The Great Crab Race

Every year, the coastal town of Solhaven hosts the Sunfire Festival, a three-day celebration to thank the spirits for the year’s harvest, and to pray for their continued protection. This culminates in the lighting of the Radiant Tower, a magical lighthouse which protects the harbor from monsters and evil spirits alike. Unfortunately, this year, the flame won’t ignite, as a thief emerged and stole the Emberheart Crystal, a magic item necessary to ignite the flame!

The Mayor suspects the thief hid the crystal as a prize for one of the festival's games, but is afraid to cause unrest so late into the festival.

That's where you come in, adventurer!

Having saved Solhaven in the past, the Mayor has entrusted you with the task of locating the Emberheart Crystal, catching the Thief, and ultimately saving the festival from certain ruin!

The Great Crab Race is designed for a group of 3-5 3rd-level players and is meant to last anywhere from 1-3 four-hour sessions, perfect for a long summer night or two!

The Great Crab Race may be the main attraction of the story, but the adventure contains far more than just that! From frustrated vendors trying to sell their merch, festival games with lucrative prizes, to finding, capturing, and taming a giant crab to race on, there's a lot of interesting challenges for the players to tackle. Here's a few of them to get you hooked!

• Sandcastle Competition: The annual sandcastle competition, the first event of the festival and the one with the most participants! Can the adventurers beat the seven times reigning champion an elvish geomancer, and claim the top prize? Or will they crumble in defeat!
• Pie-Eating Contest: The sunfire pie-eating contest is sure to bring tears on many eyes. The spiciest pies of Solhaven, only meant for the strongest of stomachs!
• Makeshift Boat Battle: Who says you need a carpenter to make a boat? In this naval battle of makeshift rafts, the adventurers get to choose from a pile of materials to construct a raft to battle some of the scariest builders the town has to offer! Can they beat the Admiral? Or will they fall to the Pirate Gang's shenanigans?
• Axe Throwing (for Cheaters): The target just moved and you missed? Who cares! This is the axe throwing competition for cheaters! Cheat to win... If you can!

The festivities never stop! While the adventurers take part in the various contests, they must also tackle other issues that arise. Kids gone missing, thieves stealing purses, and shady merchants doing what shady merchants do best! (Selling illegal items to boost your crab!)

To make matters worse, with submissions for the Great Crab Race looming ever closer, they'll have to make some time to go get their crab, train it, and join the race!

The giant crab race is the festival's main attraction. As the final event before the yearly lighting of the Radiant Tower, it starts early in the afternoon on the festival's last day to give plenty of time for spectators to spread out and enjoy every part of it.

The race begins at the harbor's entrance, where the townsfolk throw fish and oysters at the giant crabs, distracting the untrained ones from the race, and ends at the Radiant Tower's doorstep after doing a loop around the island!

Finding a crab isn't hard. Finding the right crab for the job is another matter. With a little less than three days to prepare, the adventurers must pick between the Shallow Marsh, the Ravaged Cliffside, and the Gloomtide Basin to search for a crab, tame it, and get it to the giant crab pen, where they'll teach it all the necessary tricks to win the race!

With the help of Scuttle Sam, an expert in the field, old racer, and a good friend of the mayor getting involved, winning the race no longer looks impossible!
