happen should they push too far into the darkness.

In the world of Public Access, even playing a nostalgic video game like XXAAGREUS can unlock the gates of the Underworld.

Mysteries

Shortly after the player characters, called the Deep Lake Latchkeys, arrive to investigate the mystery of TV Odyssey, they get wrapped up in other mysteries in and around the town. It turns out Deep Lake and surrounding Degoya County have a long history of strange, otherworldly happenings, and investigating these mysteries is the core of gameplay in Public Access. These core mysteries are updated from the original release in 2023 with new Countdown mechanics and lightly revised storytelling elements.

The core book comes with the following mysteries:

THE HOUSE ON ESCONDIDO STREET
In 1994, the entire Mendoza family vanished from their home in Deep Lake without a trace. Ten years later, the legend of the house on Escondido Street persists. Discover what happened to the Mendozas before the hungering evil in that house threatens to pull more of Deep Lake’s residents into its ravenous ranch-style abyss.

SLUMBER PARTY SUMMONING CIRCLE
What begins as a carefree adult slumber party turns into a fight for Linnea Rodenbecker’s very soul. After playing the occult-themed board game, The Crying Circle, Linnea has started to show signs of possession. Figuring out what kind of entity has taken over her will be no easy journey—one made all the more strange thanks to the eccentric Rodenbecker family.

THE DEEP LAKE LURKER
Pine Rock Ridge, a children’s sleepaway camp, has recently re-opened after being closed down following the disappearances of several campers in the 90s. Tales of a creature that stalks the lake snatching kids below the surface have been told around countless campfires over the years, except you know the Deep Lake Lurker is real.

XXAAGREUS
The recent discovery of an extremely rare video game cabinet is only the beginning of this descent into the 8-bit underworld of XXAAGREUS. As lines gather around the block of Galaxia Arcade with eager would-be players, a persistent and dangerous threat seeks the game cabinet for themself. They will eliminate anything that comes between them and the secrets hidden within XXAAGREUS’ digital labyrinth.

GREETINGS, TRAVELERS
The Satanic Panic is real and it lives in Deep Lake! A sinister group of wizards called the Black Leaf Circle have been recruiting children for their underground campaign of the controversial roleplaying game, Serpents & Sepulchers. Unfortunately, once they join they never return, and with every disappearance the Circle gets closer and closer to finding their most fitting sacrifice.

STARLIGHT KINGDOM
“The Wonders of Heaven Await! Witness True Miracles! An Out-of-This-World Experience!” These were the promises made by philanthropist and self-appointed spiritual guru, Paul Greco, when he announced his amusement park, Starlight Kingdom. While Greco hoped it would be a bridge between mankind and life from other worlds, the park was abruptly closed before it ever opened, and Greco disappeared. Years after the closure, strange lights have begun flashing over the defunct park, beckoning you to unearth the secrets left behind there.

THE WHISPER
The gruesome murder of an elderly man at the hands of his wife reignites concerns over one of Deep Lake’s most enduring urban legends: the Whisper. Legend has it that a strange voice lives in the walls of an unfinished housing development, quietly revealing the darkest secrets of the town to those unfortunate enough to hear them. Paranoia creeps into the development’s last remaining residents with every new revelation the Whisper lays bare.

THE DREAM
A frozen confection with highly addictive and possibly supernatural properties is all the rage in Degoya County, causing fights to break out at grocery stores as people can’t get enough. The Latchkeys' deeper investigations takes them to the tiny nearby town of Whitespray, where they can pay a visit to La Fresca Foods' enigmatic founder, W. Atlas Morgenstern. You can't spell consumerism without CONSUME!

Odyssey Tapes

While investigating the mysteries of Deep Lake, the Latchkeys will occasionally find hard proof of TV Odyssey: the Odyssey tapes! Each Odyssey tape contains an episode from one of the disturbing TV shows that aired on the lost public access TV channel. A core part of Public Access gameplay is narrating the events of these tapes, gradually revealing the truth of TV Odyssey! Public Access comes with 12 Odyssey tapes:

“Happy Jack 06 Duress Signal? Pure-White Pretext? A basement puppet show and a child in duress.

