The Story Behind Space Junk
Hello! My name is Craig, and if I'm being completely honest, Space Junk started as a doodle in a notebook.
No game studio. No investors. No fancy prototypes.
Just a pencil, some blank cards, and an idea that made me laugh.
I've always loved tabletop games. Whether it's gathering around a table with friends, running Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, or introducing family members to a new game, I've always believed the best games create stories you'll still be talking about long after the game is over.
One day, I found myself asking a simple question:
"What if astronauts stranded in orbit had to dodge flying space junk while desperately trying to build a rocket to escape?"
The image of a heroic astronaut being taken out by a flying spanner or a rogue space toilet made me laugh far more than it probably should have.
So I started doodling...And sketching....And sketching some more.
The version you're seeing today still exists mostly as pencil drawings on homemade cards and a rulebook written on sheets of paper spread across my kitchen table.
It's far from perfect. Some cards have been crossed out three times.
Some rules have changed completely.
Some artwork currently consists of stickmen wearing space helmets.
But that's also what makes this project special.
You're not backing a finished product. You're helping create one.
What Is Space Junk?
Space Junk is a fast-paced card game where players become stranded astronauts drifting through Low Earth Orbit.
Your goal is simple:
Collect the three rocket components needed to escape.
The problem? Everything else in orbit is trying to stop you.
Flying debris. Malfunctioning equipment. Solar flares. Space Poop. Sabotage from other astronauts.
You'll need to repair your suit, avoid disaster, sabotage fellow astronauts and desperately cling to survival as space throws everything it can at you.
The first astronaut to complete their rocket and escape wins.
Everyone else - who cares you built your rocket ship first!
Why Kickstarter?
The truth is simple. I don't have a warehouse full of games ready to ship. I don't have a publisher. I don't have a manufacturing partner waiting in the wings. I don't even have an artist ready to help me doodle these artworks to life.
Kickstarter is going to provide the foundation to get this game up and running.
We will be utilising the funding to:
- Support a local artist(s) to illustrate the cards (~40%)
- Find the right provider to build our finished design (~40%)
- Work with local businesses to scale the game to market (~20%)
What I do have is a game idea that people have genuinely enjoyed playing during early tests, and a desire to see how far it can go.
This Kickstarter will help transform hand-drawn prototypes into a real game with:
- Professional artwork
- High-quality cards
- A polished rulebook
- Proper packaging
- A finished product I'm proud to put on your table
Why Back This Project?
Because every game starts somewhere.
Today, Space Junk is a collection of ideas, sketches, crossed-out notes, and badly drawn astronauts. With your support, it becomes something real.
Whether this project funds hundreds of copies or just enough to bring the first print run to life, I'll be incredibly grateful to everyone who joins me on the journey.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my little game. Now let's try not to get hit by Space Poop.
Thank you Sincerely, Craig
