Yokozuna is the definitive Sumo Tabletop Game!

The names of all backers will be printed on the final page of the book, a permanent record of everyone who helped make this project happen.

Yokozuna was designed by Axel, founder of Metamorph Games, and illustrated by Italian artist Eros Ruscino. Axel refined the card system through dozens of prototypes and researched the sumo techniques behind each move. They then worked together to create a bold visual style inspired by Showa-era movie posters, balancing tradition with a respectful, contemporary view of sumo.

"Janken" is the Japanese name for "rock-paper-scissors", a game rooted in Japanese everyday life. For our interpretation we traveled back to ancient China, where the game originated as "frog-snake-snail".

Yokozuna uses Japanese words for some of its aspects, so the rulebook will feature explanations and curiosities about why certain words were chosen.

Dohyō [土俵]: Sumo ring;Rikishi [力士]: Sumo wrestler;Shogi [将棋]: Japanese board game from the 6th century,sometimes referred as "Japanese Chess".

The Art of Yokozuna will be printed in 210x210mm premium 350gsm paper and binded in an hardcover, it will be something remarkable for the library of any design and board games enthusiast.

Some of the content will include:

-Yokozuna’s iconography and visual language, exploring how the game’s distinctive visual identity was developed;
-Both box-art breakthroughs, featuring full-page prints of the final artwork;
-A deep dive into the illustrations and graphic design, revealing the creative process behind the game’s visual world;
-Promotional artwork, presented alongside full-page prints;
-Exclusive unpublished artwork, sketches, and early concepts, offering a look at ideas that never made it into the final game;
-Real-world sumo insights and stories, providing context and inspiration that accompany and expand upon the artwork.

The digital version of the artbook will be released as soon as it's completed, a week or two after delivering the definitive files of the game to the factory [so that the definitive version of each artwork is present].Also every hardcover backer will also receive a digital copy.

There is a mistake in the Pledge section showing the Gyoji instead of the Rikishi Clash marker, so if you want the Gyoji miniature you have to add it "again". We'll consider double miniature orders as a desire to have both miniatures.Sorry for the inconvenience!

We wanted the box to be compact and easy to carry, while still capable of holding the entire game, including add-ons, sleeved cards and expansions.

The Yoisho Expansion deck breaks the simple formula of the base game by introducing a whole new mechanic, thematically expanding both on what happens on a Dohyō and a Rikishi life and culture!

The Gyoji steps in the dohyo! The Gyoji escaped his card and is now available as a ready to print STL file! A decorative miniature designed to further immerse you on the dohyo! — Don’t own a 3D printer? Fear not! The Gyoji will be available as an add-on, both clean and painted!

The box design is inspired by traditional Japanese Kiribako boxes, featuring the characteristic fabric strand closure that ties into a simple ribbon, with a plaque under the lid as a certificate of authenticity, numbered 1 to 30 with our signatures and thanks!

While staying true to the spirit and aesthetics of this traditional design, we’ve developed our own approach with a focus on premium craftsmanship, durability, and presentation. The result is a box that feels beautiful enough to keep on display at home, while being sturdy enough to withstand a beating during transportation to your next gaming night.

Each pledge will also include a set of premium-style painted miniatures, along with a full Hatsu Basho Edition, excluded from the 500 copies limit.

The Hatsu Basho Edition gives you the option to transfer the game’s contents into the Ceremonial Box, while also providing a more practical way to carry the game around when bringing the big wooden box to enjoy isn't a priority.

* The one in the pictures is a prototype, the definitive version will feature a vacuum molded "silk-finish" plastic tray, allowing for a significantly lighter result, allowing for safer and cheaper shipment worldwide;** We have yet to receive the wooden board prototypes, they will feature the same print of the cardboard board but with the distinct feeling of a wood product.

Every pledge will include all the rewards available for that pledge, regardless of when you backed the campaign!

(The Yoisho expansion rewards will be included only for backers who purchased the expansion in any form: standalone, bundled, or as part of a limited edition).

Keep in mind that the prototype shown in pictures is outdated of several months and meant only to showcase gameplay and physical manufacturing.

Shipping fees will be calculated and collected through the Pledge Manager, available once the campaign is concluded.

Remember that the higher price is for the worst case scenario
