Publisher Pledge

Why make a Publisher Pledge for Crowdfunding?

Doomsday Robots wouldn’t exist without crowdfunding.  Crowdfunding allows small creators like us to be able to make our games without significant upfront cost and provide us a direct market to sell them to.

However crowdfunding only works because of two currencies, crowdfunding trust and backer risk.  It is the creator’s job to sustain trust in crowdfunding.  Backers then absorb risk on the publisher's behalf.

This willingness to absorb risk is what separates a backer from a traditional customer.

However, in recent years, creators have engaged in behaviors that both don’t value backer risk and erode trust in crowdfunding including,

* Cancellation of funded projects
* Misrepresenting shipping fees
* Huge delays without regular communication
* Lack of transparency
* Treating backers’ concerns contemptuously
* Misallocating backer funds for other projects
* Delivering games to non-backers before backers
* Products not meeting the expectations set by the publisher

Even though not every creator does these things, we still have to drink from the same well others have poisoned.  If backers lose trust in crowdfunding, they won’t be as willing to absorb risk, and without backer risk, crowdfunding becomes just another pre-order platform for customers.

We want to earn your trust and value your risk, so we asked backers what they wanted most from creators. From that research we created the following pledge.

Doomsday Robots Publisher Pledge to Backers

Until we begin fulfillment (shipping) of the game,
#1 We will not provide the game to non-backers.
#2 We will only use your funds for the needs of the project.
#3 We will send monthly updates and account for how we use your money.

--------
Actions speak louder than words, but we ask for the opportunity to prove ourselves to you.  We hope in doing so that we can be a good example to others and empower backers to hold creators accountable to higher standards.  Together we can work to sustain the trust necessary for crowdfunding to thrive.

If you have any questions about our pledge, please don’t hesitate to ask us in the comments.  There is a good chance someone else has that same question.  We will answer each question with full transparency.
