The Crooked Street

The First Goblin Arkitect
Fill stood looking at the house across the street with a swell of pride in his small goblin chest.
Calling it a house assumed a certain amount of short-sightedness on the viewer’s behalf. It had walls, certainly, and a roof of sorts, but the agreement between the two was informal and subject to change.
Fill, unbeknownst to himself, was the first goblin architect in The Hill.
Before Fill, goblins lived in buildings but did not build them, not properly. The Hill was already ancient by goblin standards, which is to say it had been there before anyone could remember who first set it on fire. Goblins patched older structures, wedged planks into cracks, nailed ladders to walls that had not asked for ladders, and filled empty spaces with temporary add-ons and lean-tos.
Temporary was important. Temporary meant you didn’t feel bad when it collapsed.
But this was different.
Fill hadn’t patched a building. He had decided one should exist.
He hadn’t drawn plans—Fill distrusted paper, having once fallen through some—but had instead stacked things until they stopped falling over quite so fast. The front door was higher than the back door, despite both opening onto the same street. The windows did not line up with the floors inside, which made conversations through them exciting and occasionally dangerous. A balcony jutted out at an angle that suggested confidence rather than physics.
Fill admired it.
Across the street, several goblins were also looking at the house.
“Is it finished?” one asked.
Fill squinted. Somewhere above them, a plank creaked thoughtfully.
“Yes,” Fill said. Then, after a moment, added, “Probably.”
This answer satisfied no one, but it was the best answer anyone had ever given about a building in The Hill. As Fill continued to stare at his house, a dog wandered over to it and cocked its leg.
Fill sighed.
Welcome to The Hill.

Fill wandered quietly around the district, lost in thought. Shapes for other buildings rolled around his head, gently calling to him to be built. His feet eventually brought him to a standstill outside his house.
Well. Nearly.
He stood instead in the empty space beside it.
A goblin lad hunched over as he approached. Fill could tell with a single look that the lad was going to try and set fire to the house. Arson was to goblins what swimming is to fish.
Without thinking, Fill bent down, scooped up a discarded brick, and lobbed it at the lad.
Because throwing is to goblins what throwing is to fish, it missed by a significant distance. It did, however, startle a puffin, whose sudden and indignant flight startled the lad enough to reconsider setting his fire.
Fill missed the entire exchange.
He was already planning the new building in the empty space.
What if the doors actually opened this time…