"Affirmations 04" Self-help with a side of... seepage.

“Neighborly Living 03 Cooking for Your Community Pure-White Extreme” Paula Palmer invites you into her home. Please don't mind the blood stains.

"Visit Starlight Kingdom!" An infomercial for an abandoned theme park. Praise Jesus.

“Astral 09 Pyramid Passage Pure-White Contact” Voyages into the Astral with Lunaria Gomez.

“Sculpt Box Socrates Caller Warning” Let's Sculpt, Box, and Read Socrates! Normal activities for normal human people.

“BLAM! 03 Everybody BLAM!” Are you ready for BLAMARAMA? (The answer is no, you are not ready for BLAMARAMA).

“I Want My Video Beat” Ray-Gun Rosales plays all the hits that don't exist!

“Calamity Raccoon 06 Big Bad - Pure-White Ultimate - Highest Level Warning” [REDACTED]. This is a key to [REDACTED].

“Static Woman Live Interview” Lem Waters interviews a real-life corporeal woman on the streets.

"Animal Kingdom Pure-White" An episode of Poetry Slam—professional wrestling and poetry, together at last!

The TV Odyssey Campaign

TV Odyssey is the campaign structure for the game, and the overarching mystery the Latchkeys will be trying to solve. The structure has been greatly revised in this new edition so that TV Odyssey is central to everything going on in the story.

The new structure includes a pivotal Odyssey Question the players must answer in order to progress to the end of the campaign, with special Odyssey Clues that can only be found by watching the Odyssey tapes, or stumbling on critical connections between the answers to regular mysteries and TV Odyssey.

At a certain point in the campaign, the Latchkeys may have to survive [REDACTED], a single horrifying and intense night in which the [REDACTED]—ravenous creatures summoned from beyond the desert wastes—will [REDACTED].

The campaign concludes with a final scenario: the TV Odyssey Mystery. Unlike in the original 2023 release, in which the Keeper had to write the final mystery themselves, this new edition comes with a pre-written mystery for the conclusion of the campaign (the Keeper simply makes a few small choices in the beginning to tailor the final mystery to the group's story up to that point).

And of course we mustn't forget about [REDACTED], everyone's favorite cryptic narrator. In this edition, the role of [REDACTED] is increased, with scripted vignettes (over 20!) the Keeper performs at the end of each session. But is [REDACTED] a friend to the Latchkeys, or an agent of the mysterious realm known as [REDACTED]? And who is the silver-haired man who is always seen [REDACTED]?

What is SIGNALS FROM THE OTHER SIDE?

What is SIGNALS FROM THE OTHER SIDE?
Hardcover of Signals from the Other Side laying flat on green formica

Signals from the Other Side is an expansion book for Public Access. It has more mysteries (including the new Lost Transmissions mysteries), new Odyssey tapes, and expanded setting material, including a new section for exploring the mysterious [REDACTED].

Two wanderers encounter a large humanoid figure wanders a black desert, their head is a burning sun.
What lurks in the [REDACTED]?

New Mysteries!

Signals from the Other Side introduces seven new mysteries (plus any stretch goal mysteries we unlock), so you have even more bizarre dangers with which to challenge the Latchkeys! Some of these mysteries were available for the previous edition of the game, but have been updated for this new edition to include new Countdown mechanics and lightly revised storytelling elements.

DOG TOLD ME TO
Independence Day weekend is around the corner, and Deep Lake is experiencing a peculiar string of violent activity. None of the perpetrators remember their actions, but all of them saw a cartoonish St. Bernard in a policeman’s uniform. Something is behind these acts of violence—something evil—and it wears the face of Officer Barker.

ON STRANGE WINGS
Every region has its own cryptid. No one really knows what the Deep Lake Devils are, but everyone knows they come from the labyrinthine caverns of Los Ojos de los Muertos. Dubious and whimsical stories aside, livestock around Degoya County are turning up dead and people are afraid. The Latchkeys may learn that even the tallest tales possess a kernel of truth.

