Every year, four times a year, and once on each of the unholy nights, the Fairy King commands their fellow fairies to blow their horns, announcing the call to Rumpus! Imps, goblins, elves, dwarves, and all kinds of fairy folk excitedly pack their belongings and travel to the court for the coming festivities!
The boldest among them assemble their troupe of three and prepare to entertain the Fairy King in a series of re-enactments, contests, follies, and tournament funerals! Watch as a tooth comes to life, a redcap is entranced by dance, or a particularly tall fairy gets split in half and multiplies!
Will you dare to enter the topsy-turvy court of the Fairy King to seek riches and ruin among the fairy folk? If so, then get ready to RUMPUS!!!
Rumpus is a tabletop fantasy brawler (think Super Smash Brothers meets the Labyrinth), full of tricks, traps, and jiggery-pokery. Designed for 1-4 players.
- Fully illustrated with watercolor and ink by the fairy friend and visionary artist, Brett Manning!
- Assemble your troupe of three wee weirdos from any of the twelve available fairies.
- Over 100 unique items for your fairies to find, cherish, and wield against their foes!
- 36 Oddities that can make any item into something truly spectacular!
- 36 different magics for your fairies to learn, love, and lament!
- 12 Wild Magics to ruin your life or raise you up to become the Fairy King’s champion!
- Make your own modular Rube-Goldberg-style traps!
- 11 scenarios, each a distinct game, such as Hog the Grog, Take the Babe, and for the sporty among you, try a healthy game of Hurling!
- Meet ghosts, skeletons, blobby things, hares, and so many more NPCs that we forgot to count them!
- Be the first to capture gifts from the Fairy King thrown into the arena!

We've been working on and playtesting Rumpus for over three years! Here you can take a look at some of our early prototypes and playtesting photographs.
Metal Fairy Miniatures!
We also have some beautiful fairy miniatures sculpted by Tine Fieldling based on Brett Manning's artwork! These will be available during the campaign!
Finding your Troupe
Before you play, you must find your troupe. Each troupe begins with three fairies. Fairies enter the Rumpus with two items, one magic, and one true name! Draw item cards, check if they are Odd, draw your magic, and roll up a name—shhhh, don’t tell!
Rumpus is easy to play, even for mortals!
- Choose one fairy to activate on your turn.
- This fairy may walk (up to 3 spaces), perform stitches (free actions), and spend one action: fight, use an item, use their magic, set a trap, run, or pick-a-pocket!
- Resolve the consequences of your actions, and then pass the turn to the next player!
The actions you can take on your turn:
All actions that fairies take can be classified into 6 categorical categories.
- Fight: Attack another fairy in range! Bully up if you have multiple fairies in range, add any dice or modifiers granted by the fairy’s friends and fighty items, and make an opposed roll against your opponent! Be wary of mishaps and disasters, and cross your fingers as you hope to slaughter your enemy!
- Use an Item: Each item has its time and place. Right here, right now! Hold your item for all to see as you put it to use. Read the special rules on the card to see what the item does. If it is an Odd item—oooh baby—things are about to get weird!
- Use Magic: Each fairy has a special little magic they can use. Maybe they can throw a giant log across the board, turn you into a boot, or make a super burp to clear a path. The possibilities are limitless (aka 36). Whether it is a wink, a snap of the fingers, or blowing a raspberry, they love to add a little panache when they use their magic!
- Set a Trap: Assemble a makeshift trap in a surrounding space. Add some items to it for extra trap effects. Watch out! Step on the trap and you could get the pinball treatment or have your head stuck in a hollow log! If you step into a surrounding space of the trap, you’ll have to make a trap check to see if you set it off!
- Run: Go fairy, go! Move an additional three spaces. That’s all.
- Pick-a-pocket: Get your wiggly fingers into your neighbor’s pocket and snatch a beloved item chosen randomly! Or, sneakily slip one of your items into the hands of another fairy; it’s a gift!
A stitch in nine saves time!
Stitches are special sleights of hand that take no time at all. A fairy may perform an unlimited number of the following stitches at any time during their turn:
- Pick up an item: A fairy may pick up an item or corpse to carry.
