SLA Industries

The ENnie award winning SLA Industries (pronounced "Slay Industries") is a horror noir science-fiction setting. Set in a dystopian reality in which the majority of the known universe is either owned or indirectly controlled by the eponymous corporation SLA Industries.

The game incorporates themes from the cyberpunk, gothic horror and conspiracy genres, and has always been praised on the quality of writing and art. SLA Industries is considered one of the first and best examples of the Splatterpunk genre in RPGs.

Mr Slayer, the head of SLA Industries, and his right hand man Intruder.

SLA Industries was created back in the 1990s and has an unbelievable rich background. Across the 35 years of its existence 1000s of pages of content have been written across two editions. This project is a reset, allowing the Nightfall team and new and old players alike have a start point, making the near impenetrable level of detail and content flow easily.

Playing the game

The World of Progress, the universe in which SLA Industries operates, is a science-fiction image of the 1980s, where the fax machine spews out information alongside green-screen computers and vat-grown biogenetic monsters, who compete with humans and exotic alien species for work in an overgrown city that plunges deep underground.

Players in SLA Industries take on the role of an Operative, the highly-trained and well-equipped freelancers that serve as the company's agents, investigators and enforcers. Operatives perform tasks for both a pay packet and the promise of an increase in their security clearance, as both provide them access to an increased standard of living, better equipment, progression up the corporate ladder and sponsorship opportunities. Most of all though, they strive for the one thing that everyone in the media-driven World of Progress wants: Notoriety.

SLA Operatives can be all sorts of species from the common human, to the honour-bound Shaktar, to the vat-grown killing machines known as Stormers, but there are many more options too.

Characters progress along with the campaign, gaining credits, security clearance and notoriety, and can spend their hard-earned rewards on better equipment, stronger armour, more deadly weapons, powerful combat drugs or something a little bit different, like a down-payment on a Life After Death account, ensuring that even death can't stop them.

Each of the nine different species offers its own play style, each armed with unique species-specific abilities, from the studious Neophron to the drug-addled Frother, from the brutish Stormer to the quick-witted Wraithen, from the versatile Human to the honour-bound Shaktar, pick the species that suits you best and bring them to life.

Money can't buy you love...but it can buy you guns!

The Savage Worlds Ruleset

Savage Worlds is by Pinnacle Entertainment Group an action-based player-driven ruleset which uses a set of polyhedral dice to determine success/failure. A rookie might roll a d4, whereas a master rolls a d12. Along with this, Wildcards (Operatives and NPCs that matter) get a wild die d6 which they can roll alongside their normal dice and take the best value. If it beats a GM set target number they succeed.

To make Savage Worlds fit the SLA world of visceral action, we've created the Collateral die (an offshoot of the Savage Worlds shooting die rules).

  • This allows melee based Operatives to shred the foes of SLA with the same gusto as the best machinegun-toting maniacs. Instead of rerolls, we give you more rolls.
  • And it's not just for combat! Medics, Techies and Scouts can all gain the benefits of Collateral Dice by purchasing the latest - top of the line - SLA branded equipment to aid them on their missions.

...but...

Nothing is free. If you roll a 1, it's going to hurt you, there will be a Consequence. Built off the rules for Critical failures and Innocent bystanders, just as your technology can help carry the day, so too can it cause a right stuff up.

  • You, might succeed in your action only to wind up facing another foe, having your cover disintegrate or discovering a red herring at the same time as a solid lead.

And would it be SLA without Armour Damage rules?

  • Savage SLA might not force you to track every nick and scratch, but at the end of a fight, there's a chance your Armour could have become damaged.
  • If your lucky, your Techie might be able to give it a quick field repair and get you back into the action, but if it all goes wrong you could find yourself walking around in a perforated suit of armour that's as much use as wet toilet paper against the denizens of downtown.

Fight, Flight, Freeze.

  • SLA assumes if you can fight, you're not really scared. It also assumes that your SCL determines the difference about what is "a concern" and what's "pants-wettingly scary".
  • We eschew long tables of fear effects for fear effects that can cause non-lethal wounds.

The question isn't "are you scared"?... It's "how scared are you"?

What do I get?

All three books are currently 200 pages long, and will be offered as hardbacks. We are hoping to extend the page count during this campaign.

Example page spreads. Layout focusses on easy of use, whilst providing all information a player and GM needs to play.

