Ruins of Aspira: A Living Open-World Campaign for 5E
Par The Flying Goblin
Statut actuel
No Cancelled session.
No fixed party.
No railroads.
Explore a world built upon the body of a sleeping (dead?) god, uncover the ruins of fallen civilizations and stop The Cult before it awakens the world-eater once more.
Beyond a gate lies a world built upon the body of a sleeping god
A year ago, explorers crossed a dimensional gate and founded the settlement of Spirehold. Beyond its walls stretches a wilderness no one has mapped, filled with forgotten ruins, buried treasures, and the remains of civilizations long gone.
This is not the first age to rise on these lands.
For countless cycles, kingdoms have flourished and fallen. Their cities lie in ruins. Their secrets remain buried beneath stone and bone. Now a new civilization has arrived, unaware that the same fate may await it.
Something is stirring in the wild.
And something is trying to wake the god.
Why did every civilisation fall? (The Mystery)
The ruins are everywhere.
Broken fortresses cling to mountain peaks. Forgotten cities sleep beneath forests and marshes. Ancient relics lie buried beneath layers of stone, waiting to be found.
Yet every discovery tells the same story.
A civilization rises. It prospers. It spreads across the land. Then it vanishes.
Again.
And again.
And again.
The players will uncover the truth hidden behind this endless cycle and learn why no civilization has ever survived Aspira.
Spirehold: Humanity's last safe haven (the frontier)
Spirehold is the first settlement founded beyond the gate and the only safe haven for miles. Built among ancient ruins overlooking the coast, it serves as the heart of the Explorers' League's efforts to tame the frontier.
Scouts chart new paths into the wilderness. Miners search for rare minerals hidden beneath the land. Farmers struggle to grow food on the few patches of untainted soil that still remain. Adventurers stand between the settlement and the dangers that lurk beyond its walls.
Life in Spirehold is fragile.
Food is scarce. Resources are limited. Every expedition matters. The survival of the colony depends on the people willing to leave its safety behind and venture into the unknown.
The world pushes back (Journey to the west)
The frontier does not stay still.
As the settlers push deeper into Aspira, the wilderness pushes back. Blood kobold raids grow more frequent, roads become unsafe, and entire regions fall beyond the reach of Spirehold's defenders.
The players are not exploring a static world. Their actions shape the fate of settlements, factions, and trade routes, while new threats force the colony to adapt or perish.
Over time, the struggle for survival drives the people of Aspira westward. Old safe havens are abandoned, new settlements are founded, and the campaign evolves as the frontier moves deeper into the unknown.
The wilderness watches (gloom)
Aspira is not a normal world.
A strange force known as the Gloom drifts through the wilderness, twisting the land and those who wander too far from safety. Paths vanish. Familiar landmarks appear in the wrong places. Entire expeditions disappear without a trace.
The longer explorers remain beyond the safety of civilization, the greater the risk becomes. Some return shaken and changed. Others never return at all.
The Gloom is more than a hazard of the frontier.
It is a warning that something is deeply wrong with Aspira.
Built for Real West Marches Play (why west marches works here)
Aspira was designed from the ground up for West Marches campaigns.
There is no fixed party and no main storyline that depends on specific characters being present. Players form groups from whoever is available that week, choose their own objectives, and set out into the wilderness.
This approach keeps the campaign moving. Sessions rarely need to be cancelled, new players can join at any time, and multiple Dungeon Masters can run adventures in the same shared world.
Every expedition uncovers new locations, new threats, and new opportunities. The map grows through exploration, and the story emerges from the actions of the community rather than a predetermined plot.
Playtested in a live campaign (proof it works)
Aspira is not a theoretical setting built in isolation.
The world, adventures, and core systems are being tested in an active campaign with two Dungeon Masters and a pool of ten players. Every session provides feedback, uncovers edge cases, and helps refine the experience.
The campaign continues to evolve, and so does the game.

The world evolves with the players (living systems)
The people of Aspira remember what the players accomplish.
As factions gain influence, new opportunities, allies, and rewards become available. Settlements grow, trade routes expand, and the balance of power shifts across the frontier.
Major discoveries, victories, and failures can trigger world events that affect every player in the campaign. The choices made during expeditions do not disappear when a session ends. They become part of the world's history.
Created by independent artists (human-made art)
Aspira is a collaborative project brought to life by writers, Dungeon Masters, cartographers, and independent fantasy artists.
Every illustration and map is created by a real person who helps shape the world through their work. From settlements and characters to monsters and forgotten ruins, each piece contributes to the identity of Aspira.
As the project grows, we hope to work with more artists and continue building a world created by a community of passionate creators.
This is a full West Marches campaign with a brand new setting, new subclasses, a fresh form of magic, unique items, and an overarching story that bends to player choices. The first book holds fifty tested one-shot missions for levels 1 to 7, all ready to run.