- Eat an item: A fairy may eat an item to gain 1 life, or 1 Mischief Die to add to any future roll.
- Drop an item: A fairy may drop as many items as they wish; it’s ok to make a mess!
The scenarios and festivities!
At each annual festival, the Fairy King calls for special re-enactments, challenges, and performances. These are the scenarios in which your troupe must compete! Randomly roll, or choose from 11 different scenarios. Each scenario is practically a new game!
- Escape the Labyrinth: Fairies must escape the ever-changing labyrinth or be lost forever!
- Bury the Fairy: A deeply misunderstood re-enactment of mortal funerals. Troupes race to find an empty grave and be the first to bury a fairy.
- Trapper’s Delight: Fairies compete to trap each other in their most clever contraptions!
- Sergeant Prepper’s Lovely Log’s Club: Shopping spree! Fairies race to collect the hugest hoard of items within their Hollow Logs. Search the inside of a toadstool to see what you can find, but please don’t get bit by a bug!
- Wee Wars: A good old-fashioned beat ‘em up. Last fairy standing wins. HG Wells would be proud. For dogs and country!
- Hog the Grog: The ale has been poured! Fairies steel their stomachs as they sidle up to the Stump of Everlasting Libations to see who can drink the most before dawn! Be careful—don’t barf.
- Take the Babe: Everyone loves a good baby! Break into a mortal house to take that little plaything. Make sure no one notices by leaving a cute changeling in the empty crib. First to steal away into the night with the baby wins!
- The Curse of the Cursed Road: Those ding-dang mortals are always traipsing around our woods. Throw as many curses as you can and watch as that goofy mortal runs around in terror!
- The Semi-annual Re-enactment of the Stand Against the March on Fae-rie: Once long ago, but likely never-at-all, the mortals banded together to invade our world. No festival is complete without a re-enactment of the battle that left all mortals roiling in embarrassment for generations to come. Win by killing the most mortal soldiers.
- Elfshot: Round ‘em up! It’s cow herding time. Mortals hate it when you set their cows loose. Use your slings and arrows and ugly mugs to scare the cows free from their prisons!
- Hurling: Exactly what it sounds like. It’s some good ol’ healthy sport fun! Join a team, hit a ball, form a league. Get points, score wins!
Bonus scenarios
The Warlords of Halloween (early backer reward & add-on): On this, the most beloved night of the fairies, set your funny mortals to work trick-or-treating to steal items from each other’s fairy forts. Inspired by the holiday called Halloween and the Atari game called Warlords.
The Twinkling Tombs (included in Festival Rumpus 2 Mag add-on): Fairies tiptoe through the tombs, looking for the legendary Ostentatious Skeleton, who is so fancy. Pluck the Skull Star Diamond from their bony brow and get out of there! But watch out for jewel thieves! (other fairies). Inspired by For the Love of God.

Follow the campaign by clicking "Notify me on launch" to find out more about the game, exclusive backer rewards, and more!It is I, Kyle. I am here to tell you the story of how a Rumpus came to be!
After Max and I finished the system-neutral TTRPG setting, Fairyland in 2022, I knew I wanted to make a tabletop game to spend even more time in the land of the fairies. Around the same time, I encountered the lovely and bizarre game, Turnip 28. This was my first real pull into the world of tabletop miniatures games, and I fell hard and fast. I immediately started exploring this style of gameplay as a way to practice seeing into Fairyland. The idea of creating your own little weirdos to play with felt so conducive to finding fairies. The first draft of Rumpus was actually called Fairyland 28!
I finished Fairyland 28 in May of 2023 in Sedona, Arizona, while recording the Demon Lord soundtrack with Max (we are Cthulugans). Max and I played our very first game of Fairyland 28 using objects we found outside. Here you can see us playtesting the scenario Hog the Grog, which is still in Rumpus!
As we played Rumpus, Max and I realized that Fairyland 28 actually badly wanted to shift outside of the norms of 28mm miniatures games. At this point, Max and I started the long and laborious process of designing Rumpus. It would take us three more years, various iterations, and thousands of prototype cards, chits, tokens printed, cut, and discarded!
Fun fact: Rumpus was actually called Salt & Pepper Performance for well over a year purely to spite Max. But that is another story for another time.
