The Story
I've used the Tarot for many years, but I often wondered what it would be like to talk to my Tarot. What if I could sit down with the King of Wands, lie next to the man stabbed by the 10 of Swords, or stare into the distance with the Fool? What would they say?
Eventually, I began to wonder: What would happen if the Tarot asked us questions? What would it be curious about? What direction would it point me to? And what mysteries would it uncover inside of me?
That curiosity is what led me to create Toku Tarot, a deck built around curiosity and the power of questions. I called this deck Toku Tarot because Toku in Japanese means authenticity or sincerity, and that's what I wanted this deck to evoke. It's also the 2nd half of my Zen name Gentoku, so the name honors part of the lineage that created it.
As I studied the Tarot's characters, symbols, and archetypes while making this deck, I hoped the cards would speak to me, and when they did, I felt blessed, if not a little confronted. The questions in this deck are the ones I heard as I made this deck, and I hope they resonate with you as well.
Over the past five years, I carefully designed 78 wild and whimsical cards. Each one took between 10 and 30 hours and demanded my full focus and attention. Then, as I finished each card, I spent time drawing out the question of that archetype and character. Once I had it, I spent time exploring it through writing and putting down what I noticed in the guidebook I created for this deck.
Along the way, I discovered a depth to the Tarot I didn't know existed, and I had conversations with myself that surprised me. I hope this deck surprises you too, and you discover the depth that's been calling you.
The Deck
I decided to go through the deck in the opposite of its traditional order, because so much of my deck is about turning Tarot around to look at it in a new way.
One interesting feature of my deck is that it combines the story themes of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, but also includes the number of Ensos, Swords, Cups, or Wands, just like a Pip deck.
Ensos - Pentacles/Coins
In my deck, I changed the Traditional Pentacles or Coins to Ensos. Ensos are Zen circles that symbolize the fullness of the present moment. To me, this suit was never really about money or magic; it's about the material world. The world we actually live in, not the one inside our heads. The questions ask what you're working on, how present you are, and whether you're choosing this human life. Look closely, and you'll find the right number of Ensos hidden in every card, some in plain sight, some tucked into a painting on the wall. The imagery is animals, lions, nature, creative work, and some honest fear and despair.
Swords
Swords is probably the suit that most deeply connects to my experience as a coach and lifelong personal development junkie. It's about discernment and clarity, and about clearing up confusion left over from the past. The questions explore boundaries, decision-making, innocence, vulnerability, and overwhelm.
A sword can cut through delusion, and it can also wound us deeply, sometimes in ways we can't see. So the imagery moves from sharpness and leaps of faith to worry, sleepless nights, heartbreak, and the parts of us that get trapped or divided, sometimes to protect ourselves and sometimes to hide.
Cups
Cups is where the deck explores emotion, things like leaving home, owning what you want instead of suppressing it, noticing what love is asking you to do, and the feelings that come up around community.
The questions point to where your energy needs to flow, and they invite you to notice what's already moving inside you. The imagery evokes beings with quiet, sometimes mysterious power, alongside simple pleasures, loss, childhood, and hard decisions.
Wands
Wands are about action, and about how we actually make magic in our lives. The questions ask where you need to bring more energy or aliveness to a commitment, and where you're forcing magic by rushing. The card and questions also explore the power of integrity and learning to trust others, because magic isn't something we do alone. The imagery evokes Bodhisattvas, effort, celebration, and triumph, with a touch of simple joy mixed in.
Major Arcana
You'll notice the art in the Major Arcana is simpler and more childlike than the rest of the deck, and that was on purpose. This is the hero's journey, the place where the Tarot begins, and there's something very young about it. So the questions here are the most fundamental ones in the deck, and the imagery is full of playful, mysterious, slightly alien characters. I wanted you to get to explore the Tarot again for the first time, with a little wonder.
The Questions
Building a deck of 78 questions was no easy task, and I wrote about 2 or 3 versions of each question before settling on the final one. One challenge of showing the question online (esp. with people viewing the campaign on their phones) is that I intentionally pushed the questions to the very center of the deck. That way, when you do a normal fan of the cards, you only see the top question.
But it makes the text hard to read on a small screen, even though the questions are easy to read on the cards. It's one of the things I was committed to balancing: the questions on the back of the cards and the need to pull a card without knowing what you'll get.
Here is a small sample of some of the questions in the deck...
How To Use The Deck
Because there's a question on the back of every card, you can use this deck in a lot of ways.
