WELCOME TO ASCEND CORP
You start Monday.
The Corporate Ladder is a party game about surviving your own company. Four to twenty of you sit down as the staff of Ascend Corp. Every quarter the Board issues four words, the Chief Executive writes a memo using all of them, and that memo travels down the chain of command — where everybody is allowed to change it. A little. Without saying why.
Nobody is trying to be liked. Everybody is trying to finish the fiscal year with the most money.
DAY ONE — YOU ARE DEALT TWO CARDS
One of them is pinned to your chest. The other one you will lie about for an hour.
WHAT MOVES YOUR MONEY
Seventy-nine Attribute cards sit between you and a good year. Skills you can play, Perks that pay, and HR Violations that get resolved out loud, in front of everybody.
WHERE YOU SIT DECIDES WHAT YOU EARN
Promotion is not a reward. It is a trade.
HOW A QUARTER RUNS
Six steps. Four quarters to a fiscal year.
THE PART EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT AFTERWARDS
Four words go in at the top. Something else comes out at the bottom. Nobody lied, and everybody is responsible.
EVERYONE IS PLAYING FOR SOMETHING THEY WILL NOT TELL YOU
Hit your objective and you collect. Get read by a colleague and it costs you.
THREE WAYS TO PLAY, OUT OF ONE BOX
Same box. Same 107 cards. Three completely different evenings.
WHAT IS IN THE BOX
107 cards — 79 Attribute cards split into Skills, Perks and HR Violations, 20 Employee ID badges, and 8 Secret Identities.
A ten-page Standard Operating Procedure.
A 40-sheet pad of Books of Record, the score sheets. Refills are free, forever, as printable pages.
THE MEMO DEVICE
A free companion web app runs the drafting, the five-minute timer and the year-end audit from any phone or laptop passed around the table. No code, no sign-in, nothing to install.
It is open to everybody right now, backer or not, at corporateladdergame.com/device. You can read the complete rules there too. We would rather you tried it before deciding.
WHO MADE IT
The Corporate Ladder was designed by Chris Akers and playtested into shape by the Akers family: Alicia, Logan, Mia, Joe, Patrick, and Katelyn Jacobs. It is a standalone family project, not a studio.
WHAT THIS FUNDS
The game is finished. The rules are written and published in full, the artwork is complete, and print-ready files are already built to a manufacturer’s specification. This campaign funds the first production run and the shipping that follows it.
WE WISH YOU EVERY SUCCESS IN CLIMBING THE CORPORATE LADDER
Success is mandatory.
