Story of Pizza Party
Our journey began three years ago when we set out to create a game that could bring diverse families like our own (kids ages 6, 9, and 17) together. This led to Dizzy Lizzy, a logic game where little sisters can beat their bigger brothers.
We made & launched Dizzy Lizzy in the Netherlands, as a co-creation with our players, directly via dizzylizzygame.com. We knew nothing about publishing games yet; it was one big experiment! But it worked, and over the summer, Dizzy Lizzy became a 'living game', players joined, and together, we grew Dizzy Lizzy to almost 20 game modes published on dizzylizzy.medium.com.
That year, people started telling us to go to SPIEL, the world's largest public tabletop game fair (wow), and we were just in time to still go, so we went! There, we met Ludilo and Tucker's Fun Factory. Who ended up helping us publish Dizzy Lizzy internationally, so we could focus on making games!
Proud as we were of Dizzy Lizzy, the game was still limited to logic, and we missed a challenge for our kids' social skills. And this sparked the beginning of Pizza Party. - First explored as "Dizzy Lizzy's Pizza Party"!
Phase 1 - "Dizzy Lizzy's Pizza Party"
We made samples and tested them with anyone who wanted to try. Dice Daniel wrote a nice preview about it, and we also got to present it for the "Golden Dice" award in Belgium, where it was nominated as an educational game. Pizza Party quickly became our kids' new favourite, but for the grown-ups? not so much... Pizza Party was still too random, with too many elements of luck. So we dove back into the cards for phase two.
Phase 2 - "Snacko Gecko's Pizza Party"
For months on end, we added, tested, fine-tuned, and re-tested at our little sister Felia & Steven's table, together with Kieran & Willem. We added depth to the main game and even hashed out the other 6 game modes. Together, we made it really fun for us.
It was no longer just a "Dizzy Lizzy" game, so we gave the name to her nephew, "Snacko Gecko"! And the originally developed, more accessible game "Dizzy Lizzy's Pizza Party"? That became the game mode "Greedy Geckitos", one of the seven game modes in the box of our final version, now here on Kickstarter!
Final phase - A "living game"
Having players think along and coming up with new, fun ways to play is what made our first game, Dizzy Lizzy, so special to us. We hope you'll like our first seven game modes in the box, but we're especially excited to learn and share all your ideas in the future, as the possible ways to play are infinite!
Special thanks
Pizza Party originally started as an idea to help our kids with social play (give & take). But over time, it developed into a much more dynamic game that's also fun to play for adults. It's been a joy, and we'd like to give a special thanks to some of the many people who helped us along the way:
To Maylin (7) & Goran (10), for being our younger children who inspired this game. To Janine, Yuri, and Neo, as well as Jordi & family, and Wouter (a.k.a. @bord.en.spel) for being eagerly curious, playtesting and sharing significant early feedback. To Daniel (dicedaniel.nl) for his witty writing in (early) reviews, making us realise our identity: We like to make 'sandbox-' or 'living games'. To Emiel, for his contagious enthusiasm, sharing early on, and giving essential feedback. To Tony, for 'baking with us'; sharing his critical and sharp eye, but above all his kindness, inspiring the collaborative spirit. To Bastiaan (Nox' Spellenzolder), for his kind feedback, golden tips, and sharing a very meaningful vote of confidence. To Felia & Steven - at whose table we've 'finetuned the game modes to perfection' - for their sharp reflections after each game played (and for 'de-creepifying' the mime & inspiring bling bling!). To Kieran, for his good vibes and relentless wit when joining the table, as well as to Willem, for being so mischievous, cleverly sabotaging the games from every angle, pushing us to make the game tamper-proof. To Heidi & Margot (Speel je Vaardig) for the last-minute essential feedback on our instruction manuals. And last but not least, to Rustam, for making Pizza Party's amazing animation and lending his technical support, always being available to deal with our creative mess with great enthusiasm and a lot of love.
We could not have done this without you, thank you! – Dizzy Lizzy Family
Why Kickstarter?
Kickstarter backing goes towards funding our 1st public edition of Snacko Gecko's Pizza Party! We chose to launch Snacko Gecko on Kickstarter because:
- Firstly, launching on Kickstarter gives us creative freedom; we can launch our 1st edition exactly how we like it - in actual pizza boxes! Regular distribution and retail prefer more standardised cardgame box formats, so we'd be very surprised if this 'Pizza Boxes' version will end up in a lot of regular retail.
- Secondly, we want to share Snacko Gecko directly with you, the players! That's our way to invite you to join our party and imagine new ways to play with us, together ❤️. - Similarly, we previously launched our first game, Dizzy Lizzy, as a co-creation with our players, but we were limited to our home country, the Netherlands. This time, we're betting on Kickstarter to help us reach fun new players around the globe!
Please back our Kickstarter, and come get Down 'n Dizzy with us!
