For the past three years, we've been sharing our board game design journey through The Misplay. And Under One Sky is more than just a game—it's the story of how we got here.
If you've followed along, you know the path wasn't linear. How did we go from designing one-page games to creating a tile-placement game with hidden information? Wasn't this project an animal-themed political game at one point? Game design is messy, unpredictable, and full of unexpected turns.
Our story has woven through PlayingCards.io, KublaCon, Gen Con's First Exposure Playtest Hall, Golden Gate Gamemakers, GDC, countless playtest nights, and many Bay Area cafés. Every stop, every conversation, and every playtest helped shape the game it would eventually become.
This photo is from one of our earliest playtests at Dogpatch Games in San Francisco on June 26, 2025. One of my favorite things to do is look back at these early playtest photos and see how far the game has come—from a simple abstract game to a much richer, more strategic experience. It's a good reminder that great games aren't created overnight; they grow one playtest at a time.
From the beginning, we've said we're not here to tell you how to make board games. We're here to show you how we made ours.
