The Arcanist is a modern take on the idea of a "toolbox mage", one with the answer to every possible situation. However, as that often removes stakes or tensions from many adventures, the Arcanist provides a reserved, but still powerful, translation of that fantasy. While many classes in Draw Steel derive their power from what additional things they do to a battlefield, the Arcanist brings perhaps the greatest tool of all—options.
- With their special maneuver, Flash Recall, Arcanists can change the abilities they have "prepared" with other abilities they know, even in the midst of battle, though they can't swap another ability of the same type or cost until the fight is over.
- Arcanists choose two of 10 available Magical Schools from options such as Abjuration, Graviturgy, or Illusion.
- Arcanists also have a collection of small packages known as Grimoires. Each grimoire contains an out of combat spell-like feature and one simple maneuver.
- All Arcanists walk an Arcane Path, choosing from the Orb, the Staff, the Sword, the Tome, or the Wand, shaping their wizard into a specific playstyle.
This versatility is the core strength of the Arcanist, and I'm very happy with how I have translated the wizard fantasy into the Draw Steel format.
