What is SCRATCH?

SCRATCH is a solo dice golf game. You build a hole from a course card, place terrain tiles on a grid board, pick your club, roll dice, and navigate hazards to the flag. Sand, trees, water — all of it works the way it does on a real course. A hole plays in about five minutes. A full 18-hole round takes around 20 minutes.

The goal is to lower your handicap from 20 all the way down to Scratch.

Who's behind it?

I'm Kyle. I'm a golfer who can't play as much as I want to (right now). I've got kids, a house to take care of, and golf is a four-hour commitment I can't make at this time. I also play tabletop games, and one afternoon watching golf on TV I had a thought: what if I could build a dice game that actually felt like golf?

So I started designing it.

Where did it come from?

The first version had a 14 page long rule book (basically all mechanics) and used a d20 for everything. You had to build the hole from scratch with rolls, determine wind direction with rolls, determine shot shape with rolls. It worked. But it was slow getting to the actual playing part. It just wasn't fun to get to.

So I started cutting. Every roll that existed to support another roll — gone. Every phase that happened before you actually played — collapsed. The d20 became a d6, then a d8. The four-step shot became two: aim and roll.

Somewhere in that process of taking things away, the game got better. Faster. It started to feel like the thing I was watching on TV — that specific mix of strategy and luck that makes golf unlike anything else.

A free pocket version of the game exists right now and you can download and play it before the campaign even launches --> https://playscratch.golf

It fits in your back pocket and plays in about 20 minutes. The Kickstarter funds the full board game version: a printed game board, terrain tiles, card decks, and a proper box.

Why do I care?

Because nothing else scratches the itch. There are golf video games, golf trivia games, putting mats in garages. But nothing that captures what it actually feels like to stand over a shot and commit — where the strategy matters, where a bad bounce stings, where a birdie feels earned.

That's what SCRATCH is trying to be. The round you can play when you can't play a round.