The Gamesmaster's Guide includes everything a GM needs to run the game, including the deep background and secrets of SLA Industries, scenario ideas, the rules and stats for enemies.

The Players' Guide is the book each player should have (or at least have access to). This gives the players an appropriate level of understanding of the World of Progress (what the SLA Industries world is often called), an overview of the characters they can play and the rules to create them and arm them.

The Threats Analysis book is a 'who's who' of each enemy you could come across in the world of SLA, each spread presents an enemy, its art, overview and stats. All easy to access and indexed.

Full Conversion Rules

While these 600 pages (across the 3 books) is an exhaustive dive into the world of SLA Industries, it is fair to say that over 30 years of creation cannot be completely covered in this offering - BUT fear not, we have worked hard to ensure every bit of SLA Industries 2nd Edition can be  easily and quickly converted into SAVAGE SLA.

If you have a favourite 2nd edition alien species to play or training package the Players' Guide has rules to support it. The Gamesmaster's Guide has all the basics for converting NPCs statlines from 2nd edition, while the Threats Analysis book will dive in deep and provide conversion information for all the creature abilities in the 2nd edition Threat Analysis books.

SLA Industries threats are: Cult, Conflict, Collateral and Corporate (the 4 Cs).

The following add-ons can be added to your pledge. Select them when you pledge or use the 'manage my pledge' button.

The Team

Nightfall Games has been in existence since the early nineties, when it launched SLA Industries. Since then, it has been associated with a number of companies, including Wizards of the Coast and Cubicle 7.

Since 2019, the new Nightfall Games team have produced over 20 RPG products including games such as The Terminator RPG, The Hellboy RPG, DEMON DOG, Claudia Christian's Musketeers vs. Cthulhu, and StokerVerse Roleplaying Game and a lot of SLA Industries content.

This team is:

The originator of SLA Industries and is the art director and main artist for Nightfall Games. He is an in-demand artist in the gaming industry having worked on the likes of Magic: the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, to name but a few.

One of the original members of Nightfall Games and was responsible for a large portion of the original release in 1993. A vital part of the company, Jared continues to write, edit and layout SLA Industries publications around his life as a sysadmin and World Superbike reporter.

The Managing Director of Nightfall Games and the driving force behind our Kickstarters. For SLA Industries he is lead writer for Thresher, flora, fauna, diseases and the 9th Division. He also co-owns Word Forge Games, GMS Hobby Games Logistics, Elfling Games and is co-trustee of Serenity Nature, a 7-acre nature reserve in Warwickshire, England.

Our projects manager and rules lead. He joined us after the SLA COLLATERAL Kickstarter, but was instrumental in its completion. Benn's writing can be seen in many an RPG including Nightfall Games' SLA Industries, Musketeers vs. Cthulhu, Maggot Machine, StokerVerse, Hellboy, Terminator and Lillithea lines and many publications for other RPG companies.

Shipping

We will ship from the UK (GMS Hobby Games logistics), Australia/NZ (Why? Games), Canada and US (Last Mile Logistics). For the EU we ship from the UK DDP (Delivered Duty Paid). That means that if you're in any of these regions, there will be no import fees for you. Anywhere outside these regions may be liable to import duties depending on your country's policies.

Shipping is charged after the campaign, separate from your pledge, so we can be fair to all our backers (shipping is rarely one size fits all). We will ship your rewards at our cost to our international hubs and charge shipping from your nearest hub to you. As a rough estimate, for the 'BPN OFFICER' level pledge, we expect shipping to look something like this:

  • UK: £13
  • US: £17
  • Mainland Europe: £26
  • Cyprus/Malta/AUS/Canada: £32
  • ROW: £30-65

Unfortunately, import laws and customs in some countries have made it impossible for us to ship to them. We do not ship to: Russia, China, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan - although we can send you PDFs.

Please note:

For each country, we will not offer any of these products into retail or sell them on our website or via shows until all pledge rewards (for people that have completed the pledge manager on time) have been dispatched.

Why Kickstarter?

A really good question! Firstly Kickstarter is one of the best ways to market a new product and especially when the company does a good job in completing prior Kickstarters (like we have).

Nightfall Games is a fiercely independent company. We want to make some really amazing exclusive and luxury products for those of you that want to come along for the ride.

The money you pledge will be spent on making this game the best it can be. Check our refund policy in the FAQ section.
