Witches’ Path — Curiosities and Other Strange Happenings
A cozy mystery RPG expansion packed with a complete mystery, GM advice, ready-made characters, and tarot-powered solo play.
Solve a fully written mystery, build your own cozy investigations, or let the tarot cards reveal the story as you play in a collaborative or solo game.
A cozy mystery is waiting to be uncovered.
Not every strange occurrence needs to end in a battle. Sometimes the most interesting questions are the hidden ones:
Who left the mysterious package on the doorstep? Why has the neighbour’s cat started visiting the old greenhouse? What is going on at the little shop that only seems to open after sunset?
Witches’ Path: Curiosities and Other Strange Happenings expands the Witches’ Path tabletop roleplaying game with a focus on mysteries, curious discoveries, memorable characters, and cozy adventures.
Whether you want to run a ready-made investigation, learn to design mysteries of your own, or let the cards guide a story that unfolds as you play, this expansion gives you several ways to explore the strange and wonderful.
What's inside?
1. A complete mystery to play
Jump straight into a fully written mystery designed for the Witches’ Path system.
The adventure gives your group a ready-made starting point: a strange situation to investigate, clues to uncover, characters to meet, and questions to answer.
Use it as written, adapt it to your own campaign, or treat it as an example of how a mystery can be structured for play.
You can start with a mystery already prepared rather than having to create one from scratch.
2. How to create and run a mystery as a GM
Want to write your own mystery? This expansion includes practical guidance for building and running one.
Explore how to develop a central question, construct a chain of discoveries, create useful clues, and guide players through an investigation without making the experience feel like a test with only one correct answer.
The aim is to help GMs prepare mysteries that invite curiosity, reward attention, and leave room for the players to surprise you. As well as how to account for magic users who can learn secrets and find hidden items much more easily than is possible in real life.
3. How to build characters and play in a mystery game
Mystery adventures ask characters to notice details, ask questions, connect information, and interact with the people around them. This section offers guidance on creating characters for mystery-focused games and playing them in ways that make investigations interesting. It also gives inspiration for players and GMs for character abilities, skills, and spells that can be especially useful in a mystery.
4. Useful skills and spells
Not sure what kinds of abilities are useful in an investigation?
The expansion includes examples of skills and spells suited to mystery games, providing inspiration for characters and practical reference material for the GM. Use these examples as written or adapt them to fit the kind of mysteries your group wants to explore.
5. Five pre-built mystery characters
This expansion includes five ready-made characters designed for mystery games. They give players a convenient way to get started and provide GMs with examples of characters suited to investigation-focused adventures.
Use them as presented or customize them to make them your own.
6. Tarot-powered mystery generators
Tarot cards can do more than act as the dice to resolve actions, they can also help you create the story itself.
The expansion includes mystery plot generators, tarot spreads, and tables that use tarot cards to prompt ideas and shape investigations. Draw cards to generate possibilities, explore unexpected connections, and give yourself a starting point when you want a new mystery but don't yet know what it should be about.
These tools can be used to create inspiration for a traditional GM-led game or to help guide a story that develops as you play.
7. GM-less collaborative and solo play
You don't need a GM to explore a mystery in this system.
The expansion includes a GM-less mode for collaborative or solo play, using tarot cards to reveal answers and help determine what happens next. Rather than preparing every detail in advance, players discover the truth as they investigate and build the story from what the cards reveal.
Play by yourself and see where the investigation leads, or gather a group and uncover a mystery together. The cards help answer questions, reveal information, and introduce discoveries. You interpret those answers, connect the clues, and write the story as it unfolds.
You don't have to know the answers before you begin investigating.
8. Curious locations and memorable NPCs
A mystery is only as interesting as the places you explore and the people you encounter.
The expansion includes descriptions of intriguing locations and interesting non-player characters that GMs can bring into their games. Use them as ready-made material or as inspiration for your own setting and cast.
Every detail is designed to help you populate a world with places worth visiting and people worth talking to—especially when you need an idea during preparation or play.
9. Keeping the mystery cozy
A mystery doesn't have to be grim to be compelling.
This expansion also includes tips for keeping mystery games cozy, from the atmosphere you establish to the kinds of situations and discoveries you emphasize.
Create room for curiosity, friendship, eccentric characters, comforting routines, and the satisfaction of making sense of something strange. Let the investigation be engaging without losing the warmth that makes a cozy game feel like a place players want to return to.
Choose your way to play
