The Ruin RPG takes you and your survivors into a world destroyed, a place where survival is a struggle, where every decision you make could be their last, where every encounter could end in death, and around every corner could be danger, horror, or salvation. The game is a journey across a blasted land, seeking safety, revenge, loved ones, or just enough food to last another day.
The Ruin 2nd edition is fully updated from the original Gold Bestseller, adding new elements like travelling rules for crossing the wasteland, a classless survivor creation system where who you were and what you did before the fall matters. A new crafting system, and new and more organic combat encounters. This new edition is about survival and will test your decision making and knowledge to keep your survivor alive.
What's Changed?
Those of you that bought the original The Ruin RPG will probably be wondering what has changed so here is a breakdown:
- New Artwork
- Simpler D100 Mechanic
- A SWADE Version
- Grittier Setting
- New Layout
- New Survivor Creation Rules
So quite a lot really.
Core Mechanic
The Ruin RPG comes in two different Core Mechanics Options:
- The D100 Mechanic - This is a percentile system where you must equal or roll under the survivors skill percentage to succeed. Your survivors chance of success can be effected by modifiers, items, and even the threats you face. This mechanic is a improved and updated version of The Ruin 1st edition mechanic.
- Savage Worlds Edition - This will use the SWADE Core Rules and you will need the SWADE Core Book to play.
Whichever core mechanic you choose The Ruin 2nd edition will be a challenging and exciting RPG set in a world gone bad.
What Makes This Game Different?
The Ruin is a journey across a land transformed. Where you will encounter locations, people, and threats which will hinder, or delay your journey forward. The core rules are about realism, where a rusty nail could kill you, and eating, sleeping, and drinking are important. The setting edges towards survival horror more than the original, the night is more dangerous than the day, and the environment can hinder progress.
The Ruin Core Book is not a game about zombies, monsters, or mutants, the only threats are animals, the environment or other humans. In the two settings books we do explore Zombies, Mutants etc, but still with that level of realism. The Ruin offers you many ways to see the apocalypse rather than just offer you one option.
- Encounter tables will allow you to generate both bad and good encounters on the fly.
- Location tables will allow you to generate ruins, forests, settlements, camps etc
- Event tables will keep the PCs on their toes as they enter a new location.
- Discovery tables for items, information, and even clues to new adventures
- Threat tables will keep what you encounter unique
The tables will change depending on which setting you are using to make the experience unique for the players.
The Core book goes into detail on the type of apocalypse and the world after, whether that be environmental, nuclear, biological, or extraterrestial, with rules for acid rain, dust storms, aftershocks, disease and mutations, solar storms and so forth.

Stretch Goals
As we progress through the campaign we many unlock some stretch goals, these are covered below.
Inspiration
I have read a lot of books, watched a lot of films and played a lot of games based upon the Post Apocalyptic genre, books like Swan Song, Outpost, Station 11, The Postman, The World Without Us, movies such as Book of Eli, The Road, Mad Max and others, and most of the more popular computer games Fallout, Stalker, and Metro 2033. To name just a few (I will be adding an 'Appendix N' into the core book). For almost 40 years I have loved the genre and I hope this newest edition of The Ruin RPG shows that.
