Thanks so much for checking out my Tokens & Playmat Kickstarter campaign!
I've been an illustrator for Magic: The Gathering since almost the very beginning. My first set was Legends back in 1994. Flash forward 30 years later and I'm still at it, working on some of the coolest designs I've ever had the pleasure of creating. Here are the cards I've done for MTG.
This campaign is a world-building deep dive into the Treasures of Xellan Rah, the continuation of my graphic novel The Lost Book of Kings.
The extended, 200-page graphic novel is in production now; I'm getting very, very close to the final phases of development. Expect the book coming soon! Your pledge will help fund the continuation of this effort!
And, in the meantime, we're debuting the art and characters of Xellen Rah through a sweeping, hand-designed set of custom tokens, playmats, and prints. The designs are lush and gorgeous and lend themselves beautifully to playmats — and cardboard:
And that's not all! I'm also sprinkling in some best-of-the-best pieces from my storied Art Vault to round out the deck just right!
Of course, there's Magic. Lot's of my classic MTG art like Price of Progress (below) in the form of playmats and prints. With your support, we can all vote a bunch of my classic designs into production! 🥳
This is my first-ever set of tokens! And these tokens represent years of work — some never-before-seen art that introduces you to the Treasures of Xellan Rah, immersing you in the lore and characters that make up this fantastical realm filled with dragons, fairies, goblins, kings, warrior kings, demi-Gods and, of course, Gods and Goddesses!
The project is launching with 30 tokens! With your support, we can unlock and include even more gorgeous card art, all of which will be automatically added to the sets.
All tokens will be printed on high-quality 300 gsm blue core card stock and packaged in a custom, extremely sturdy, two-part rigid box. After sampling multiple paper weights, finishes, and suppliers, we are really proud of the quality of these tokens.
Every token unlocked through the project will also be available with the added foil layer. This means that each token will have parts that are shinier and catch the light, customized to that card. We have no doubt they're gonna be gorgeous!
As new Tokens are unlocked via Stretch Goals, they will be added to the images above. And tucked into the final Token boxes.
What sets these playmats apart? It's about the art — the MTG art, the legacy art, the personal art. Besides the stunning fantasmagoria of paintings that introduces you to the world of Xellan Rah, we're also offering some of my classic MTG designs as playmats.
All of the art is lush and displayed in full-bleed format across our premium playmats. They're standard sized at 24 x 14 inches (61.0 cm x 35.6 cm). And we're opting for a thicker, substantial playmat at 1/8 inches thick, with a stitched edge, so that these beauties will last a lifetime.
What else makes our playmats so special? Three things:
- Never-Before-Seen Extended Art - The fully-painted art I've rendered for the graphic novel is sized with a comic readability in mind. At the same time, much of my MTG work doesn't fit the parameters of a playmat. So I've extended most of the artwork — some by hand, some digitally. I've had a blast working closely with our graphic designer Jessica on this.
- Rare and Extremely Limited Edition - This is your only opportunity to get this version of these extensions on a stitched edge playmat. I will never print these specific playmat designs again once this campaign closes. That’s it.
- Signed - Every playmat is signed meticulously and lovingly.
We're launching with 5 playmats. With your support we'll unlock even more playmat designs, all lushly painted.
All of playmat art that you see above is also available as a print! These extended artwork prints are sized at a luxurious 14 x 24 inches (35.56 x 60.96 cm) with a 1" border around the artwork and printed on archival-quality Giclee paper.
We'll work the same phenomenal printer out of New York that we worked with during our first Kickstarter campaign. We've heard he's the same printer that handles printing for a certain ultimate fantasy artist's estate; we're in good company! These prints are, simply put, stunning. They are also:
- Rare and Extremely Limited Edition - We will not create these prints ever again, beyond this Kickstarter campaign. Get 'em while you can.
- Fully Extended Artwork - These gorgeous prints feature the fully extended artwork available only in this kickstarter campaign.
- Archival Quality - Prints are on 14 x 24 archival watercolor Giclee paper. We chose to go with Giclee prints since they have an extremely high level of quality, longevity, and value.
Signed and Numbered. Every print is signed and numbered, meticulously and lovingly, with my full signature.
If you don’t see your favorite RKF designs, no worries! We have a slew of card art waiting in the wings should we reach some of the Stretch Goals we have in mind.
As we meet Stretch Goals, Backers will be able to vote for additional designs and nominate new ones (some never-before-seen art)!
Which means: We'd love for you to be an active part of this campaign! Vote on the designs you want to see turned into tokens, playmats and prints, win some great giveaways, and just have blast!
Can’t find the exact mix of items to meet your needs? No worries!
All you have to do is increase your pledge by the appropriate amount and once the project is finished, you will be able to select your Add Ons in your Backer Survey. Add Ons include:
Are you a retailer or wholesaler interested in carrying the extremely limited edition Richard Kane Ferguson's Kickstarter Tokens, playmats or prints in your store? Fantastic! We're happy to work with you.
Instead of creating a Retailer Pledge, and losing a cut to Kickstarter and Backerkit, we're handling wholesale & retail orders directly and passing the savings on to you.
Please fill out THIS FORM and we'll get back to you toward the end of the campaign with pricing and a catalog from the campaign. Thank you!
Shipping is paid after the project has ended, when Backer Surveys are sent out. Actual shipping charges will depend on the contents of your order.
Shipping cost will be based on the combined weight of all Rewards and Add-Ons plus packing materials. With unpredictable tariffs and seemingly ever-increasing shipping costs, both domestically and internationally, we're managing fulfillment with the aim of reducing shipping costs for backers as much as possible. Particularly with international shipping, we're working with a shipping platform that may slightly increase timelines, but at a substantially reduced rate.
Backers outside of the US are responsible for their own duties and fees.
Your shipping cost will be calculated and charged when you complete your Backer Survey.
Richard Kane Ferguson is an internationally renowned fantasy artist, comic artist and illustrator who has worked extensively in the gaming industry since the 1990s. He’s been painting and designing for Magic: The Gathering almost since its beginning, working on its earliest sets right up to the present day.
RKF has lent his distinctive visual style to a host of iconic cards from Dakkon Blackblade to Force of Will. And he’s probably at his creative happiest when chained to his drawing board and cranking on a red hot MTG deadline. RKF has worked with many other gaming and comic companies, including White Wolf Games and Marvel Comics. He’s published numerous comics of his own creation.
Jessica is a freelance graphic designer with a love for all things creative! She has been working with R. Kane Productions since the inception of this Kickstarter (in other words, a long time). Using her excellent design sense, Jessica creates the original art extension templates for RKF. She also does all things graphics for R. Kane Productions.
Jessica has been a member of the Magic community since she learned to play in 2009. "It has been a huge gift to get to be involved with a Magic project," she says. In her free time, Jessica enjoys all things crafty, reading, gardening, board games, the occasional video game, and going on hikes with her husband and partner in crime. You can see Jessica's design style and portfolio here: https://jessica-phillips.wixsite.com/graphic-design.
Renee is the CEO and co-head grunt at R. Kane Productions, handling everything from web design and events to customer service and marketing. She spent most of her career as a journalist, analyst, and researcher covering tech with Ziff Davis, MIT, Deloitte and a couple of swanky software startups. Most recently Renee conducted investor research on tech companies for private equity and institutional investor types.
In 2023 Renee kicked corporate life to the curb to work with her husband, Richard Kane Ferguson, to build out R. Kane Productions. She loves working with Rich and the MTG community and couldn't be happier with the transition.
