Ringyō (林業) is a strategic worker placement game where sustainable forestry is the key to victory. As a daimyō during Japan's Edo period, you're tasked with transforming an untamed wilderness into a thriving province. Command samurai skilled in forestry to cultivate your forests, harvest valuable timber, and carefully develop your province while competing against rival daimyō whose ambitions are just as great as your own.
Every decision matters. Through simultaneous worker placement, environmental management, and long-term planning, you'll need to balance prosperity with sustainability as you adapt to an ever-changing landscape.
Will you find the balance between prosperity and sustainability to earn the Shōgun's favor?
Whichever edition you choose, we want your Ringyō experience to begin the moment you back the campaign. That's why we've included a collection of free extras that add value both inside and outside the box.
*Please note: The Standard Samurai pledge is the only pledge that does not include the Community designed deluxe component. We wanted to keep the entry-level pledge as simple as possible, rather than adding an unwanted component. Backers of the Samurai pledge will be able to include this item separately as an optional add-on should they wish to.
Whether you're picking up the standard copy or going for the Shogun pledge with all the add-ons, we've designed our pledge levels to offer great value for every backer.
The more you pledge, the greater your savings. As a Kickstarter backer, you'll secure Ringyō at our lowest available prices, with substantial discounts compared to the future retail MSRP. It's our way of thanking you for helping bring the game to life.
Want to know more? Head down to ‘What’s in the Box’ & the ‘Add-Ons' sections for a detailed look at the deluxe contents.
Finding the balance between the demands of the natural environment, your province’s needs, and the Shōgun’s demands in Edo is the key to success in Ringyō.

Interested in solo? Did you know it is available to play on Board Game Arena right now? Be sure to watch some of the playthroughs below and read those rules here Note: the design and layout for the solo rules are yet to be finalized.
While Tabletop Simulator does cost money to buy (via Steam), it is a great option for those who prefer to play games with their computer and mouse, in a 3D environment. This version of Ringyo supports 2-4 players.
BGA players might like to try a game on Board Game Arena, where we are featuring the solo mode on this platform for a limited time (note: it is in Beta testing). This will be removed after the campaign and we will be releasing the full game (at all player counts) on BGA in 2027.
Ringyō features an excellent solo mode designed by Paverson Games' developer Richard Woods. Richard has also designed Distilled: Cask Strength and co-designed Distilled Cocktails, as well as co-designed the solo mode for Luthier.
In Ringyō's solo mode, the Shōgun's Demands are arranged around the star-shaped solo board, while a deck of Solo Goals sits at its center, creating a fresh puzzle to solve every time you play.
Across five rounds, you'll need to carefully balance the Shōgun's Demands with your evolving goals, finding the most efficient path to complete as many objectives as possible. Every demand left unmet increases the score you must achieve to succeed, making each decision a delicate trade-off. Choose wisely—or risk falling short of the Shōgun's expectations.
BGA supports solo play (It's currently in Beta) if you would like to ‘take a stroll in the forest’
Don’t miss Richard & Libby LIVE on Sunday 19th July for a Q&A and playthrough of the solo mode (see more events in the Campaign calendar below)
Want Ringyo even sooner? Consider the limited edition EMPEROR Pledge, which comes with everything from the Shogun pledge, plus delivery of a prototype used for playtesting and previews immediately following the Kickstarter! This prototype will be signed by Charlie McCarron, the game's designer. Additionally, your name will be included in the rulebook as an honorary producer. Shipping for the prototype will be covered as well, up to $50.
Although we will not have any stretch goals during the campaign there are some extras that you might typically see in this section that we have already included from the start of the campaign, no matter the funding value!
Unfortunately, we are unable to ship to the following countries: Afghanistan, Belarus, Brazil, Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Russia, Syria and Ukraine. If you live in one of these countries, we suggest using a parcel forwarding service.