THE VOID ANGELS
An impossible storm is gathering over Degoya County. Dark clouds swallow the sun, tongues of lightning lash the earth, and people are vanishing without a trace. Some say this has all happened before. In ages past, the people of this land offered their best crop to the angels beyond the mountains. Now, they have returned—bringing the endless hunger of the Void.

PALE HORSE
A fast and furious sequel to Slumber Party Summoning Circle. The ghost of Deep Lake’s top street racer needs the Latchkeys' help to escape the fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse, who’s hunting her down in a gray Mustang Boss 429. Start your engines, and get ready to drive for your life!

WELCOME TO RADIOLOT
After several days of power outages at the house on Rodenbecker Street, the Latchkeys are visited by a man seeking help finding his husband. He recalls RadioLot, a cutting-edge electronics store that was only open for three months before its entire staff disappeared. While the store stands abandoned and neglected, a malevolent force stirs behind the padlocked doors, waiting and hungry.

THE LAST PHONEBOOTH
The Latchkeys receive a phone call with a chilling message: the world will end in three days. Is the messenger warning them of a terrible future to come, or is this a promise the caller intends to fulfill?

CUT TO: CHRISTMAS
A festive Odyssey Tape unlocks this surreal mystery. The Latchkeys are sucked into an alternate dimension—one absolutely bursting with relentless holiday cheer. Will they be able to fill their quota of tropes to make it home? Or will they be forced to escape by more dangerous methods?

Lost Transmissions!

Signals from the Other Side introduces a new type of mystery: Lost Transmissions! Lost Transmissions are mysteries that explore the weird history of Degoya County. TV Odyssey and the mysteries of Summer 2004 aren't the only unusual things that have happened in the area—something about Degoya County has made it a magnet for cultists, cosmic entities, and creatures beyond description, going back thousands of years. Lost Transmissions are side stories that allow you to expand your campaign of Public Access with mysteries and stories that explore horror subgenres beyond analog and found footage.

Perhaps most interesting: the players still play their Latchkeys! Lost Transmissions are triggered during the TV Odyssey campaign—perhaps by speaking to a certain Side Character, listening to a certain cassette tape or radio broadcast, or even making a recipe from a certain well-used cookbook. Once the Lost Transmission is triggered, the TV Odyssey story pauses and players play alternate timeline/dimension versions of their Latchkeys in order to solve this new side mystery.

Signals from the Other Side comes with three Lost Transmissions (and any we unlock as stretch goals during the campaign):

THE GREAT DEGOYA COUNTY CHILI COOK-OFF
It’s the Summer of ‘87, and you’re the Road Trippers, a group of recent college grads in search of adventure across America. First stop: La Fresca, New Mexico, and the Great Degoya County Chili Cook-Off. Enjoy cold beer, complimentary chili, and a gore-soaked fight for survival against the cannibal worshipers of She-Who-Feeds!

THE GHOST BRO MYSTERY SHOW
Step in front of the camera as you take on the roles of the Ghost Bros, a team of paranormal investigators as they film the premiere episode of their reality television show in Degoya County. Explore the derelict La Fresca Train Station, uncover its spectral secrets, and take a trip to the Land of the Dead.

CONVERGENCE
In 2004, you arrive in Degoya County not as Latchkeys, but as a disgraced Celebrity and their Entourage looking to escape the scrutiny of the public eye for an ultra-exclusive getaway in the desert. Enter: Converge, a health and wellness retreat for the elite. Rest, relaxation, and re-calibration await—unless the bloodthirsty cult operating at the retreat gets to one of you first.

New Odyssey Tapes!

Home invasion makeovers, aggressive anti-crime PSAs, amateur paranormal enthusiasts, headbanging horrors, and Clint Yeastwood— these tapes have it all! A collection that gives players more opportunities to scare their fellow Latchkeys, and provides the Keeper with new [REDACTED] for the Night of the [REDACTED]!

