—description de l’éditeur

Présentation de la campagne

The Republic of Rome Remastered is a game of negotiation, power and betrayal that simulates the 250 years of history between the First Punic War (264 B.C.) and the Civil War that followed the assassination of Julius Caesar (44 B.C.)

Each player will lead a political faction which includes senators from the most prominent families in the Republic. Players will compete against each other for government positions, economic concessions, control of the armies, and to attract new members to their faction, all with the ultimate goal of becoming the dominant political faction in Rome. Players will not only have to contend with each other, but also with the game itself, as Rome will be in constant danger. All players will lose the game if wars are not properly managed, if discontent turns into popular revolt, or if the Republic goes bankrupt. At the same time, players will have to cooperate closely to push through laws to manage internal politics and preserve social peace, declare wars to expand the borders of the Republic, or confront enemies who seek to destroy Rome. They will also have to compromise to attend to the recreational and religious needs of the people, purge the corrupt from office, and much, much more.

Thus, in order to win the game, players will need to balance service to Rome with personal gain. Usually, the faction with the most total influence will win the game, if Rome prevails. However, if a single senator stands out individually, he may aspire to become Dictator for life and achieve victory for his faction. The most dramatic and difficult path to victory is to revolt against the senate to seize power by force of arms.

This is a preview of the campaign. All material shown is Work in Progress. Over the next few months we will be posting updates on the project. Stay tuned!

This is an all-new edition that builds on the original and adds many new features that will make The Republic of Rome a fresh experience both for old and new players. These are the most relevant new features in The Republic of Rome Remastered:

  • All the typos and inconsistencies in the previous edition have been corrected, and some rules that slowed down or overcomplicated gameplay have been streamlined.
In addition, we are working hard to eliminate all exceptions to the rules, no matter how small. For example, the situation with ID-sharing senators. Even being true to what happened historically it did not make sense to keep this rule. Why stall a game to check what happens in case both are in play and a death token with their ID appears?

  • The game’s graphic design has been entirely reworked, including new illustrations for all the game components.
We are taking great care to adapt the look and feel of the game to modern times, while preserving the historical background and illustrating each card as faithfully as possible according to historical sources (although we will obviously take some licenses). We are also completely modifying the graphic design, to make the components more attractive and stylish and to enhance the gaming experience.

  • For the first time, miniature busts are included to represent the main political offices in the game, while the option of using tokens is maintained for those who prefer them.
We think they will look really impressive and are very useful, although we are also considering other options. Throughout the pre-campaign and during the following months, we will want to know what you think.
  • The board has been fully redesigned to reduce the demand for table space, and all tables will be moved to a Play Aid for the Herald of the senate.
The board will be modified to make it really useful to the players: the wars and the forum will be in view but what is the point of filling the game space with boards that most players won't even be able to read because they are oriented backwards from where they are sitting? We will create improved help sheets that collect this information and introduce the figure of the Herald, a player who will have all the relevant information compressed into a convenient and practical help sheet format. It is desirable that this player is the one who has the most experience with the game, so that he/she can direct the game, check results and rules, etc.

  • New Event cards have been added and some of the existing ones have been modified. Additionally, a new Fate deck has been introduced to help balance Event results.
This will make the games even more varied and fun, and will reduce exceptions to the rules and unnecessary complexities of some event cards. The destiny deck will be another great addition, and will give players more possibilities to unleash their Machiavellian plans.

  • The influence of games and religious affairs in the Republic has been emphasized.
We miss a greater presence of religious and festive aspects in the game, and we are working on different ways to add a greater prominence of both in the game.

  • The rules have been completely rewritten and numerous examples have been added to facilitate learning and playing the game. In addition, a Playbook has been included with extended examples of play.
The rules are too dense and the presence of examples is very limited. We want to add many more examples to make it easier for new players to learn the game and also reorganize the entire rules structure to make it easier to locate the rules during the game.

  • A set of new optional rules has been developed to mitigate the influence of luck during the game.
We know that the community of players has made important contributions to the game since the last edition, and we would like to add an additional manual keeping the classic rules.

We are also working on a new solitaire mode to streamline solo gameplay and on the introduction of improved bots for 2- and 3-player games. All this and much more awaits you in The Republic of Rome Remastered!