Friendly Local Game Stores are what keeps our industry alive and we want to support those efforts through inviting you to participate as a retailer in our campaign! The Merchant Pledge acts as a deposit that will be credited towards your eventual order.
This is our special pledge for our retailers, featuring the Ringyō Standard edition. We will also be offering limited access to the deluxe edition and the Sakana Mini Expansion Both are exclusive to retailers during the crowdfunding campaign, after which they will not be available for retail orders.
You'll also have the opportunity to order other Paverson Games titles and expansions, as well as promo packs for our other games. Back at the $5 Merchant Pledge Level, and we’ll be in touch with you about pricing and shipping costs and then taking orders from verified traders after the Kickstarter campaign.
Retailers: Please fill out this survey to get a head start on the Retailer Pledge Registration Process.
We want the Ringyō campaign to be an experience, not just a pledge page. Over the coming weeks we'll be bringing you live playthroughs, interviews with the game's designer and artist, community Q&As, design insights, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content. Mark your calendar and join us as we celebrate the journey together.
A game about responsible forestry should be produced responsibly too. Sustainability isn't simply the theme of Ringyō—it's a commitment we've made throughout its production.
For every copy of Ringyō sold—not just those from this Kickstarter—we will fund the planting of a tree through Trees for the Future. This is a long-term commitment that will continue beyond the campaign, helping to restore landscapes and support communities through sustainable reforestation.
Responsibly Sourced Materials
All cardboard and wooden components in Ringyō are manufactured using FSC®-certified materials, ensuring they come from responsibly managed forests that meet recognised environmental and social standards.
Innovative Eco-Composite Trees
Rather than using conventional plastic, the game's 300 tree pieces are produced from an eco-composite made using recycled wood dust, giving new life to a manufacturing by-product while creating durable, tactile components that perfectly suit the game's theme.
Designed to Last
Board games are meant to be enjoyed for years, not discarded after a few plays. Ringyō has been designed with longevity in mind, using high-quality components that will stand up to countless sessions around the table. Where possible, the game's materials have also been chosen with recyclability in mind, helping to minimise its environmental impact at the end of its life.
While no manufactured product is without an environmental footprint, we're committed to making Ringyō as responsibly as we can—because a game that celebrates sustainable forestry should strive to support it in the real world as well.
At Paverson Games, we believe a game's theme deserves the same level of care and attention as its mechanics. That's why, for Ringyō, we worked with cultural consultant James Mendez Hodes to help ensure the game presents Edo-period Japan with respect, thoughtfulness, and historical awareness.
Mendez reviewed the game's setting, terminology, artwork, and cultural themes, providing invaluable guidance throughout development. His expertise has helped us create an experience that is both engaging and mindful of the history and traditions that inspired it.
Ringyō draws inspiration from forestry, resource management, and provincial governance during Japan's Edo period. While the game is not intended to be a historical simulation, it is grounded in real practices, locations, and cultural influences from the era. Where gameplay and historical authenticity have come into conflict, we have carefully balanced both to create the most enjoyable experience without losing sight of the setting that inspired it.
Our aim has always been to celebrate the ingenuity, craftsmanship, and environmental stewardship of the period while portraying its historical context with care and respect.
We have made the decision at Paverson Games to focus on the English language version of Ringyō for this crowdfunding campaign.
This will not stop, slow down, or diminish the possibility of us localizing Ringyō in other languages. We are already talking to some of our localization partners about this project, but this will be finalized after the campaign! Follow the Kickstarter Updates or this link to stay up to date on our localization efforts.
This decision is based on our experience with the Luthier campaign, where we felt we could not fully support our foreign language backers at the same speed, equity, or efficiency as our English backers. This is because—while our localization partners are working very hard on the translations and productions— their progress is entirely out of our hands and will naturally vary across several languages. This means updates to the localization backers were communicated via us as a third party and often focused on delays rather than good news. We hope that this new approach will make it much more transparent and efficient for all parties involved.