Signals from the Other Side includes fourteen new Odyssey tapes (plus any unlocked as stretch goals during the campaign):

  • "Officer Barker Teaches You a Lesson"
  • "Ghost Gals 03 Blackrock Pure-White Labyrinth"
  • "Dwayne's World"
  • "Guerilla Makeover 012 Pure-White Pretext"

  • “Fireside 01”
  • “Bobby G. Heaven’s Glide-N-Ride”
  • “Gone to Fur”
  • “Lucky Lots 013 Ted’s Storage Adventure”
A pair of skeletons, distorted

Voyages into the [REDACTED]

Signals from the Other Side includes an extensive exploration of the [REDACTED] called Voyages into the [REDACTED]. It includes four frameworks you can use whenever a player marks [REDACTED] on their character sheet, breaking apart the very nature of [REDACTED] and sending their Latchkey into the [REDACTED]. Each framework has Dangers, Side Characters, Locations, Moments, and even a special Question the Latchkey can answer while they are in [REDACTED], and which could have major ramifications for the TV Odyssey campaign, Brindlewood Bay, The Between, and [REDACTED]. In the latter case, you will want to ensure you have performed [REDACTED] using all the appropriate rites and protocols.

Unlocked: Public Access: Archive 2014

A new game for use with the Odyssey tape cards! Public Access: Archive 2014!

In 1990, Special Agent X. Rybitski of PRISM disappeared while on assignment in New Mexico. Agent Rybitski’s three-year investigation into the paranatural anomalies originating from a small corner of the state became the basis of PRISM’s Degoya-Class reality cohesion cascade designation, so-named because of the centrality of tiny Degoya County in the New Mexico-based anomalies. Agent Rybitski was never located, but now, in the present day of 2003, a group of PRISM agents is reviving the cold case of his disappearance. They’ve gained special permission to access Archive 2014 (two-zero-one-four), PRISM’s collection of so-called “Odyssey tapes,” episodes of programs that aired on Degoya County’s public access TV channel, TV Odyssey, all traces of which—like Agent Rybitski—disappeared in the early 1990s. By examining the tapes, the agents hope to construct a “definitive” report of what happened to Rybitski for Red, Orange, and Yellow—the three administrative heads of PRISM (collectively, and affectionately, called “Uncle ROY” by lower-level agents). What Uncle ROY doesn’t know is that each agent has their own agenda—one that possibly has nothing to do with Agent Rybitski at all—and will manipulate both the report and the supporting Odyssey tape footage in order to achieve it.

If we unlock this stretch goal, we will develop Public Access: Archive 2014, a short GM-less storytelling game for use with the Odyssey tape cards! In this game, players take on the role of PRISM agents watching a selection of Odyssey tapes in order to determine what happened to a missing agent. Each agent has a hidden Agenda and a Specialty. Their Agenda is something they’re trying to accomplish within the Byzantine bureaucracy of PRISM. Perhaps they’re a long-time advocate for the existence of an anomalous entity the rest of PRISM rejects, and they hope to use the Odyssey tapes to prove the existence of it. Maybe they were the lead agent on a case that went terribly wrong, and they’re using this opportunity to restore their reputation (and maybe ever-so-slightly alter perceptions of what actually happened on that old case). Perhaps Agent Rybitski didn’t actually vanish but was murdered by the investigating agent, and they’re using this exercise to cover their tracks!

Gameplay involves narrating the Odyssey tape cards and gathering Clues to help “solve” the mystery of Agent Rybitski’s disappearance. Throughout, agents will use their Specialties to manipulate the footage—inserting the existence of certain characters or entities, changing what another player just narrated, shuffling the order of tapes watched (or even replacing them with new tapes), and more—in order to construct a report that is favorable to their hidden Agenda.  This will be a digital download stretch goal for use with the Odyssey tape cards.

Final Stretch Goal - Anchor: Deep Interior Unit

Anchor: Deep Interior Unit is our final stretch goal, set for $650K. It's a brand-new game—inspired by Severance, The Backrooms, and Control—that takes place in the same world as Public Access, and while the two games aren't directly connected, they work the same mechanically, and have enough deep lore connections to where I think you'll eventually want to play A:DIU after you play PA. If we unlock this stretch goal, the plan will be to spend the next few months developing the game, with a playable draft ready by the end of the year, and a final, laid-out version available in PDF by mid to late next year. This stretch goal will be a digital download, available to everyone at the $20 and higher pledge tiers.

