What is this game?

Spartan Speech is a fast 15-minute word game where each round, one player tries to guess a hidden proper noun while everyone else writes clues using only real dictionary words. No proper nouns, no numerals, no punctuation. The clue with the fewest words is revealed first, with ties broken by the number of letters in the first word, so players are constantly deciding how little they can say and still be understood. The guesser gets one guess after each clue. If your clue leads to the correct answer, you win the card.

It is easy to learn in minutes and plays well with family, friends, and mixed experience levels. It even works well with non-native speakers.

Where did it come from?

A coworker of mine can never remember TV show names and always blurts out impossible descriptions like “that show with the smart child” (Young Sheldon) or “that show with kids running around in the dark” (Stranger Things). I noticed I always wanted to be the first one to guess the title from his funny, yet terrible, clues.

That moment, when a clue just somehow works, is what Spartan Speech is built around.

Why the name?

The ancient Spartans were famous for speaking briefly and directly. In fact, the word laconic, meaning concise or blunt, comes from Laconia, the region of Greece where Sparta was located.

In Spartan Speech, players must give clues using as few words as possible without losing clarity. The result is a game full of clever compression, risky brevity, and funny misunderstandings.

Strategy

Every clue is a risk. Write too much and your clue might never even get revealed. Write too little and the guesser misses it entirely. And your clue might just serve as a hint for the next revealed clue.

The result is a constant push and pull between clarity and brevity. You get brilliant one-word clues, clues that feel perfect yet miss, and moments where everyone at the table starts laughing at the same time.

Who it's for

If you enjoy word games, simple rules, and the kind of moments where everyone is just a little off in the best possible way, I think you will love it.

Spartan Speech plays well with 3 to 8 players and also includes an equally fun cooperative variant for 2 to 8 players.
