Lorec, a land of breathtaking beauty and mystical creatures, is crossed by deep gorges and primeval forests that are home to dwarves, humans, halflings, azaraks and dark elves. But a dark shadow lies over this world. Once upon a time, harmony reigned and all races lived in harmony. Back then, the elves were chosen by the god Sarras to guard a powerful artefact: the Holy Book of Sarras, which bundled the magical energy of the overworld and underworld.

Lorec was created with the divine powers of the book, but it also attracted the gods of the underworld, who wanted to use it to open a portal to their world. While the elves conscientiously carried out their duty and protected Lorec from all dangers, they had no idea that a betrayal in their own ranks would bring them down.

Prince Tuphertormar, the son of the Elven King, secretly read the book and abused its power for his own purposes. After a dispute with his father, King Sefalumar, he murdered him and took over the throne. A war broke out between the followers of Tuphertormar and the elves, who remained loyal to Sefalumar. Together with the humans and the secret Order of Azarak, they fought against Tuphertormar. After many years of bitter fighting and immeasurable losses, they finally realised the bitter truth: Tuphertormar was invincible. The only hope of disempowering him lay in wresting the Book of Sarras from him. But what they did not realise was the enormous burden this decision would place on the world - a shadow darker and heavier than they could ever have imagined.

In a desperate attempt to protect the book from the hands of Tuphertormar, Kuttar, King of Men, destroyed the artifact and sacrificed himself for the deed. Tuphertormar, furious at the loss of the book, realised too late the punishment of God: the Elves lost their immortality and became Dark Elves, cursed with disease and infirmity. Tuphertormar became the Dark Emperor, and the few remaining Elves went into hiding to survive.

Since then, the Dark Emperor's power has waned and the world has fallen into decay. From the ashes of this defeat, the Order of Rune Blade is born. Together with the Order of Azarak, they do everything in their power to free the land from the Dark Emperor's iron grip, lest they be dragged into ruin together with him and the Dark Elves.