For more information, including details of the setting, gameplay, and planned mysteries, please see this update.

"The most unsettling horror game I've ever played" - Quinns, Quinns Quest

"Public Access, and other Carved from Brindlewood games, have completely changed the way I experience tabletop role-playing games forever. There is truly nothing in this industry that comes close. The community it has fostered is full of the most talented and creative people I have ever met. Anyway, play this game. You won't regret it." - Majik

"Public Access showed me how to play a horror TTRPG that is entertaining and compelling, by giving the players agency, by allowing it to be personal and tailored to the characters. I've never been in New Mexico, but I felt Degoya County." - Nicholas Ronvel

"Public Access hit me like a muscle car powered by a demon from hell. It perfectly blends cinematic play with horror found amongst the pages of a Stephen King novel or on a drive thru theater screen, culminating in a perfect campaign for roleplayers of all experience levels. Not only has it inspired my game mastering style, but it has pushed me to be a better game designer." - Wes Franks

"I have never played a game that made want to sit down and write more than Public Access. The strange, horrifying, and often times campy world of Degoya County has such ripe potential for the darkest and weirdest ideas you can manage. Where else can you wax nostalgic about Beanie Babies and Pogs while coping with the trauma of being stalked by a murderer dressed as a minotaur?" - J Evan Park

"Public Access has changed how I approach horror in TTRPGs. The intimacy of nostalgia and its corruption of a 'better time' rings true in every sentence. The past haunts us, it stalks us, it echoes in our mind until one thing remains true: The past was NEVER what you thought it was and its innocence was a lie. The game is perfect for roleplayers from all backgrounds and experience, and wonderful for those that enjoy cosmic horror in their games." - Irving Benitez (jellyfishlines)"

"Public Access got under my skin like no other game. If I’m honest, I think it’s still there." - Matt Risby

"Public Access has been one of the best experiencing I've had GMing a game ever. Because I'm not on the hook to know everything about the mystery as a GM, I can focus on roleplaying NPCs, creating weird and creepy environments, and fully inhabiting the world of Deep Lake, New Mexico. I can give out clues without needing to worry about how they fit together, and I can join my players in speculating on what the answer to the mystery is. Lots of games promise to make the game fun and easy to run for the GM, but Public Access is one of the few I've played that delivers on that promise." - Clarissa Powelson

"The more I play Public Access, the more I want to play Public Access. This game gets under your skin in the best ways, both because of the incredible stories it leads you to tell and the elegance of the mechanics that enable the experience. It's so easy to run that sometimes it feels like cheating, and has changed how I approach other rpgs. I wish I was playing it right now." - Rachael Jamison

"What takes you back? New Kids on the Block? Blowing on the Nintendo cartridge? What about the horrifying local public access television station nobody else seems to remember? This game will stick in your brain like the best kind of creepy pasta, and you will have an absolute blast the whole time." - Amanda Mullins

“Public Access is a desert fever dream of distant nostalgia and pure horror, a quintessential [Carved from Brindlewood] experience for system newbies and veterans alike.” - Vyn Vox

"Public Access plays in the space between the familiar and unfamiliar with the horror that lives there - strangers living together to chase the mystery of a childhood home they left long ago and drenched in a nostalgia for a time not quite as they remember it. Good luck. Have fun. Don’t Die. (or do)" - Arthur Wells, game designer and AP performer

"Public Access has a perfect mix of creepy vibes and nostalgia. Watching the tapes is such a cool experience." - Paul Vincent, Table Cat Games

"I've been playing RPGs for 30+ years. I have a few truly memorable RPG experiences that will stay with me, the sort you and your players will talk about for years. Public Access is now one of them." - DTH

"Public Access is a perfect blend of horror, mystery and nostalgia. It’s also one of the easiest games in terms of prepping and running—all the information you need to run one of the Mysteries fits on a couple of sheets of paper. The 12-session campaign that we played is one of my all-time favorites." - Eugene Mokeiev, TTRPG game designer