You can use it like a normal tarot deck, or alongside a traditional deck to draw a question to clarify a reading. You just shuffle, fan the cards, and pull one or more as you feel called. You can lay the card face up and reflect on the image or traditional meaning. Or start by reading the question. You can also open the guidebook if you want to dig deeper or need more guidance.
How To Videos
You can also spread the cards face up, notice which one calls to you, and turn it over to find the question it's pointing you toward.
You can use the cards to give someone else a reading or to open a deeper, more honest conversation with them.
Each image and each question holds both wonder and challenge. At its core, this deck is a collection of images and inquiries to help you discover the energy that's calling you, or begging you to wake up.

Self Guided Session: I Asked Tarot Which Apartment to Choose (A 4-Card Decision Spread)
I am committed to creating a deck that is as beautiful to hold as it is to use. Every copy of the "Toku Tarot" will be crafted with the highest quality materials. 78 Cards: Standard tarot size (2.75" x 4.75" or 70mm x 120mm). Premium Card Stock: Printed on luxurious and durable 350 GSM art paper, matte varnish. I'm also including Holographic gilded edges on the Core, Deluxe, and Collector's Editions of the deck
The Box
I also believe a deck's container can be just as important as the deck itself. Especially since my altar is full of decks, I wanted to make sure this box would be something you'd be happy to put out. All decks will come in a sturdy, well-made magnetic box, with design features inside and out to give you a feeling of adventure and possibility every time you open the deck.
Guidebook
For me, a guidebook is essential to an amazing Tarot experience, and even though I created Toku Tarot to be fully functional without a guidebook, I didn't skimp on the writing.
One constraint when I wrote the guidebook was limiting the text to one small square, which forced me to edit and simplify the guidance so it said exactly what it needed to and no more. That's why I feel confident the inscriptions for each card will help you deepen and clarify any card, so that you can get the most from every reading.
Every deck will come with a well-produced guidebook, and anyone who pledged at the deluxe level or above will get a full-color guidebook with pictures of each card on the opposite side.

Have you ever wanted to unlock the artist in yourself? Create something special for your family, a dear friend, or your clients? Or collaborate with an artist you like?
This Tier is all about tapping into your transmission or worldview and channeling it into the cards. Together, we'll create a card inspired by you. We’ll talk about the design or feel you want to have for the card, and I’ll keep you in the loop as I create it. You can be the star of the card; you can make someone else the star; we can theme the card around a beloved figure or thinker you admire; or we can create the card around a cause or mission that means something to you.
We will also collaborate on the question and inscription for the card so it matches the theme and meaning that matters to you. While the final artwork and writing will be mine, we will work together to create a one-of-a-kind card you can cherish.
Along with your reward, you will get a holographic foil version of the deck that includes your card, and I’ll include your card in that deck and any other deck you order through the campaign.
Then, in the future, if you decide you’d like to purchase more decks, we can have a conversation about what a bulk order looks like so you can buy decks with your special card to give away to your clients, friends, family, students, or people you want to share your own special transmission with.
PLUS YOU GET EVERYTHING IN THE COLLECTOR'S EDITION
- One Creative Concept Meeting — We will have one meeting to discuss the card concept, theme, and desired visual style. We will also discuss the name of the card and the question on the back.
- One Digital Proof — I’ll share one digital proof once the card is drafted. This will be a chance for you to give me feedback.
- Two Rounds of Minor Wording or Design Adjustments — Once you see the draft of the card, I’ll take your feedback into account and work to refine the card. If you have requests for changes in design or word choice, you’ll have two chances to make suggestions or request design adjustments.
- Final Creative Direction Retained By Toku — Although it’s your card and I’ll do my best to make you happy, because it’s part of this deck and this ecosystem I retain creative control over the final card. This isn’t like I’m your on-demand graphic card designer, but more like you are commissioning a work of art from an artist. I have to stand by the final product, and it needs to fit into the deck. Having said that, I LOVE collaborating with people on art projects, and I’d be delighted to get to be creative with you.

About The Artist
Hi 👋 I'm Toku. I'm a coach, a writer, and until recently I would have told you I'm not an artist.
I came to the tarot late and pretty skeptical. I'd studied philosophy in college, spent my twenties in the music business, and at 27 I went to live in a Zen monastery for two and a half years, which is where the Japanese name comes from. Somewhere in there, a girlfriend of mine had a stack of decks, and at first I thought it was just some woo-woo, witchy stuff I wasn't into. But then I started playing with the decks and realized they were some of the most powerful tools I'd ever found for paying attention to yourself, your inner world, what the universe has been telling you, and what you already know but haven't wanted to look at.
