Each day in the wastes is scarcely different from the last ― a dismal and dull struggle to see the next sunrise. It feels like there is no living here... merely survival.

Your life has been sheltered and most of your tribe tell you to be thankful for it. Asking the Elders what trials they had to face before they settled down in the village leads only to troubled, far-away stares and the silent implication that you should not be posing those sorts of questions.

The only person who has been marginally honest with you has been your caregiver, Mara. Your parents were lost to the cruelties of the wastes in your infancy, and she was the one who took you into her guardianship to make sure you didn’t starve.

She’s old now, her face lined with deep wrinkles that betray her experience. She has been the only one to give you any sort of truth about what lies beyond the village walls. In a quiet voice, she tells you stories of what awaits you outside the safety of your home, the clutch of rickety huts built inside the ruins of an old-world building ― cannibals who would suck the marrow from your bones the moment they could get their hands on you; mutants without eyes or ears driven only by the smell of fresh blood; terrible monsters that might have once been animals but are now just things to be feared.

Upon reaching adulthood, you are given a choice about your future role in the clan...

If you want to be one of the scouts who head out into the wastes to bring supplies back to the village, turn to 30

If you prefer to stay at home, helping to guard the village from danger, then go to 11

ANOTHER EXCERPT...

You descend the old stairway in the corner of the building, wishing you had been given some sort of torch to light the way. You’re lucky there are cracks from the floor above, filtering in what little natural light remains. The place appears to be pretty sturdy and seems to be storage for what mostly looks like office supplies, broken and crumbling furniture, and huge boxes of paper you can’t imagine having enough knowledge to fill.

A scraping sound makes you jump. You whirl around to check. Nothing. Just as your heartbeat starts to slow from the sudden panic, you sense a presence in front of you!

The figure dashing its way across the room was probably once human... once! Now, the radioactive ravages of a life living in the wastes have twisted it into a mockery of a man ― warped, sallow skin, sunken grey eyes which threaten to fall from its skull, and long, twisted fingernails.

You barely have time to make sense of this creature before it is upon you...

In addition to great storytelling, one thing that you can always expect when opening a Savage Realms gamebook is kick-ass art! For Wasteland, we've tapped artist, Gary Trow.

H.L. Truslove is a writer based in Southampton, England. They got their BA and MA at the University of Winchester, where their love for fiction writing really took off. You can find them at open mic poetry nights across the city or playing Dungeons and Dragons with their friends!

The paperback of this book will be 6" x 9" and will be approximately 275- 300 pages in total length, depending on the final number of illustrations.
