Welcome
From the world of Arcane Seeds comes a new chapter, this time focused on something far more personal than magic systems or spellcasting — the weapon in your hand, and what it becomes over time.
Growing up, I was always drawn to stories where power wasn’t something a character simply picked up, but something that revealed itself gradually. It changed with them, reflected who they were, and carried weight because it felt earned.
You see that idea across so many of the series that inspired this project. In Bleach, a blade has a name, a presence, and something waiting to be understood. In Demon Slayer, every movement carries discipline and intent. In Hunter x Hunter, abilities are shaped by the person using them. And in Soul Eater, weapons and wielders are bound together completely.
That’s the feeling this project is built around — bringing that kind of character-driven progression into 5e in a way that actually works at the table.
Set in the distant continent of Kyōsen, this expansion introduces a system where weapons evolve alongside their wielder. Over time, they begin to respond to how you fight, what you protect, and the choices you make under pressure. What starts as a simple blade or shield can grow into something far more personal — something that feels like it belongs to your character from the beginning of the campaign all the way through to the end.
What is Soulbound Relics?
Soulbound Relics is a 5e-compatible expansion built around a simple idea: your weapon becomes part of your character’s progression, not something you replace every few levels.
Instead of cycling through magic items, you develop a single relic over time. It grows with you, responds to how you play, and gradually unlocks new abilities as your character changes. The goal is to make your weapon feel like something that matters from the start of a campaign through to its final moments, rather than something temporary.
At the centre of the system is a three-part structure that shapes every relic:
- Origin — what drives it
- Path — how it fights
- Revelation — what it becomes when fully awakened
These combine to form a complete identity. Two characters might both wield blades, but the way those blades behave, evolve, and reach their final form can be completely different depending on the choices made during play.
The Trinity Relic System
Every relic is built from three glyphs. Each one represents a different part of the relic’s identity, and together they determine how it behaves mechanically.
Origins define the conditions that cause a relic to grow stronger — whether that’s taking damage, avoiding it, protecting others, or building momentum over time. Paths determine how that power is expressed in combat, shaping whether the relic leans toward speed, defense, or direct execution. Revelation defines the final state, unlocking a powerful but limited ability tied to the character’s journey.
These combinations create a structured system with 27 core outcomes, each designed to feel distinct at the table. From there, the type of weapon you choose slightly adjusts how that power is expressed. A fast weapon might emphasise movement and repeated strikes, while a heavier weapon focuses that same power into fewer, more impactful moments. Defensive forms shift that energy outward, allowing players to protect or support others without changing the underlying identity of the relic.
The system is designed to stay readable and consistent. You’re building something unique, but you’re not learning a new ruleset every time you do it.
How Soulforging Works
Relics don’t appear fully formed. They develop through play.
Each relic progresses through three stages, tied to moments that happen naturally during a campaign.
In the Dormant stage, the item begins to show subtle changes. Small mechanical effects start to appear, usually tied to behaviour — how often you’re hit, how you position yourself, or how you interact with allies.
In the Awakened stage, the relic becomes more responsive. It introduces active decisions in combat, giving players more control over how and when to use its abilities.
The final stage, Revelation, is unlocked through a defining moment. This might come from a major fight, a turning point in the story, or a personal breakthrough for the character. Mechanically, it provides a powerful ability with clear impact, usually tied to a limited window or a meaningful cost.
These stages aren’t tied to level alone. They’re designed to align with what’s happening at the table, so progression feels connected to the story rather than detached from it.
Example Relics
Here are two relics exactly as they appear in the book, showing how different combinations create completely different playstyles.
Kage no Kōshin
Shadow that moves before the body decides.
A relic shaped by stillness and timing. It rewards players who stay untouched and commit to a single, precise moment.
Hikari no Tate
The light that refuses to let others fall.
A relic built around protection and sacrifice. It grows stronger each time its wielder steps in front of danger meant for someone else.
Weapon Forms
Each relic adapts slightly depending on how it’s used.
The core identity of the relic doesn’t change, but the way it plays at the table shifts depending on the weapon you choose. Lighter weapons emphasise speed and mobility, heavier weapons concentrate power into fewer strikes, and defensive forms allow players to redirect or absorb damage for others. Reach weapons extend control over positioning and space.
These adjustments are intentionally small. They give players flexibility in how their character feels to play without adding unnecessary complexity or rewriting the relic itself.
Subclasses
This book includes a set of subclasses designed to sit naturally alongside the relic system, each one built around a clear combat identity.
- Crimson Oath Style (Fighter) focuses on forward pressure and resilience, growing stronger as the fight intensifies
- Silent Thunder Form (Rogue) centres on timing, positioning, and precise strikes
- Pact of the Living Blade (Warlock) explores the bond between a wielder and a weapon with its own will
- Sunbreath Disciple (Monk) uses rhythm and form to control movement and flow in combat
These subclasses aren’t required to use the relic system, but they provide strong entry points for players who want to build directly into it from the start.
Sparring and Rivalry
Some of the most important fights in a story aren’t meant to end in defeat.
This expansion includes a lightweight sparring system designed for training matches, rivalries, and character-driven encounters. It allows players to engage in meaningful combat without needing to run a full encounter, while still creating mechanical impact and progression opportunities.
It works especially well for tournament arcs, mentor-student relationships, or recurring rival characters.
What Else is in the Book?
Alongside the relic system, the book includes:
- Soul Marks — visible changes tied to a character’s growth
- Tools for GMs to guide awakening moments naturally
- Factions and traditions within Kyōsen
- Narrative prompts to support character-driven progression
- A framework designed to expand with future content

Looking for Even More Anime-Inspired Character Progression?
If Soulbound Relics is inspired by awakening weapons and the evolving bonds seen in series like Bleach and Demon Slayer, then Arcane Seeds explores a different fantasy entirely: discovering a mysterious power and slowly uncovering what it is capable of becoming.
Inspired by the grand adventures, unique abilities, and sense of discovery that made me fall in love with One Piece, Arcane Seeds introduces supernatural powers known as Arcane Seeds. Each Seed evolves differently, unlocking new abilities, transformations, progression paths, and character-defining choices throughout a campaign.
Arcane Seeds: Complete Digital Edition

If you enjoy anime-inspired progression systems, evolving powers, and character-driven campaigns, Arcane Seeds and Soulbound Relics are designed to complement one another.
From the Creator
Arcane Seeds worked because people connected with the idea that character growth could be reflected in mechanics.
This project builds on that, but brings the focus closer to the player. The goal is to make the weapon you start with feel just as important at the end of a campaign as it did at the beginning.
Everything in this book is designed around that idea.
Production and Fulfilment
This project is being designed for high-quality print from the start, with layout and formatting suited for DriveThruRPG’s print-on-demand system.
Since I’ll be creating the character artwork myself, production costs are lower and more controlled. That allows for a smaller funding goal and a more focused scope, while still delivering a complete and polished product.
