The Ritual is an imagined Victorian parlor game asking how far you’ll go to satisfy your darkest desire. The game begins with a darkened room, everyone’s desires committed to paper, and a chant to a hidden power. Each round, draft cards of different suits, each of which scores in a different way. The lowest scorer becomes the Sacrifice. They will try to save themselves. If someone collects three Summon cards, they win, at the expense of the Sacrifice’s soul. Remember, it’s all just a game.

Game Play

When playing with less than 6 players, each Supplicant chooses a suit to include. Deal 6 cards to each Supplicant. Draft all 6 cards. The Supplicant with the lowest score in round one becomes the Sacrifice. The Sacrifice adds 3 Summon cards to the deck and deals 6 cards to each other Supplicant. They may look at the remaining cards. Then as the drafting round proceeds they may stalk around the table looking at what others are collecting. They chose one Supplicant they think will have the lowest score and stand behind them. If they are correct, they take that Supplicant’s spot, making a new player into the Sacrifice. Points are not kept between rounds The Sacrifice then adds one Summon card to the deck and play proceeds. If a Supplicant ever collects three Summon cards, they win! Though still tally scores, because the who the Sacrifice is may change at the last moment.

[A fake quote from the historian who "recovered" the game.]

The Card Suits

Hands – each is worth the number of points on the card.

Dyads – a pair is worth 7 points.

Third Eyes – a set of three is worth 13 points.

Pentagrams – a set is worth the square of the number of cards in the set (1 = 1, 2 = 4, 3 = 9, 4 = 16...)

Candles – a set is worth 6 points if it is larger than the adjacent player’s set.

Alters – each card worth the number of other suits in hand.

Summon – worth nothing, but drafting 3 completes the ritual.

Is this for real?

No. This is not a real Victorian era game. The only known copy did not survive a tragic church fire. This is not a reprint of that single surviving deck. There are no powers under the earth or in the howling void waiting to devour us all.