When I get a reading, nine times out of ten the response is, " Oh, I knew that." I find the cards usually don't reveal much we don't already know. They just say it in a way we need to hear and/or can't ignore. It's similar to what I do as a coach, and it's why I wanted a deck that would invite you to look for yourself at the wisdom you've been keeping from yourself. I created the deck with a question on every card, so you can pull a card whenever you need. No question, no experience, no certainty, and still get a question that evokes the wisdom inside of you.
I created the first two cards in a business class I took in 2020 called AltMBA by Seth Godin. I never planned to make a whole deck, but it wouldn't leave me alone, and five years later, here we are. The art has a kind of simplicity to it, maybe even something a little young, and I've come to feel that was part of the point for me. A very young part of me made these, and the serious guy who sat in a monastery wrote the questions. I hope the deck has both, some youthful clarity, and well-worn wisdom.
Two things changed from the traditional structure. The Pentacles became Ensos, the Zen circle that stands for the fullness of the present moment. And the Pages became Bodhisattvas, beings who could leave this world behind and choose to come back instead, again and again, to help.
I live in Mexico City now. My hope for this deck is simple. I want it to remind you how much you already know. There's an old Zen line about the finger pointing at the moon. The deck is the finger. The truth inside you is the moon.
Creative Process
HOW THE CARDS WERE MADE
This project started during the pandemic as just two cards, and it grew from there. When I started, my interest in the Tarot was growing, but I still felt like a novice, so for each card I referenced two or three books, including 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack, Holistic Tarot by Benebell Wen, and Tarot Reversals by Mary K. Greer. I also studied how other decks presented each image, including The Fountain Tarot by Jonathan Saiz, Jason Gruhl and Andi Todaro; The Wildwood Tarot by Mark Ryan, John Matthews and Will Worthington; The Wild Unknown Tarot by Kim Krans; and The Numinous Tarot by Cedar McCloud.
Then I'd go through dozens of free images on Canva and pick a few possible 'main characters' for the card. I limited myself to free graphics and a free version of Canva because I wanted to force myself to make hard choices instead of relying on infinite options. On a few occasions, I bought an image because the free ones just weren't good enough.
Once I had a character, I'd build a scene around it, often cutting, splicing, or drawing directly on images to get the look just right. Some cards were fairly simple, with 10 or 20 images. Others took 50 or 60 images before the card felt complete. Sometimes I finished a whole card, decided the composition wasn't right for the archetype, and went back and designed it from scratch.
When the image was final, I'd name the card, write its question, and write the deeper meaning for the guidebook. Then I'd go back and refine all three through many rounds. That's why most cards took 10 to 30 hours of focused work.
At the very end, I went back through all 78 questions together to make sure they covered a wide range of topics and didn't overlap too much. Then I printed three versions of the deck for review, by me and by others, to make sure the questions worked for people besides me and that every card looked good in print. That led to more redesigns and refinements.
Time Lapses of Card Creation
Below are some time lapses I made while working on a couple of cards. As you can see, some cards came together easily, while others required lots of small tweaks to build the images I wanted.
Stretch Goals
Stretch Goals
You may notice this campaign doesn’t have the usual stretch goals that add extra items or upgrades.
That’s on purpose.
This deck was designed from the beginning to be as beautiful, durable, and thoughtfully made as possible. Rather than promising upgrades later, I chose to build the highest-quality version first - the one I want to exist in the world.
Your support isn’t unlocking a better product.
It’s helping bring the right product to life.
Instead of stretch goals, we’ll celebrate milestones together as a community. These gifts are about connection, not consumption.
Digital Game Guide
125 Backers unlocks a digital game guide with at least 8 new ways to use the Tarot. These games allow you to use this deck (and in some cases other Tarot decks) to create more connection, learn more about yourself and others, and share your love of the Tarot.
Bonus Question Guide
200 Backers unlocks a digital guide with alternative questions for every card. This alternate includes questions I considered for every card as well as other questions I found especially helpful in readings.
Backer Voted Card
When we reach 300 Backers, I'll put out a poll, and you'll get a chance to vote on a theme and a question for a Kickstarter Exclusive Card. I'll then design that card and include it in every deck beyond the Basic Edition
